Bitter Rivalries

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I started this on the back of Counties that seem to be allies/get on well. From my own experience the Louth and Meath rivalry is a bitter one that goes back to the 40s and 50s. Between 1947 and 1954 the Leinster championship when to either side of the Boyne. From the outside other bitter rivalries seems to be Derry/Tyrone, Mayo/Roscommon and Kildare/Laois.

Limerick Clare. Hate em even though I love their style they are bad winners. All this "up the banner" nonsense when barely anyone really understands where the sentiment came from. I could just as easilty shout "up the shickin role" and sure twoud be the same thing.

Even though in my opinion I don't think it is a bitter rivalry but Cork and Tipperary matches are always entertanning and the quality of Hurling in these matches are unbelivable there doesnt seem to be any bitterness between the 2 sets of fans in my opinion but the Tipperary and Cork fans might say something different!!!

Suppose it depends what part of Meath you're from, I'm a 5 minute drive from the Dublin border and 10mins from the Kildare border so they're probably the 2 biggest for me, but Dublin in particular is the big one, love beating the Dubs! Louth is another big one, especially after 2010 and 2012 in the League.

Also there's a lot of little rivalries in Leinster football. You wouldn't think it until they're drawn together in the Champo.

Derry and Tyrone haven't played a championship game since 2009 so that has died down a bit, I preferred beating Armagh back in the day, their fans were certainly a rowdy bunch

Maroonforever Tipp and Cork is a super day out, most of the Cork supporters are great craic to be around on match day, well able to give and take the slagging and have yet to see anything nasty between both sets of supporters.

I think from what Ive heard over the years is that the biggest hatred/rivalry is between Tipperary and Kilkenny. Like from Tipp lads or Kilkenny lads I've talked to over the years they absolutely hate each other with a passion.

therealtmo, agree with you wholeheartedly re Cork and Tipp, always a great atmosphere between the fans. There is simply no better atmosphere anywhere in either code or in any competition or any venue than a Munster hurling final Cork v Tipp in Thurles with the history, tradition, colour and respect and friendly banter between the fans and you'd always see former Cork and Tipp players meeting up with their former playing foes in the pubs beforehand, says it all.I may disagree with you on another point though, I think there may be even more bitterness between Cork and Kilkenny than there is between Tipp and Kilkenny but we'd have to ask the Kilkenny crowd as to which of us they hate more.

Can't stand Kilkenny, all the winning has gone to their heads. Actually saw a grown woman crying this year when we beat them in the QF, and don't even get me started on what the men were like!

I football - Armagh and Down - fairly strong!

Dublin and Meath and Dublin and Kildare.

Its what makes the GAA.

Bitter rivalry muck, don't flatter yourselves, you're nothing more than an irritating itch in the nether regions :-) Now Armagh back in the day, that's what you call a rivalry.

North Antrim and errr............North Antrim! North Antrim clubs expend so much energy despising each other that they have no time or puff left for hating anyone else.
