Hurling snobbery at its finest

Furthermore - if they are playing the new rules in the AI club championship then surely it is classed as a 2014 competition and therefore the player is no longer U16.

Well in the case of transfers, a player who joined in January couldn't play in an All Ireland Club semi or final if they didn't play in the previous years competition.

Ringo,

Creggan won the 2014 Junior Hurling Club Championship. The key is the 2014. The lad was able to play because it is a new year. Now, before you start about the competition starting in 2013, I am sure you are aware that so to did the All Ireland senior football competition. With that piece of knowledge in mind and you being a big GAA man no doubt you will know that the black card came into the rules off this competition at the weekend because it is now 2014. Get it???? Now, I do not believe that young Small was played without everything being checked out first, and it is interesting that an appeal was only decided upon after the Waterford boys had been beaten and not after the replay. Maybe this is due to them thinking they only had to turn up, now it appears they are digging for something to try and get their hands on the trophy. Have lost a lot of respect for their management in the past number of days. Their fans were fantastic and several admitted afterwards that they felt lucky even to get a second chance at it......a very honest appraisal

Frankly I think their appeal is embarassing and they'd be far better off moving on. They should be more concerned with how did they let a 16 year old boy do that sort of damage to them than anything else.

However, I don't think this is clear cut. There may be some grey area there. I wasn't aware of the black cards coming into play, I only got an opportunity to watch bits of the senior semis and didn't see them. If it was a 2014 championship, and a new competition, why can't new transfers play? Looking at the article, Ballysaggart are suggesting that they had young lads in a similar position which they didn't use - and with a parish of only 250 they would have to use whatever lads they could get their hands on - so I presume they would have checked this themselves.

Complaining about a 16 year old playing must be a new all time low in GAA complaints I would say

I also don't see why a new transfer can't play unless they had played championship in that county the year before

Yeah the new transfers is a side issue, but I think the idea is that the team which won the county title and competed in the provincial competition goes forward to the All Ireland series. So, to take St.Vincent's for example, if they'd signed Eamon Fennell had signed for them in January, he could make them a different team to what they were before. It might also discourage lads from hopping on the bandwagon once the provincials are over and winning a club All Ireland.

Without knowing the rules it would seem logical to me (when are GAA rules ever logical?) that a player transferring to a club at the beginning of 2014 who had played competition at any level for another club during 2013 would be ineligible as they would have been registered to a club who in theory could have been playing in the All Ireland Series.

Where I could see a difference with 16 yr old is that they have been with the club and have just come of age in 2014 when they can start playing senior competition so no grounds to make them indligible for the competition.

But that is just trying to apply logic to an illogical organisation. The other bit of logic I dont get is these 16 yr old who would have won the day for the Waterford team. Is Junior All Ireland Level such that 16 yr olds are the key to success?

Are Ballysaggart trying to win the title of "Most Unpopular Club in Ireland"? I'm flabbergasted at this stage. My father travelled to the game with a Waterford man to support Ballysaggart but ended up rooting for the Ulster men. He told me their fans were incredible in terms of their passion and enthusiasm for the game. Also they are a small club based in the North and I'm sure it was tough for them to keep things going throughout the troubles etc. Ballysaggart have had an outstanding year but their reputation will be badly tainted if they continue the way their going.
With regards the issue of "Hurling Snobbery" it reminds me of certain Irish speakers who continually correct one's grammar when they attempt to speak the language. So rather than encouraging the weak they scoff at their shortcomings and hence cocoon themselves in a bubble of self-righteousness…….to the Hurling Snob I say Grow up and you're not a true Gael!

Yeah if a 16 year old can score against men and his from that club you can't ask for replay, better team won end of, Bally are great club and did Waterford proud but in my opinion leave it.Fair play to the Kickhams and Antrim.

Sour grapes. If a replay is granted & they ended up winning the title the good would surely be gone out of it?

I think everyone knows at this stage, after it being mentioned in nearly every report and many comments, that Ballysaggart is a small place, people can stop mentioning that and the 250 figure now.

Hear hear. "A sure they only have 250 ppl. sure aren't they great"
Bennet should not have said that about that ref. Then again do ppl from Wicklow know that much about hurling?

Whatever about the legalities of the player from Creggan being eligible - its disgraceful what the manager of Ballysaggert said as quoted in The Examiner about the referee.
I was lucky enough to see the referee doing MLR and Oulart in the Leinster final. He did a great job. And I watched the game again on TG4 and Donal OGrady constantly made reference to the excellent job he was doing. And he is from Wicklow and what is wrong with that?

I was very impressed with his fitness, his speed of making a decision and his coolness under pressure. He may have made a mistake or two, but who doesn't.

Look at Westmeath and its hurling referees - Barry Kelly, and James McGrath - 2 of the best hurling referees in the country and have been for a considerable time. And is Westmeath one of the top counties for hurling?

Whether its Cork, Tipp, Waterford or Galway 'hurling men' all should admire these referees who have made it to the top and continue to set the standards for others to follow.
isn't it a tremendous achievement for a referee from Westmeath and Wicklow to be up there doing the very best games and counties in the country?

It really is a pity that some 'hurling men' do not grow up!
I watched a referee from a hurling county on Sunday last in Newbridge and he did a good job too!

This is manna from heaven for Ballysaggart's, and Waterford's, future opposition. The first thing players will say when lined up against them will be "You couldn't even beat a couple of 16 year olds from Antrim.....and then starting crying about it HA HA HA HA". Gold dust for other sides. When in a hole.......
