All this talk of Invincibility due to Larry Tompkins interview, got me thinking. What's the longest streak of games a team has gone undefeated for? I'd assume old 3 and 4 in a row teams probably have a good claim but there's more games nowadays with qualifiers and quarter finals etc.

Football: Kerry (2006 - 08) = 10 games unbeaten

Hurling: Kilkenny (2006 - 10) = 21 games unbeaten

Those are the first ones that come to mind for me in recent years, who sets the record?

Kerry (1978 - 82) = at least 14 games unbeaten (assuming Kerry only played one game in Munster)

Well before the qualifiers there was ourselves; 1978 to 1982 and then 1984 to 1987 that was some record, even from 78-86 they only lost 2 games, one to Offaly and once to Cork both last minute goals when 2 points up,

This was done before, but WEXFORD won the allIreland 1915,16 ,17,18 , plus there would be more games in the leinster championship than Munster and I think their was replays in there as well. they had over 20 games unbeaten.

Wexford had at least 20 (haven't found records for early Leinster games in 1919). 1918 was a very strange year though as Louth played in the All Ireland semi-final but then Wexford who beat Louth after that in the Leinster final, then took Louths place in the final! How often did that happen?

Meath 87 to 88 went 11 games unbeaten in championship. Also they won league in 88 now I think they may have been beat in one of those but that could be 87 as the auld memoryiisn't that good but if they went through the 88 league unbeat then that is some record in modern times. But yeah I remember this been done before and wexfords record is the most impressive.

Are we talking Provincial and All Ireland senior Intercouty championship only?

I would imagine in football that Kerry would hold the record with 4 x All Ireland titles in a row, which would have also meant 4 or 5 x Munster Championship titles in a row too.

4 x All Ireland finals
4 x All Ireland Semi Finals
4 x Munster Finals
4 x Munster Semi finals.
At least 16 games unbeaten, perhaps a lot more.

GaryMac82, as far as I know Kerry only played Munster semi finals in 1978 and 1979. In 1979 they put 9 goals past Clare in the "Miltown Malbay massacre" and after that were put straight into the Munster final. So it would be 4 games each in 1978 and 1979 (8 games) and 3 games each in 1980 and 1981 (6 games) plus another 3 games in 1982 ( draw and replayed Munster final with Cork) + All Ireland semi final giving a grand total of 17 games unbeaten if my memory is correct.

Actually that Cavan hurling club did win 21 Co Finals in a row.1990 - 2010.

I believe there are 11 r 12 hurling clubs in Cavan at this moment in time.

In modern day hurling though I think Kilkenny's record will take some beating in Championship hurling.

there was a thread on this last year I think (started by an overly-optimistic Donegal poster :)). I think we calculated that the wexford team would have gone 25 or 26 games unbeaten. remember also to count the year after an all-ireland victory as a county might have won a few games the next year also. the lack of GAA history online has always been a bugbear of mine. it's impossible to get simple facts online . surely the GAA with all their money could collate every county's results and put them on a website. for instance if want to know who wexford played in the first round in Leinster in 1919 and what the score was. where do I go to look for this. It is probably in the local paper archives which you have have to fork out a fortune for. For this year the GAA should appoint an archivest whose role would be to document every inter-county game played since the foundation of the GAA. I'm sure it's all there in the local papers. there is not that many games when you think about it.

Surely that 17 games unbeaten must be the Senior Intercounty Championship football record?

Although I know the Provincial championships vary in games, so there could be in theory be a team who played more provincial games on their way to back to back All Irelands ( Including replay's etc ).
