Anyone got anything POSITIVE to say about Dublin??

There's a nice bistro in Smithfield, not far from the Cobbler/Delaney's. The food is homely and the prices aren't too high.

Good to bet on in championship. If v leinster opposition bet to win if any other team bet against.
With exception of a draw you will do well!!!

Now for an in depth look into the Dublin team:

Goalkeeper: Cluxton is a very good keeper safe under the high ball and a good shot stopper.

Fullback Line: Serious problems. Fullback urgently needed. Some good corner backs, Henry, Griffen, Shaughnessy but dodgy at the best of times.

Halfback Line: Cahill is dublins best back. Cullen good but not influential enough when it matters. Moran useless.

Mid-field: Whelan has been around a long time and is rightly recognized as one of the best in the country. Ryan has come on alot in last two years. However they got shown up at times by Cavanagh and McGinley. Not up there with the best midfielders.

Half-forward Line: Problems. Connolly, Bonner and Jayo usually just passengers. Only really noticed whenthe Dubs are twenty points up. Bernard Brogan has potential but will it be fulfilled?

Full-forward Line: Brogan is one of the best footballers in the country and would walk onto even Kerrys team. Keaney brilliant at times but way too inconsistent. Mossie Quinn and Vaughan nothing more than average place kickers.

Overall Assessment: Cluxton, Cullen, Cahill, Whelan, Ryan and Brogan form a good backbone but at least five players are neede if the Dubs want to compete with the likes of Kerry and Tyrone.

Overall Score: 7/10

Glad to see some positive and well thought out responses to this thread (Samin , Loyal ,bennybunny, keano16 to name but a few) I personally don't think were half as bad as things looked on saturday. I feel we have MOST of the raw materials needed to make a serious attempt at landing Sam. I'd tend to agree with the consensus that full back is where the main problem lies. Surely there's answer somewhere in the county or maybe even moving Whelan back and trying McConnell at midfield (his natural position) for the league? I don't know but surely it's worth having a look at if there's no other option on the club scene. It will be interesting to see who the new manager turns out to be. Hopefully someone with a means of instilling a positive mental attitude to the players & with a better tactical nous than the last couple of incumbents. Here's hoping....

Sorry Liam, there isn't a lot to be positive about. A team can only go to the well so often, and I think that this Dublin side has had its chances. Allowances have been made in the past for some of your players, given their age, but too many of them haven't progressed from being promising young lads to successful senior footballers.

Being totally honest, there wouldnt be more than 2 of them who i would like to see starting for Tyrone next weekend (Alan Brogan and Cluxton) and only a few others who I would like to have on the bench (Cahill, Ryan, Bernard Brogan, Keaney, Henry maybe). I mean, you listed Whelan and Ryan well up your list of top 10 Dublin players, yet they were both cleaned out on Saturday. And this wasnt the first time, as the same pairing were cleaned out by McMahon & McGinley in 2005 replay as well. They arent top class midfielders, although Ryan could be a very good half-back. Paul Griffin has been touted as a top corner back since 2002, but he is consistently out-muscled by bigger corner forwards. Jayo is finished at this stage, and Collie Moran and Paul Casey are no better than when they first emerged (nor is Keaney, which is a shame, as he actually has potential).

The most depressing thing though for a Dublin fan must be how easily they gave up. They have no leaders. Where were Bryan Cullen and Whelan? Or for that matter, where were they ever in any big games that really count? Also, it was awful to see so many Dublin players reluctant to bend their back. Too many preferred to put the boot in instead of going for a 50/50 ball. I've said before that I didnt rate the Dublin '95 team as a particularly great side, but at least they had people who were winners (Curran, Barr, Stynes etc). This side look to me like flat-track bullies, and I think it will be some time before they win an all-ireland. Sorry, but you did ask for opinions.......

Although he wasn't exceptional last weekend David Henry is so underated by everyone and in my opinion the best corner back in Ireland. Pacey, always out in front and rarely makes mistakes, still in my opinion to recieve a roasting off anybody, even our own Graham found it hard marking him in the two games in 2007. Class act in my opinion.

Sorry Liam, didnt read carefully enough. See how closely we all associate you with anything to do with Dublin! Still, harsh as it was, the post stays the same (except replace all references to 'Liam' with 'dubupnorth'!)

I agree with most of what you say there Thomas Clarke but I think you're being particularly unfair on Whelan. He was not cleaned at all or anything like it. He broke ball in terrible conditions, the problem from a Dublin perspective was that the ball he broke was hoovered up by Tyrone players who swarmed at it as if their lives depended on it. Nobody was going to get clean 1st time ball in those conditions.

Agree that Ryan had bad day at office but his passing options in half forward line were non existent, so he overcarried and got crucified for it. Our midfield was not the problem, but the match was lost in the middle of the pitch if you get my meaning. (Our half forwards and backs just didn't attack that loose ball at all)

TC-Appreciate your honesty and would agree with some of your comments. Like I've said earlier I don't think things are as bad as they looked on saturday. Hopefully I'm proven to be right next year but we do have serious problems in vital areas and are about 3-4 players off an all Ireland final just now. We just have to find those players and the right man to lead them.

Liam, was at the semi final last year. Best atmosphere at a match in Decades and I have only missed 2 of the last 20 all irelands. I think our most satisfying win ever. This was because I sincerely thought Dublin were a real threat and as you know that game could have gone either way. Dublin were up, Kerry were up and then the dubs should have scored a goal to put ye ahead and copperfasten one of the best comebacks ever. Had ye down as winners this year. Couldn't find any recent form to go with Tyrone and was shocked at how bad ye were last weekend. Dont know what happened to ye for sure but there are definitely a couple of things wrong like your forwards' rotation system which just confused yourselves. All Tyrone did to counteract this was to man mark the forwards and follow them wherever they went. Tyrone were well capable of this because they play that way themselves anyway. They are always able to attack and defend from numbers 1-15 so it never mattered to them where they found themselves on the pitch like McMenemin playing up on the dublin goalline. Ye totally lost your own positional sense. The second big problem is playing the likes of Jayo on the 40. He wouldn't make my starting Dublin 15. Definitely an impact sub but not a man to get stuck in around the middle of the pitch and win breaking ball. The legs arent there anyway after 14/15 seasons. Also ye panicked after ye kicked a few wides. The analysts on RTE were right when they picked out Tyrones composure. Ye had no composure last weekend when a few of your chances were sent wide. I'm sure some of this was the pressure of all the expectations from the media the crowd and themselves. If you hadn't kicked 2 or 3 of the wides at the start you would have probably scored 1 or 2 of the next 5 wides and would have put away that goal chance in the first half. Basically pressure got to ye. Finally, I know Brogan went off, which was a real kick in the teeth but there was no one left to take over from him. ye got over the problem of throwing away leads but ye still seem to need a very good start to get ye going.

On a good day, with a good start, I believe ye can beat anyone. But, it doesn't always happen like this. Ye need a bit more Iron in yere bellies.

I'd take Cluxton, Brogan and Whelan any day.
