Selling out to Sky Sports

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I agree with the above posts. Sky would present the games in a far better more professional way than TG4 ever could. Its almost as if they dont care how good a pundit or commentator is so long as they speak the cupla focal. I invariably find myself turning the volume down on TG4 not because I dont understand the commentary but because its so bad. Its also cringeworthy when a fella who obviously dosnt speak irish on a daily basis is doing punditry in irish and cant find the word for something so substitutes the english instead.

Media Matters for America, which bills itself as a "progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media," catalogued what it called the ten most "egregious examples" of "distortion" by both Fox News and its TV personalities. Criticism includes several examples of cropping quotes from President Obama, Vice President Biden and Vice President Gore so they appear out of context, using image-manipulation software to edit the appearance of reporters from The New York Times and using footage from other events during a report on the November 5 Tea Party rally in Washington, D.C.; Media Matters said the intention of Fox News was to make it appear as if a larger number of protesters attended the event. The group also called attention to the December 4 edition of Fox and Friends, accusing the program of misleading its viewers with a "questionable graphic" showing the result of a Rasmussen Reports climate-change poll totaling 120 percent.
In November 2009, Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett told viewers that a Sarah Palin book signing in Grand Rapids, Michigan had a massive turnout, showing footage of Palin with a large crowd. Jarrett stated that the former Republican vice-presidential candidate is "continuing to draw huge crowds while she's promoting her brand-new book", adding that the images being shown were "some of the pictures just coming in to us.... The lines earlier had formed this morning". The video was actually taken from a 2008 McCain-Palin campaign rally. Fox senior vice president for news Michael Clemente issued a statement saying, "This was a production error in which the copy editor changed a script and didn't alert the control room to update the video". Fox offered an on-air apology the following day during the same Happening Now segment, expressing regrets for what it described as a "video error" with no intent to mislead.
Fox also apologized for fabricated quotes attributed to John Kerry in an article on its website during the 2004 presidential campaign, stating that the piece was a joke which accidentally appeared on the website.

flack, whilst no news network is trustworthy, and one is always best to be on one's guard, if you can find an equivalent network that demonstrates such a sustained and frequent distortion of the truth, then I stand corrected.
These examples don't even come close to the pictures of Palestinians allegedly celebrating the 9/11 attacks, shown on Sky News, which turned out to be footage from a celebration of an apolitical nature from several months previously.
RTÉ, as bad as it has been in recent years, is the property of the taxpayer and is a public broadcasting service. Whatever agenda it has is not shoehorned into the world vision of one individual.

brend, no advice here, just "reservations". I'm not in love with it, but nor am I fully opposed to the notion. Certainly I would never expect to be obliged to pay to watch football or hurling in Ireland. No offence, but I use those phrases for a reason, please pay close attention to them.

My main point here is the poorly-informed views on the nationality (if you know what I mean) of Sky Sports. Just trying to set the record straight there.

I notice none of you have responded to my allusion to the phone hacking scandal.

How come the only form of bashing that is accptable in ireland Is brit bashing if it was done to any other nationality it would be deemed racist. I am the son of a meath man and a london woman , I hold both nationalities with pride. Hill original point re sky was that it was a briish company. And btw now I know why so many kerry jokes when the kerry lad tried to say its american. So is diageo mate but guinness is still irish. Sky was set up In australia and therefor is still a australian company. U2 are a belgium or somewhere band for tax purposes. Don't mean they not dubs.
Anyways having spent majority of my childhood in uk I speak with a cockney twang. Now I played both football and hurling in london since we returned to meath 4 years ago the only place my speaking is a problem is within gaa. Be it opposing players or fans at matches. This form of imo racist behaviuor is unacceptable at any level. If I was african or asain it would be deemed racist but cause I'm perceived british is alright jack and brit bashing is defended. I will debate with anyone re merits or not of this sky thing , but those who play the british card will get short change from me cause its ignorance and hell yeah they should be marginalised just like those that abused jayo and lee chin. Its all the same.

Think its definetly time Foreverroyal got off his throne and eased off a little on Hill , the selfrighteous stuff is nauseating , lets call it as it is , England played Germany in soccer who were most up for ? ( and I know loads of you couldnt careless as well ) they played in the Rugby last weekend anyone out there utter a few bars of swinglow ? Doubt it ,
How many joining in with the barmy army in the up coming ashes ? Didnt think so .
As a nation when it comes to sport and England in the same sentence ( much like the Scots ) you imeadiatley get a negative response ,
I know the thread is about coverage of our national sport , but as said mention Britain and sport in any context and there will always be those that will imeadiatley go on the defensive .

Foreverroyal I think the anti Britt thing has to do with 800 years of subjugation , if you look up some history books you can find out a lot about it . And as for your kerryman jokes slur is that not racist????

Get off my throne? Is that a dig at my dual citizenship? Not a very clever one but sure that not that surprising.
As foe cheering on england in sport? I gladly will and do so but your right was in pub last night plenty of as it happens dub lads there anf they all cheering on germany, funny thing most of them had man u or liverpool jerseys on, one with gerrard blased across back, I think that's irony isn't it?. I'm not asking anyone to support england just like I'm not asking anyone to support meath. All I'm saying is that as a irish national with a british accent I should not be racially subjected. Simple really. Just like a black person or chinese or whatever should not be. As for the kerry boy. It was 700 years perhaps you are the one that needs to check history books.

Ah lads, why are we reduced to talking about and event that happened in the 1160s?! An Irishman (McMurrough) asked a Frenchman (the king of England) for some help to reclaim his throne, they stayed a while longer than expected, but hey one of our own asked them to send an army over......what did he think was gonna happen?

Ps it's 2013 now, are we not friends again ;-)

So 700 makes it ok does it? You come on here crying that people take the **** out of your English accent and then you go and make a comment about kerryman jokes , you are no better than the people you are crying about, so as far as I'm concerned you can go take your medicine coz you'll get no pity from me.

If we have a sky deal (and I doubt it) it will be the same deal for all TV broadcasters you can read the criteria on the GAA's webiste. Rubert Murdoc is Australian in the same way the Duke of Wellington was Irish. One thing we can say with some certainty Sky is an Irish company in the same way Coca Cola is.

While I appreciate ireland and england are sporting rivals, you cant deny that some, in fact many, irish are over the top with their bias against england. I mean fair enough, all the history etc, you cant deny it, but there is a time and a place. For instance, SKY trying to buy a few gaa games has nothing to do with any of that history, and any fella who lets that cloud his judgement on this issue is out of line as far as Im concerned. They are more than likely trying to show them to appease the irish in england anyway, so what the hell are we on about? This is for irish people! That fact shows how daft this stance is. For me, it shows that this stance is bourne out of bias, and not reasonable thought.

I understand how forever-royal would be sick of hearing the anti-english stuff and it isnt right. People who worked in england years ago often speak of the poor treatment they got over there because they were irish, well are we any better when the shoe is on the other foot? It doesnt seem that we are.

Also, marlon, you say declaring someone a racist is over the top, but if having a set against someone purely because of their nationality isnt prejudiced, then what is it? We have normalised this behaviour in ireland because of what happened in the past, but if a guy from mars came and viewed our behaviour objectively, he would declare the irish to be bigoted, no question.

Anyone here not a slight bit bothered that someone like Murdoch will have his arm in here either? You know, embroiled in the occasional scandal here and there recently?
