UTV to launch new channel for Republic

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

UTV are set to launch a new channel in Dublin in early
2015?? With TV3 heavily in debt this could mean the end
for the station as they both broadcast similar soaps etc??
Could this also shake up GAA coverage?? Would UTV pick up
TV3 games or would RTE regain their monopoly on gaelic
games??

Agree with Tom. UTV are my last choice for watching GAA. If it was on any other station I'd rather watch it there.

UTV used to have the show with Adrian Logan - "end to end" i think you called. It was as good a discussion show on the GAA as any around.

Aren't UTV & TV3 both owned (or own a large percentage in TV3's case) by ITV? I think that is why they have much the same shows.
So in essence they are competing with themsleves which doesn't make ecomonic sense I suppose.

TV3 doesn't get any of the licence fee so was always disadvanatged against RTE. It's commercials are too long and its coverage & presentatation of GAA was poor I thought, but it just doesn't have the budget to compete with RTE. I think it's bad for broadcasting in Ireland for RTE to have such a huge advantage.

UTV also used to broadcast live matches for a two or three
year period in the 90s I think.End to end was a decent talk
show, the only problem was in should have been a hour
show think it only ran for half an hour??

I believe that UTV and STV are the last 2 independent TV stations on the ITV network as all the others, Granada, Meridian, Thames, were bought up by ITV.

Will not be end of tv3 any way but will curtail their viewers as UTV are set to take up the contracts for showing ITV shows like Corrie etc
May shake up GAA coverage

ITV had a large enough but not controlling stake of TV3. Dont think they do anymore so its not like theyre competing with themselves
Commercials are not too long and they have to be as long as they are for TV3 to be able to fund itself
Yes its bad for Ireland that RTE has such a monopoly but hard to stop it

I used to really enjoy that show. Just good discussions from what I remember. Not much in the way of clips or interviews but was very good.

If TV3 aren't going to continue give TG4 championship games. They're commitment to Gaelic Games has been second to none. League, club, U21, Ladies Gaelic Football etc.

Personally I hope all GAA coverage is taken from TV3, in fact I would not shed one tear if TV3 ceased to exist altogether as it really does consist of an awful lot of car crash and sensationalist television with very poor production values, licence fee or not they should be able to do far better, more choice is good although I don't think UTV will be rushing into the GAA market they will most likely retain exclusive rights to their soaps and Saturday night drivel that TV3 currently thrust upon the nation
