He's got them to the last two Finals. If he had one marquee forward of Murphy or Brogans quality they may have won. Calling for his head amazes me. Unearth two decent forwards and Mayo are contenders again.

i honestly dont see Mayo as contenders next year under Horan
I think this is a bad move for ye lads

Had ye moved James on and brought in a fresh face with fresh ideas and convinced a few lads to hang around, ye could have been back, but I think its gone on too long now and it just wont happen under JH.

Bad news for Mayo

Dublin or Cork for Sam in 2014

Mayo coming from Connaught will always flatter to decieve. The province offers them no challenge. They up their game for one big match and then fall flat in the final. This happens time after time. This year their run to the final was easier than 2012(Donegal were not at the races, trained and partied put) but there was so much hype! Mayo for sam etc. It was almost dillusional

People forget they had a lot of top guys carrying serious injuries, all of whom are going to be better next year. That could tip the balance back in their favour as regards coming again. Like I said, all down to the specifics.

Still at the excuses i see. I pressume Andy Moran,O'Connor would two of these guys in question yet O'Connor was Mayos biggest scorer in AI final since the 30s and Moran played his best game for years what more were you expecting from these guys?

Alan Dillion is probably another guy but lets be honest hes in his 30s now and well past his best and i think you have to go back to 2004 since he scored in AI final.

No specifics Mayo simply aren't good enough to win the All Ireland and James Horan has worked wonders to have Mayo punching above their weight

@ Donegalboy23 In fairness in was just this year that Mayo had no challenge in Connacht and that was probably more about the poor performances from Roscommon,Galway on the day than anything else.

Everyone with an ounce of football knowledge knows Mayo under Horan and this present team are gone in terms of winning the all Ireland

Actually, I would say that anyone with an ounce of football knowledge know that these hard fast rules some people go by, are in fact often wrong, and that much more comes down to the team itself and what they face. Kerry made 8 out of 10 finals from 2002 - 2011, therefore losing a final or in fact winning sam does not automatically mean that you cannot come back the following year. It all comes down to the specifics of the team involved. Mayo will be tired after making 2 finals in a row, therefore they can gear their training to suit that. People forget they had a lot of top guys carrying serious injuries, all of whom are going to be better next year. That could tip the balance back in their favour as regards coming again. Like I said, all down to the specifics.

if these players were seriously injured I dont they would have played the final, need Mayo need run in the qualifiers rather than walking through Connacht again.

Horan needs to unearth natural scoring forwards who will deliver on the big day

The Master we had players carrying injuries into the final aswell nearly every team does, but people writing Mayo off is crazy ok they will walk Connaught again then probably get an ok draw in the quarters and before you know it there back in a semi and anything can happen from there. If Mayo were in the Ulster championship I'd give them no chance but because Connaught is so weak they only have to peak once or maybe twice and there in an all Ireland final again. There definitely a top 3 team after Dublin and Kerry.

Until the GAA sort out funding irregularities "across the board" Mayo's massive advantage in Connacht will continue

Mayo spent 500,000 on one team! Their senior footballers... How much did they spend on their minors?

I doubt that the combined spend of Leitrim/Roscommon/London on their respective Senior football teams came even close to 500,000

Also I wonder how many more home games Mayo will get to play against their supposed "rivals" in Connacht in 2014?

Yeah right... "Rivals"

Just another example of unfairness in the GAA

Given that most intercounty Players reach their peak in their mid-late 20s, I think its well off the mark to be writing this Mayo team off as finished. In fact, given the age profile of the team and the substitutes (Ritchie Feeney and David Clarke are the only other players 30 or over in the current Panel), plus the integration over the next few seasons of what was the best minor team to come out of Mayo in 30 years, Id safely predict that Mayo will reach the all Ireland semi final stages 6/7 of the next 10 years. After than anything can happen. Aidan O'Shea, Keegan, Vaughan, Kevin Mc Loughlin and Cillian O'Connor will be mainstays of this team for the next decade.

As for next season, well it would be a brave man who would bet against Mayo being in an all Ireland Semi again next August. Maybe Gaa Lover would, but then again he's been telling us mayo will lose every game they played for the last 3 or 4 years, so Id safely say the sight of a Paddy Power office would probably give him nightmares at this stage!

Mayostar

A fine team no doubt. The age profile is promising

Factor in the Financial advantages / Home advantages / AI experience

An almost guaranteed 1/4 final already booked.

That's a very dangerous beast

Mayo have a lot of advantages over many counties in 2014

I don't know why people ignore the obvious. Before Horan, Mayo were in a bad place losing to Sligo and Longford in 2010. Three years with Horan and they've won three Connacht championships, knocked out the reigning All-Ireland champion each time and reached two finals. Despite all this people would rather judge him on a couple of substitutions. Honestly doesn't make sense to me. Horan is a top manager and you'd to be very silly to want rid of him.
