Will James Horan give it another go?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

All the best to Horan & co in 2014

If Dublin follows the usual trend they'll struggle next year

If Mayo perform like they did in 2013 and Dublin drop back... then who else can stop Mayo?

Kerry and maybe Cork..? That's it...

If he goes onto win it with Mayo next year... it'll be up there with one of the greatest achievements of all time.

End of thread.

Tine to clock her down admin.

It's come to it's natural conclusion.

Horan stays.

Was Horan leaving ever really on the cards? If these two years haven't sapped too much energy from the players than they should be there or thereabouts. Even just one more quality forward (a rare commodity admittedly)and a couple of confident All Ireland winning minors would push them over the line.

roundball you have got it in 1. The rumor mill was in overdrive in mayo with all sorts of anti-horan things flying around. It was nothing new, it happens often in mayo. John Maughan had it a few times, so did John O'Mahoney, starting to see a pattern? We had people on here swearing blind of all these occurances they knew had happended (many of which were contradictory) or were going to happen, and it would all come out. Then, silence... Numerous players make a point of saying they want horan to stay, and he says his future was never in doubt. Now the people who believe everything they hear down the pub arent so sure any more, so we dont hear about it that much. Come the all ireland series they will be demanding tickets again. Maybe they should stay down the pub this year?

I'm happy to see James stay on, he's a nice guy and he has done great work the mayo team. And all the best to him.

if i was a mayo fan i would not be happy with this. Eventually the players will stop believeing in this man
This is the guy who took off Freeman before half time, with him the only Mayo forward who broke a tackle in the first half and scored a point, and then took seamie off when it was obvious it was AOS who should have gone

he is very naieve tactically as has been shown in 2 all ireland finals now

But Liam Freeman had the flu and Seamie was carrying an ankle injury come on man get with it.

Freeman did NOT have 'flu.
Conroy was "flying in training" and it was hoped he could transfer that form onto croker. Freeman should have been re-introduced for conroy early in second half. In hindsight this may have looked like indecision or a master stroke.Unfortunate calls by manager but you get some right and you're a genius, some wrong and you're villified. Maybe third time lucky in 2014.

Horan stays. Unfortunately it won't change anything. Mayo all ire champions is something I will never live to see. And I intend to be around for many a year yet to come.

That post reminds me of the one you made in All Ireland minor thread.

Mayo minors have as much chance of winning all ire as their seniors (none)

Mayo keeping Horan on means everything to them and IMO it would have been a massive blow if he decided to walk away. Each year Mayo have improved under him and only lost this years final by one point he said it himself hes convinced he'll win All Ireland and its hard to argue with the man however BIG pressure on him and his team to deliver next year!

It's all good in theory jimbodub, but it's a massive challenge to pick the whole Mayo squad up for a 4th year. They've lost two All Ireland final's back to back, and to be honest the final scoreline against Dublin this year flattered Mayo by at least 2 points.
Mayo will likely reach the All Ireland SF stage next season due to a free reign in Connaught, but I don't see them winning it.

I suspect Donegal will re-emerge in 2014 as Dublin's main contender's for the All Ireland. Too many people rushed to write them off after relegation this season, then backtracked when they beat Tyrone and Down, before jumping back on the bandwagon for the Ulster final.
They are very strong, and I think they will be a dangerous prospect If they get a run going. Can't see them beating Derry though, so perhaps they might get a back door run going.

Forget Kerry or Cork for an All Ireland next season.

He'll have to do a serious clear out of players if they are to improve.

Easier said than done I'm afraid. I agree that there are several of the squad not good enough. The problem is, we don't have a pool of top players in the county like Dublin do. 1 or 2 new faces will come in. Will they make it? Probably not.

Mayo are not going to win the all ireland next year. They might do it in the nexty 6 or 7, but losing 2 finals on the trot is going to have a huge knock on effect on the team's morale. There are too many teams out there as well who on the law of averages will want to be in the final, and when your chance comes twice, its hard to see how a team can sustain the effort. Galway, Tyrone, Dublin, Kerry, Cork (new manager), ourselves, (revenge? :) even meath and kildare, not to mention the up and coming Armagh, etc etc. Too competitive.

I want to be clear that I don't think James Horan should go, nor do I doubt his ability as a top manager.

I also want to be clear, that I don't doubt Mayo's ability or quality.

I simply don't see Mayo winning the All Ireland next season, as I struggle to see how this current outfit will face into another winter training schedule with the same hunger and determination. They are still among the top 3 or 4 sides in the country.

Everyone with an ounce of football knowledge knows Mayo under Horan and this present team are gone in terms of winning the all Ireland, to even have half a chance for 14 they needed a change in management for obvious reason s the main one being it's now a case of win Sam Maguire or fail, the pressure will be unreal for next year.

They will go down fighting and we will have to listen to the nearly men for another couple of decades about how they should of won it, it is becoming tiresome to say the least. When you're a neighbouring county of two counties that are deemed to be stronger than you are and rightly so as Galway and Mayo are but the difference is delusion , Mayo people are deluded about how great they are, Galway just get on with it and do their stuff on the pitch when they are in an era of having a good side , Mayo just sing songs about how great they are and try to create hysteria , it's really crazy , they will nevertheless learn though. No sympathy as such but I don't wish them bad either.

Actually, I would say that anyone with an ounce of football knowledge know that these hard fast rules some people go by, are in fact often wrong, and that much more comes down to the team itself and what they face. Kerry made 8 out of 10 finals from 2002 - 2011, therefore losing a final or in fact winning sam does not automatically mean that you cannot come back the following year. It all comes down to the specifics of the team involved. Mayo will be tired after making 2 finals in a row, therefore they can gear their training to suit that. People forget they had a lot of top guys carrying serious injuries, all of whom are going to be better next year. That could tip the balance back in their favour as regards coming again. Like I said, all down to the specifics.
