Football All-Stars 2013/Footballer of the Year

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With the nominations now out, who do people reckon will win the awards next month? Have to say I am shocked and disappointed that Gooch wasn't nominated for FOTY. There has been no true outstanding footballer in every game they've played in the championship, and this was the time to honour the greatest player of our generation, after two masterclasses against Cork and Dublin.

Thoughts in general?

Disappointed that Sean Cavanagh has been nominated at half forward!! He was in the top 2 midfielders this year and in my opinion the best player in the country. Tyrones place in the semi final was largely based on seans performances. Were not a one man band but Sean deserves his place at midfield alongside MDM.

Aiden O'Shea probably put in the performance of the year against Donegal but lets be honest that's it. Dublin found him out. Sean, Aiden and MDM are certs for all stars but still

Yea good call re Gooch. Seems like Cluxton is the boy wonder nowadays.

Didn't think Ciaran Kilkenny or Michael Newman deserved a nomination. Thought McLoughlin deserved one.

Cluxton should get it?? I don't see how. Lee Keegan or MDMA and the latter will get it because he was on the winning team. Cluxton is the best keeper in the country but this year his kickouts were outstanding, his shot stopping very questionable.

Absolute joke that Sean Cavanagh is nominated at half forward. He was the best midfielder this year yet he will get a token All Star at wing half forward. Its a travesty for Sean that he has played probably his best year of football as a midfielder yet doesnt even get a nomination in that position

Farneynan- Sean Kavanagh was the 4th best mid-fielder in the all ireland semi final. Doesn't really add up to him being the best mid fielder in the country. McAuley and Seamus O'Shea are 2 best mid fielders in my view.

Ross Carr's all-star team picked today is the first one I agreed with totally and especially where he says that you have to pick the players were they were most influential hence Sean Cavanagh plays in midfield ahead of Aidan O'Shea.

It does defeat the purpose nominating Cian O'Sullivan as a half-back and Sean Cavanagh as a half-forward when both played as midfielders. We can take it now that O'Sullivan will be picked at 6 and Cavanagh at 12.

An All-Star should be given to the best player in each position and if that means leaving out midfielders who had very good years and including others from less competitive positions, then so be it.

Also how much influence did the Sunday Game Team of the Year have on this? Surprising that in the aftermath of the final they went for O'Sullivan and Cavanagh out of position and the All-Star committee are all set to do the same.

The All-Stars are turning into a farce and have been a farce for sometime. Player are maneuvered around like chess pieces and players deserving of awards lose out. The midfielders should be a battle between Sean Cavanagh, Michael Dara, Cian O'Sullivan and Seamus and Aidan O'Shea. But no Cian O'Sullivan would have missed out. He played 35 Minutes at centre half back and will steal the position of Donal Vaughan. As for Cluxton getting nominated for player of the year is a joke and completely unfair on Rory Beggan and Robbie Hennelly who go up the awards knowing already there not getting one. Cluxton Conceded 5 goals in the Championship his kickouts are brilliant and so his his free taking. I dont think any player should get an all star for free taking never mind player of the year nomination. Rory Beggan played four championship games and conceded no goals. Hennelly pulled off outstanding point blank saves in the all ireland final and in my eyes both are entitled to the goalkeepers position over Cluxton.

Its not an anti Dublin rant but in my eyes Dublin don't deserve the most all stars due to the impact of their bench in winning games. Bernard Brogan played in the two big games and will get the nod at corner forward. Cian Mackey was a shoe in for the number 10 shirt but will miss out because of Sean Cavanagh being pushed to half forward. Mackey was outstanding all year and I had the pleasure of seeing him in the flesh 6 times this year and he was a joy to watch.
My own county should get at least one all star In Colin Walshe if he doesn't get one it will be robbery. I also believe Dessie Mone should get one as he was the driving force of Monaghan ulster success in 2013 and is one of the most underrated players in the country but unfortunately he won't.

Ever since Peter Canavan robbed Brian McGuigan of an all star in 2003 the all star have lost any meaning in my eyes.

Yeah the maneuvering of players to made up positions is a joke. They have lost all value and rather than be aspired to they are now a joke. If this continues they will have cluxton nom as a forward next year
Either revert to best player in that position or scrap them all together. I'm in favour of latter.

Cluxton has many fine attributes, but saving shots is not one of them. He let in 3 goals against Kerry and got nowhere near any of them, had contribution to two of them. The title says Goalkeeper, he wasn't the best there for sure. If kicking out gets parity value with keeping out scores, well he has no equal there. But then again he is the greatest keeper of all time or so we're told...

My POTY noms would be Cavanagh, Gooch and Keegan as my winner, no Dubs have stood out as much as these 3 for me.

It isn't really about your position anymore as it seems they are trying to accomodate for as many of the best players as they can, which you can't really complain about. O'Sullivan, despite not really playing #6, I don't really have complaints about him getting that position because there haven't been any outstanding Centre half-backs this year. If Mackey misses out it will be ridiculous though, Cavanagh shouldn't have been moved to half forward, he should be in MF with McAuley. Mackey will more than likely miss out now despite being the best #10 in the country this season.

yup mackey will miss out now which is a joke.

cluxton's nomination for POTY is rediculous!

Sean Cavanagh and Colm Cooper were the two best players in this year's championship.

Keegan was very consistent, but Michael Dara McCauley will get Player of the Year as he put in two excellent performances in the semi final and final.

It's as if the nominations have been made after the all-stars are chosen.

Well done to the allstars but I'm disappointed in Sean Kavanagh picked at 12 and Cian O'Sullivan at 6 as both these players played predominantly in midfield. Cavanagh probably deserved an allstar for some of his performances but it was evident the people who nominated them where they did, didn't feel they would get one in their playing positions so put them in elsewhere.

Thought Seamus was more consistent than Aidan. Glad to see James O'D get one.
