Question for Mayo history buffs & GAA Bettors

"In the 26 years between 1955 and 1981 Mayo won two Connacht titles in 1967 and 1969. Changed times."

Is there any expanation for the demise of Mayo football over this time?? In '51 Mayo had just won 2 in a row but it took them another 38 years to win a semi final.

TheMaster will say it's because of the population size in Dublin and the funding gap during those years.

I generally think teams don't win for long periods because of emigration (cripples counties with smaller populations)......or down to good/bad coaching, a bit of determination, lack of bottle or teams are just muck!

I was sitting in the Hogan beside some Kerryman. He wouldn't shut up about some small Kerry forward called Gene somebody? He called him genius and reliably informed me he was the shmallest inter-county player in the country at the time. He wasn't too smart on that particular day and my Kerry friend had long gone with 10 minutes left. Maurice Fitzgerald was the only genius on the pitch for Kerry that day and what a player he was.

Interview with John Casey, Mayo's star forward that day against Kerry, later won a Connacht club title playing in goal for Charlestown -

Correct CBAR.......Mayo got into their first AI Final in 38 years by defeating Tyrone in the semi-final on Aug 13 1989,the Sunday I emigrated to USA. When I touched down in JFK I found out the result...bad timing or what!!

I recall when it got to semis Meath were rank outsiders 6/1 I remember having a few punts on them. I had against a few of that team and honestly they were the best I or anyone had ever seen. A friend of mine was on the 21s team with Giles and Graham etc and said that both trev an gg would be remembered for years after they stopped playing. He still reminds me and takes pleasure in the I told you so mantra.
But Tyrone were raging fav for 96. After we took them to cleaners we became slight favs. We nearly threw it away. Which boylan referred that we would have won more all ire with that team than just two. That Meath team was probably the best team since Kerry 80s. And underachieved in many people eyes. Anyway mayo didn't throw away 96. But the far superior and better team Meath nearly did

All Connacht teams sucked in the 70's and 80's

A bit harsh suckvalleypaddy- Gaillimh '71-'74 and the great 4-in-a-row Ros Comáin team had a lot of breaks go against them; if the Rossies had beaten the Dubs in the 1979 semi they may have had the experience to win the next year. Gaillimh in 1982 were pipped by a point by Uíbh Fháilí and we all know what happened next.

In fact though from 1968-1991 no team from Connacht or Uladh beat any team from Mumhan or Laighean, 'twas the Westerners who tended to be the closer province, though the roles have been well and truly reversed now. Thank God those days of predictability are over, championship is infinitely better now!

Nonsense, Mayo were six points up midway through the second half. Meath's equalising point bounced over the crossbar from 60 yards out. If that isn't throwing it away, I don't know what is.

On the other hand, we were well beaten in 2009, shocking performance.

Don't know about the overall time period, but the great Mayo side of the late 40s and early 50s was destroyed by emigration, RTE did a documentary on it about 10 years ago.
