I particularly liked this quote TheGatekeeper, I believe it speaks for itself!

A decade after their emergence, they are still outside the establishment and will never be national darlings

And that's exactly where I want us to remain, OUTSIDE the GAA establishment.

That's true MichaelO I enjoyed those years too, there wasn't much 'sticking fingers in eyes' but an awful lot of sticking balls in the Mayo net!

Michaelo you shouldn't have brought up the 2005 final, as that game more than anything sums up 51longagos point.
Gooch cooper was roasting the Tyrone defence until he was knocked out cold, and then eye gouged in the space of about 5 minutes.
He wasn't quite the same after that.
Ah well, win at all costs eh?

I much prefer the so called puke football to the brainless football (and I stress brainless) they played in the late 60's and early 70's, catch, kick and hope, not an ounce of strategy or teamwork on show, dreadful stuff indeed, in fact I almost felt embarrassed watching some of the stuff on TG4 GAA Gold.

And some people harp back for the auld days?

Tyrones blanket defence was within the rules, no problem there.
My gripe was with the diving and feigning injury that played such a huge role in their victories (especially in 2003).
Some of the sledging was hard to deal with as well. Not much decency.

Muhammad Ali was one of the biggest "Sledgers" in sporting history. I have rarely ,if ever, heard him criticized for it. Let me be one of the first,Ali you are an absolute disgrace to your sport and sportsmen everywhere. Lol! Not saying you should be doing this by the way it's just some of you would need to wise up with your petty criticisms. It's well known that Tyrone players themselves took plenty of verbal tirades on the pitch.

It was probably the match that defined Tyrone football. They were terrible to watch that day, it was one of the worst games I've seen. But it is unfair that they have been defined by it. After that, Tyrone were a different animal. I think their performances in the 2005 and 2008 finals were as close to perfect as you could get, because they were up against the best team of the last 25 years (Kerry), and Kerry actually played VERY well in both matches. I get annoyed at people suggesting Kerry bottled it against Tyrone, because in 05 and 08 they did very little wrong, Tyrone were just out of this world.

"They're like a pack of wolves"! That line is with me forever. Happy Aniversary "Total Football" and thanks to the Tyrone heroes who bagged us 3 all Ireland titles with their magnificent on field football all over the pitch! Come on The Red Hands!!

It was an unfair comment then & still is.

In 2003 Kerry scored 0-6 in the semi final v Tyrone. In 2001 they managed 0-5 v Meath. Why did Pat not call Meath's football puke football?

Tyrone did what it took to win in 2003. By 2005 they were playing some beautiful stuff. They beat us in the 2000 u21 final. We had no complaints.

That phrase should never have been used.

Thanks again lads for starting another Tyrone bashing thread. I wonder if they were counted how many such threads have appeared the last few weeks? Sorry state of affairs to be honest.

Wouldn't it be nice if Pat Spillane were to go on record publicly and renounce these words and put this shameful tag that has hung over, not just Tyrone but many other Ulster counties who dared to challenge the status quo. He would certainly earn my respect.

Really getting boring now all these Tyrone bashing threads, count the cynical fouls on Sunday and I'll guarantee Mayo will have just as many if not more than Tyrone.

People associate THAT match with defence, and the iconic clip of the match was in the Kerry half. The tactics were all about pressure and work rate. Tyrone completely overwhelmed Kerry in the first half. And as a senior team that had not achieved anything and without Peter the Great; they sat back as nearly any team would do in the same situation, such as Donegal V Kerry/Cork last year.

Most people probably haven't even seen the match! It's a pity Spillane's words saying Tyrone played Total Football in 2005 haven't caught on!

Maybe, and it might be another while yet,who knows. Most of us don't have a sense of entitlement and are grateful for the success that we have seen over the last 10 years. We love our football and are proud if our players and management. That's it really.

And in ten years time we can have a thread about the return of real football. As the puke ends this weekend. With the humiliation of Tyrone . No more all Ireland's for teams with limited talent and bringing game to a dragging diving match.
