football first In the camogie semi final on Saturday, a Cork defender performed a rugby tackle on a Kilkenny forward to prevent a goal, conceding a penalty.
That to me is a tactical or deliberate foul or an intentional foul (not a cynical foul). It was punished by a penalty, but it does carry a heavy punishment, maybe the player should walk as well. However IMO a "cynical" foul (mostly seen in football) is a whole series of petty fouls that are used to disrupt the opposition game, run down the clock and just generally waste time by whatever means, pulling and dragging, tripping, kicking ball away, lying on the ball. If you do that in hurling you are practically given a free score to your opponents and they will punish you from anywhere. But in football it can't be done they get a free but its right outside the range of the opponents kicks thats the cynical aspect and it seems to carry no penalty at all. As a result it is ruining the game of football.
But lets be honest a defender will instinctively haul an opponent down to deny a certain goal, be it hurling/camogie, soccer, basketball, that is not cynical fouling in my book. But make no mistake in other sports the penalties for committing these type of fouls are an awful lot harsher.
But the "cynical" stuff just drives people mad and it is what is giving football a very bad image, hurling much less so because its a much different game.
