Pubs showing soccer over hurling

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

How many pubs will have the soccer on Sunday over the hurling. I know lots around Wexford town and county will. When club games or league games on tnag in February, March etc you have no hope of seeing GAA in a wexford pub

Lucky enough the pub I drink in has enough TV's to cater for every taste, be it GAA, Racing Soccer, Rugby etc, but I've noticed that most young lads these days have more interest in the soccer than they have when their own county GAA team are playing live on tv some have no interest whatsoever just soccer socer soccer on the brain, so if you went to a pub with only 2 tvs good chance the racing will be on one and the soccer on the other.

Good post btw.

Living in London and the day of the All-Ireland football final last year my wife told me that the Local Irish Centre showed a Spurs match instead of it.

It has started again :-( A lot of it is that pubs pay for Sky so they think they have to have it on all the time. In the pub I go after work and sometimes at weekends, they will have Sky soccer coverage on both screens and I've seen them been reluctant to change over even one screen for rugby/racing/GAA/golf even though few or sometimes anyone was actually watching the soccer. I would be surprised if they show the hurling on Sunday to be honest. Anyone who drinks in the place with any interest will most likely be at the match anyway.

Who could blame the pubs showing soccer over GAA, The Gaelic football season has hardly been two entertaining, Mayo and Dubin dominating their provinces, Who would have expected either Cork or Kerry to contest a Munster Final? Then the fine art of defending on display up North..

In fairness the hurling has been more entertaining as there has been a few shocks with Galway Tipperary and Kilkenny being eliminated earlier than expected

GAA shown in my local in the Summer over everything else. Then horse racing. Any league game involving Mayo would also be shown over Soccer etc. Im im honest it was Liverpool v Man Utd on TV most of the bar would watch that instead of say the Munster Hurling club final but it would still be on, on one TV.

CRedmond, it has little to do with entertainment. Obviously! Ones I notice gawking open mouthed at soccer on TV give all the appearance of having the alertness of a hibernating hippopotamus. The hynotic drone from such festivals of sport as hosted in Wigan and Stoke are probably a suitable white noise for their sucessful efforts to shut down their brains.

Probably the most stupid thread I've seen on HS. I am a GAA follower and hence I tend to go to the prominant GAA pub/pubs in my town so there is no question of the publican not showing Gaelic Games. Surely that is the situations with all "PROPER" GAA fans.

CRedmond you are right, I mean who would want to look at all the cheating, diving, biting, tactical fouling, pressuring referees, parking the team bus etc. etc. we now see in our game. Thank God there is none of that in soccer. Oh wait.....

But on a serious note (good question being posed), I know a lot of pubs at home show both sports but will always have the soccer on the larger screens and have the GAA on in some corner. In saying that, as someone else has mentioned, a lot of younger ones seem more interested in watching soccer. The pub has to please their clientele (majority anyway) at the end of the day.

The whole English soccer thing here galls me. While I accept there's "no harm" in it the amount of time, money & energy expended on it really irks me. Much of the coverage is seriously low brow & you get the feeling of covertly dumbing down the audience through repetitive headlines & sensationalism. Then again, this is what's happening in the music media too. Gaelic games are still not seen as being cool unlike soccer & rugby.

Soccer is a better and much more popular sport, therefore it will always be shown over hurling

Shocks in the football too. Monaghan v Donegal. London making a Connacht Final. Since 1995 ( when Blackburn won The Premiership ) 7 different counties have won the All-Ireland. Since then 4 clubs have won The Premiership. Guess who are the favourites to win it this year. Doh let me see, Utd, Chelsea, City and the outsiders of the group Arsenal. Same old, same old after all the huffing, puffing and ridiculous hype. And you talk about shocks. The favourites for the All-Ireland are a county who have not won it in 62 years.

You could almost predict the Premiership on the basis of the transfers - which I only know about because Des Cahill nevers shuts up about them on the radio :-). More akin to Monopoly than a genuine sport.

you may get out of New Ross stumunstriver where hurling is detested in every make, shape and form and head up to the hurling heartland of enniscorthy, there wont be a pub in the district showing soccer over hurling.i have been in wexford town regularly at this time of the year and if you go to most of the pubs like gaynors, maggie mays,t morris etc they will be showing hurling,so i dont know where you are coming from with this thread.

hurlingdub - "it has little to do with entertainment" - people hardly g to pubs to be entertained or enjoy themselves

tirchonaill92 - Donegal players being targeted - that was a good statement from Jim considering he;s managed to ruin football with his negativ tactics.. He also developed the most physical team in Ireland since he took over.

Greengrass "The favourites for the All-Ireland are a county who have not won it in 62 years" Mayo will bottle it like they did for the last 62 years and I doubt theres ever been a louth hurling game ever televised????

my local in London will have GAA on the two massive screens and teh soccer on a small tv behind the bar, know there regular clientele and best drinkers are there for the GAA. Also have a catholic club beside us which wouldnt even have the soccer on, and the drink is cheap.
Was in Amsterdam a few years back and was in a fairly big Irish bar, they had the rugby on (Lenister game) and I asked had they the league final between Kilkenny and Dublin on the next day, said as Man U v Arsenal was on they wouldn't be showing the hurling, told me try a pub called Mulligans. Next day wandered into Mulligans, no one in the place asked the barman if he was showing the games put on the TV and u21 game between Galway and Cavan was on. Next thing about 20 lads came in asking if he had the soccer on, said he couldn't put it on as he had a lad in watching the Gaelic, so any time I'm in Amsterdam I go back.

Perfect 10 what are you on about Enniscorthy being a hurling town?
Its very very much a dual town with Starlights and Raparees. Do you know Stamps pub in Enniscorthy for example, or Doyles Rasher Counter.....go in there when Wexford are playing a football match and tell me there is no football in Enniscorthy..
Your talking out your hoop!
New Ross might be a one code town (football) and Wexford town is a football town also but Enniscorthy is a Dual town, 100%
