The media in the South is vehemently anti-Northern Nationalist, rabidly pro-Unionist and this has spilled over into sports coverage. The term 'Nordie' is used as a derogatory term and insult by many Southern people even directed at other Southern people. I travel a lot to the South and on radio I hear the term 'ye Nordie ye' used as a lot as a put down and the North aeems to be a great topic for fun, ridicule and contempt. I don't know why that is, is there a jealousy there, are people so unhappy at their lives that they have to insult others to feel better. Now don't get wrong I find many people in the Republic individually decent but collectively the South can be a very insulting, arrogant, unfriendly and indeed nasty place for many Northern people.

@Ulsterman I think your being a little sensitive here. The slagging of other parts of the country by the National(Dublin)media happens across the board, not just about the North. Just a few examples.

The midlands- boring hole
Limerick- stab city
Kerry/Cork- accents constantly ridiculed in the media.
I wouldn't take it too seriously its just the usual idiots in the media looking for something to say.

The ridiculous thing about this is, this thread references joe brolly's comments on cavanagh, and the outcry it has caused, attributing it to an ulster bias. Yet brolly made similar comments against mayo last year and that created just as big, if not a bigger outcry. Considering their next opponents were just as cynical it was probably even more biased than the tyrone comments. Yet mayo got panned for it. Where is the ulster-specific criteria here? Answer - there is none. This is another nail in the ulster bias coffin, yet it will be ignored by the ulstermans of these boards, who in my opinion, displays the biggest bias as regards north/south I have ever seen, yet talks like he is the one who is wronged. I will tell you now, if people from the south, as you have grouped us, made the same, or even half the assertions ulsterman does only in the opposite direction, we would be hung, drawn and quartered for it by the likes of ulsterman.

There might be some people who are biased - probably so in fact and in both directions. But that doesnt give anyone the right to say everyone and everything is biased. It isnt the case and to say so is wholly unfair. Tyrone have been very cynical in their last 3 games, to add to their reputation, deserved may I add, for being one of the most cynical teams in general. It has nothing to do with anything outside these parameters.

The simple answer is that everyone is parochial and biased. Any reading of the past would suggest as much. That idea extends far away from our shores too. The difference is some unfortunate souls can't deal with such realisations and spend far too much time thinking about it. Luckily the majority of us have more important things to think about. If someone told me they were from Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Down, Antrim or Armgah, it wouldn't even register with me that that's 'officially' a different country, or a different people, or whatever. I struggled to even think of the six counties just there. It makes no difference to me, and I'm sure that's true for 90% of people. People hear comments like the ones you've mentioned above, and they remember them, but they don't remember the doubtless many more times that nothing was said, because that's unremarkable. And it's also understandable.

Calm down a little bit. Nobody is out to get anyone. I'm not out to get anyone in the 'North', and nobody from the 'North' is out to get me.

Basically, I think that both sides have to stop this paranoia. I dislike a lot of Ulster football, that is not a bias against Ulster and it's people. I think anywhere you go in the world, most people you will meet are good, and some are bad. That is not exclusive to Ulster, it is true for everywhere. I dislike a lot of their football as I say, but I dislike plenty teams in the 'South' as well, when it comes to the football they play. I often shout for Kerry in the football, but they were like watching paint dry this weekend.

To prove my point, I have always longed to see Antrim get their house in order and be the hurling county I believe they could be.
