Rules that aren't enforced

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Tommy Walsh should have been ouside the 21 and the D last sunday but instead ran inside the 13 before the penalty was struck and scored an OG for his team in doing so. Fast Forward 30 seconds and the bould Tommy was back in there for the retake and but for Antony Nash's wonder save would of been a hero with his 'Goal. Its a yellow Card offense Tommy. Down scored a similar goal in this years C Ring final and went on to beat Kerry by a single point. Referees must get more proactive in keeping players outside the 21 and D in a penalty situation to end these infringements.

1449917 14 yard free's if the keeper or any player leaves or does not remain on the goal line... it's a penalty

That was given in a match in Meath last year, club that gave away the penalty didn't understand that was the rule. Let us just say it got nasty.

My biggest problem is with the steps being taken. This goes for hurling and football.
As a defender we were trained to wait for the ball to be 'played within the 4 steps' and then get the hand/hurley in. I think that proper enforcement of this rule could see less jersey tugging by defenders.
Seriously though, seeing players get away with 8 short or fast steps is ridiculous.

Regards a player hopping the ball off the ground any number of times basketball style as long as he doesn't actually catch it.

I remember James McCartan doing this for Down against Derry in '94 while being tackled and then sent over a fantastic point.

Then I was at a league game with Longford and Leitrim and it happened about 4 or 5 times and the ref gave a free everytime against both sides. After the last incident the crowd was quiet for a moment, some lad piped up "Ref get off the field!!!", to a great laugh!

I can't stand where a ref allows a player to take 4 steps. That player is then tackled (fairly or unfairly) and is given play on by the referee. And is then allowed to take ANOTHER 4 steps before actually playing the ball. It's rubbish. It's either a free to the guy for the tackle if it was a foul, or it's a free to the defender for the guy taking 8 steps. It CANNOT be play on. You see this all the time.

Jez I have never in my life seen this rule enforced cos if it was there would be 3 or 4 penalties per game... i can only imagine the carnage

It happened for the goal the Meehan scored against Cork, that would have been a penalty had it not gone in....

That one in Meath was in the examiner a couple of months back, Saturday sport section.

Chris McGuinness' goal/certain penalty...............

Agreed - shocking decision but the ref was 40 yards away. For Beggan's steps he was within 10 yards and had a clear view, brought the whistle up but clearly chickened out

I know what you mean here. Its almost an unwritten advantage rule where refs say "ok you were sort of fouled there but you sort of fouled the ball too so we'll call it evens"

are any of the guys on here actually referees, just wondering what courses they have to go on and what guidelines they are given. You should see the standard of refereeing outside of Ireland, you'd be grateful for the ref's back home........

Agreed - but there was two umpires inches away - what the hell were they at ? Two of them !!!!!

The overcarrying was also a free - agreed.

The fisted point should be disallowed unless it is clearly fisted. At least that was the rule when first introduced. I've seen some of them practically thrown over, and I've yet to see the rule enforced.

The 13m encroachment thing is disgracefully neglected. In the game last Sat evening there were numerous examples of frees being taken while an opposing player stood within 5 metres either level with or behind the freetaker, clearly roaring at them; I doubt they were wishing them good luck.

The steps thing is ridiculous and certainly the lack of enforcement of the rule leads to fouling. What else can defenders do? It is interesting to peruse the analysis of Jamie Clarke's 'goal' against An Cabhán, where each analyst bemoaned the ref's decision to blow for a free for holding before he buried it. Not one person remarked how Clarke had taken 8 steps before he was fouled. Similiarly there was a lot of talk of Cill Chainnigh's brilliant 2nd goal that put the nail in the coffin in the replay last October, but whoever came in along the endline in front of the Nally and passed it to Walsh took 11 steps. I'm still waiting for an expert to notice!

Another is in the act of handpassing, when the arm holding the ball is pulled as the trigger is drawn, and the pass goes astray. I've experienced this a lot while playing too, and more often than not no free awarded

In the interest of letting the game flow some refs seem to let players carry for around 4 seconds instead of 4 steps, or at least the time it would take to move 4 steps. I would love to see refs at all levels quickly pop into the changing rooms before a game and explain " I will give a free if I see X, Y or Z".

It might be helpful and go some way to dealing with the common gripe of inconsistency. Has anyone heard of this before?

umpires should have a buzzer to the ref if the full forwards jerseys are being pulled its very annoying as a full forward having someone pull your jersey

Are goalies allowed to sream "WIDE" into the umpires face everytime a ball goes across the line, even when its over the bar?
They shouldn't be allowed to anyway.
