It's a shame that less skilful teams have to resort to other means to get results and in the process turn a lot of people off watching and playing the game.

Oh yeah and the Galway footballers are turning away people at the gate every week are they?

ismcgee and his galway cohorts serious...i sat through that match and was bored silly...the defending from both teams was atrocious...at one point i counted 10 galway players in defence and not one of them putting in a tackle...is this the future for gaelic football...a wimpish performance afraid to put their hand in to tackle...give me monaghan v donegal anyday

Its a common known fact that Galway have a hardcore (if small) group of supporters who support through thick and thin like most counties. The rest hop on the bandwagon when we start winning. I have no problem admitting it. Its just a shame gaelic football isn't beautiful anymore. Its hurts me knowing that we have to adapt to the modern game. Saturday was a good open game of football to watch against Cork albeit some naive defending was on show. I'd love to see more games like that but I know it just won't happen.

I think the thread starter is on a wind up.

It was a very enjoyable game although it lacked some intensity.

I'd rather watch a game like that then Donegal v Monaghan. The majority of us want to see more open games and under the current rules that is very unlikely to happen.

I'm not sure the black card will result in making it a more open game.

Was it Vince Lombardi or one of the other American football greats who said "Show me a good loser......and I'll show you a loser"? Eugene McGee's sanctimonious, pious nonsense is just boring now. He constantly harps on about a nostalgic era in a Disneyland make believe football world that never was and it is so repetitive and yawning. TG4's Football 'Gold' quite blatantly shows that some of the football in the 70's and 80's was just awful kick and rush, kick the ball up the field as hard as you can stuff with very little skill on show. There were dirty strokes, off the ball hits and as many cynical knocks as now and football wasn't better. I have always got the impression that McGee seems to get very annoyed at the success of Ulster sides at the expense of Kerry, Mayo and Galway and this appears to really rile him. I often wonder is it geography that miffs him and not style or substance.

Would agree wholeheartedly about what Eugene McGee in the Independent had to say about Galway's performance on Saturday. "Exceptional" it was labelled, and compared to the other two games on Saturday and the majority of games this Championship it was "fine wine compared to stale beer". It's of little consolation to us now I understand, but at least we are getting some recognition for the way we play our game. It's a shame that less skilful teams have to resort to other means to get results and in the process turn a lot of people off watching and playing the game.

You're football died out 10 years ago and it ain't coming back. Yous were embarrassed by your biggest rivals on home ground playing your "exceptional" football. The Donegals and Monaghans of this world would roast this Galway team. A sad day indeed when a once proud football county has to seek solace in a moral victory.

An absolutely rubbish article from McGee.Galway were medicore defensively and were carved open on numerous occassions by Cork. The goalie made 3 or 4 very good saves that kept Galway in the game and he was name Man of the match in the indo which is not usually taken as a good sign for any team. The game was played at a much lower intensity than we will see this weekend or have seen in alot of other games this year and if Cork were in good form they would have destroyed Galway, they gave Galways forwards alot more space than they would get a against most teams.Put Galway in against Dublin and it would have been a massacre. They got far too much praise for their similarly nice performance against Kerry in 2008.It was an enjoyable match but well off the intensity we will see at the weekend I suspect. There is no right way to play football or any other sport as Eugene McGee suggested, the only right way to play the game is to score more than the opposition.

Basketball GAA streaker where no one is allowed to tackle and the audience turns off in droves or falls asleep on the sofa.

"If you can accept losing, you can't win!"
"Some people try to find things in this game
that don't exist but football is only two things;
blocking and tackling."

Mcgee would do well to read Lombardi from time to time!

In fairness after this year we might not see Donegal or Monaghan challenging for a long time. I can't say I find much enjoyment watching either team, do you?

I agree the likes of Spillane and a few others get rather nostalgic about bygone years but they do have a point on how the game should be played.

it would have been good if even a tackle had been put in...no-one here is talking about rugby tackles...the turnovers created by tyrone and meath defenders were fine examples of the art of tackling...unfortunately what we saw in the galway defence was an example of lazy defending..players trying to play a blanket defence but not actually tackling..sure tyrone scored 0-17..the exact same amount of scores as galway...galway concede 1-17 which could so easily have been 4-17,and against the likes of mayo would have been beaten to a pulp again...so stop this nonsense..this is a poor galway team as mayo demonstrated

If Cork scored the 4-5 goals they should have and Meehan didnt score his wonder goal we would have lost by 11-12 points and we would be tslking about how far this Galway team is behind the rest of the pack. That is a fact

I believe to watch an open, fast paced game that is high scoring then watch puke 14/15 men behind ball be aide that isn't what the game was intended to be like so I agree with Ashure

I expected Cork to hammer Galway but having been at the game, I can honestly say Galway were excellent and a young exciting team. Most enjoyable of the 6 teams to watch and by some distance. A small bit of experience cost them. But a team building for the future.
Some comments on here are arrogant and jealous! For me Galway have a chance of an All Ireland in 2/3/4 years, Donegal/Tyrone supporters I dont think ye will be contesting All Irelands then! Any of the negative comments on here are from people who didnt see the game

think mcgee was referring to the open, attacking football, decent foot passing and great scores--and it was great to watch, you'd never see a game like that in ulster. Defensively they have issues but people watch the game more for the attacking play than defensive play. Galway seem to produce natural footballers and good scoring forwards-it beggars belief that my own county with such a huge population have only produced one decent forward in 15 years!! Would be great to see Galway win Sam playing that type of football but we all know better- those days are gone and the game is worse for it but it is what it is.
