Galway a model for how football should be played.

Would agree wholeheartedly about what Eugene McGee in the Independent had to say about Galway's performance on Saturday. "Exceptional" it was labelled, and compared to the other two games on Saturday and the majority of games this Championship it was "fine wine compared to stale beer". It's of little consolation to us now I understand, but at least we are getting some recognition for the way we play our game. It's a shame that less skilful teams have to resort to other means to get results and in the process turn a lot of people off watching and playing the game.

Couldn't agree more. Shame the rugby element has crept into our sport, but at least we're doing our bit to keeep the game alive!

I have been a huge admirer of Galway football since I have been watching football. The team of '98 to '01 was magnificent. However I take issue with your post. Galway play beautifulfootball. They played beautifully on Saturday and lost. Their season is over. They have won nothing. You as a Galway supporter will be watching other teams for the rest of the season when you should be watching your own. You conceded 1-17 and lost against a team that was there for the taking. You talk about being recognised. There is more to football than having your hair ruffled by journalists and being told how beautifully you played. Football is about winning. You talk about stale beer. The Meath Tyrone game was a cracking contest especially in the 2nd half. The essence of any sport is the nature and intensity of the contest. Clones on July 21st this year may not have been pretty but it was a ferocious contest. Your last sentence is pompous in the extreme. You talk about less skilful teams turning people off watching and playing the game. How come Galway's supporters turn out in such small numbers to support them ?

Galway are a model of how not to adapt to the modern game.

I remember ye getting heaped with praise after you played Kerry in 2008, you've achieved a lot since then have you not. It's easy to compliment someone when they're not winning anything, its the same as Kerry fans going on about Down football,in other words, no threat.

Was down to watch the Galway/Cork game on Saturday myself, Galway did play some great stuff and it was a pleasure to see some of those fella's in Croke Park in the flesh...But you have to wonder why they didn't change to see the game out. The Cork goal was scandalous to concede, honestly, it was that naive it was like watching a minor team. It was a great pity because they deserved more in my opinion.

When I hear of the whole beautiful football thing, and this arguement creeps up I always think of this quote though -

Gawd it's horrible how all the knockers come from counties that just don't have it, so have adopted the robust modern style.

Galways fancy dan culture is wonderful to watch in all its glory but they will have to unfortunately adopt and buy into the modern game but even if they only go half way in meeting it and selling their soul if you like, they will win all Irelands again.

Love Galway football and always will.

Of course you love Galway, we all watched that first round training match, riveting stuff altogether, give me two defence minded teams in a close encounter over a mismatch any day.

Ahsure,

Stop bringing abuse upon us, Galway played well and they lost, like every team who doesn't adopt a defensive template. This traditional 15v15 man on man is history and any team that tries to play won't win diddly squat.

Look at the hurling championship, the 3 best squads Kilkenny,Galway and Tipperary are on their holidays because they all thought they would win on talent alone without a strategy, they were beaten by team e.g. Cork,Dublin,Limerick and Clare because they had a method and game plan.

ismcgee and his galway cohorts serious...i sat through that match and was bored silly...the defending from both teams was atrocious...at one point i counted 10 galway players in defence and not one of them putting in a tackle...is this the future for gaelic football...a wimpish performance afraid to put their hand in to tackle...give me monaghan v donegal anyday
