Joe Brolly walking a tightrope?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Lets not forget 2011 Tyrone v Donegal when Tyrone were well in control with Joe McMahon who after recovering from a broken jaw is lording it at full back.

Enter substitue Leo McLoone. Whose first act is to punch Joe McMahon in the jaw from behind.

Joe leaves the field concussed followed my McLoone subbed again about 5mins later - to a big slap on the back from McGuinness

Result: 2 Donegal goals and the result for Donegal

Not since Meath in 96 have I seen a more blantatn attempt to win a game by taking a player out of it

Jimmy..... Wind yer neck in

Ulsterman. Brolly has since stated that donegal are are cynical as any team in the country. So clearly, he chose to not mention this before the all ireland final, and instead concentrate on mayo in what can only be assumed was an attempt to influence the game. I had no issue with him mentioning mayo, as long as everyone got the same treatment - that is just fair game as far as Im concerned.

That didnt occur.

The reality is, if spillane had chosen to highlight donegal's cynical tactics and not mayo's, ulsterman would still be spitting venom about it 11 months later.

Have to say thought Brolly's analysis has got progressively worse over the years and now follows Spillane's lazy analysis. In the last few years he's had his head up Tyrone's you know what and now that their no longer the strongest team he's shifted his praise to Donegal. His analysis last night was lazy in the extreme, no insight into the game whatsoever and when McStay tried pulling him on it he just shouted him down.

Whilst Tyrone's fouling at the end was cynical in the extreme, I fail to see how the black card would help. For instance, Cavanagh would have been shown a black card in the 70th minute, however under the black card rule by the time Tyrone would have got a sub on there would have been more stoppage therefore further playing into their hands!

Ulsterman, you really do think everyone is out to get Northern teams. Here's the reality:

Joe was right to pick Mayo out for cynical play last year before the All-Ireland, but ignored completely the fact Donegal are as bad as anyone (in my opinion). He also never had much to say, bar an odd faint mention, when Tyrone and Armagh had been doing this in the 00's. He points it out now because Tyrone have been replaced by Donegal as his darlings. If anyone smacked of hypocrisy it was him.

Cynical play = bad, wherever it comes from.

I'm not joe's biggest fan but he spoke the truth last night about Tyrone's more than usual cynical tactics in the dying minutes. What annoyed me however was his persisting and puerile grigging of "St Brigid's All-Ireland winning manager".

In my opinion, A Professional Foul, i.e Player running through and being pulled down stopping a goalscoring position should be a RED Card. The Black card will eradicate it a little but it will still happen if teams have subs remaining

Ok he might use a bit flowery language at times but Joe Brolly is right about things more often than not.The problem in Gaa as in other sports is that people find it impossible to be objective when it comes to their own county/team.People seem to take criticism of their county as almost a personal insult to them which is childish.I saw this in Wexford when Michael Duignan made very valid comments about Wexfords dirty play against Dublin. You would think he insulted every man, woman and child in the county the crap that was said about him.I was at the games yesterday and the reason Joe was so fortright about Tyrone and their cynical play was folks because Tyrone were cynical beyond belief yesterday.Ita cheating pure and simple!!
Now its time for a counter revolution..Im starting the Joe Brolly fan club:)

Henry Shefflin was sent off today for 2 fairly innocuous but ultimately cynical fouls. His 2nd yellow was a blatant drag down of a man in order to stop a Cork attack. Now, all I've heard is how Henry was hard done by, and the RTE pundits complaining about referees taking the physicality out of hurling.

Stevie O'Neill was (rightly) sent off for virtually the same thing, yet the reception has been completely the opposite. Double standards are at play here. The ex-hurlers seem to focus on promoting the positives in their game, while too many ex-footballers only seem interested in promoting themselves and their careers.

I'm hearing this lately, but I disagree. He might get it wrong less than Spillane does, but other than that he is no more accurate than any one else in my opinion. Also, his dislike for Kerry and trying to get under their skins the whole time has worn very thin. Criticise them by all means, but he blatantly tries to get the rise.
