Believe me I'm not taking anything from monaghans win totally deserved it and were better team on the day.
However I don't see them as all Ireland contenders just simply because they beat Donegal.
You say dibegal flat out of sorts but that's burying your head in the sand talk.I said to you all year what would happen when a team comes out of the blocks against Donegal and gets a lead of 4 or 5 points that donegals gameplan is not going to work as they are designed to hold and defend a lead and not designed to have to chase and outscore a team.
It was evident with 3 points only scored and 5 points behind with 20 odd minutes to go that they had to try something different to have a chance if winning and they didn't .

To be honest, I felt that their loss wasn't really a overall tactical issue. It was more so that 11 of their outfield players were off the pace and looked slow and tired looking. I felt at half time that Donegal were capable of raising their pace and Intensity levels sufficiently higher than what they were playing at.

Frank McGlynn and Neil Gallagher both played well, as did David Walsh during his brief appearance. The rest were poor enough, and specifically Ryan Bradley looked out of place on the team, and for his 3rd championship match he went down hill badly after the first 15mins or so. He hasn't played well this year for Donegal, and Leo McLoone has been lacklustre too.

I think Donegal could have come back from that score, had a few more of their players been firing on all cylinders. But they looked really jaded and complacent.
Unlike the previous 4 or 5 All Ireland winners, Donegal have a chance to redeem themselves. The others all exited from the All Ireland series the year after winning the All Ireland, and that meant no 2nd shot. Donegal exited the provincial championship, meaning they do have a 2nd shot at saving their All Ireland title.

Question now is can they take it? Laois are no pushover, and they know Donegal very very well.

Laois have made a habit out of getting knocked out early and getting goof run in qualify also been blessed witg six day turnaround for last two years, laois to upset the championship and get to quarters.

My comment referred to the supporters not the team. Fair dues to them for getting this far and I would love to see them getting further but generally they are poorly supported. I live in Laois and regularly hear comments like "I wouldn't cross the road to watch that crowd play".

As expected, Mark McHugh has been ruled out of the game. But even worse, he will also miss the Q/F if we make it. He suffered a perforated eardrum, concussion and a torn quad muscle so he'll be out for at least a month. Massive blow for us

Donegal are not the side the masses think , they have been built up as this machine where in actual fact we should of beaten them last year only for some ridiculous early errors.

Should have beaten them, a great Mayo expression.

They will be very hard pressed to get the win in Carrick and they'll not win another all Ireland for the forseeable future.

What is the foreseeable future, 50+ years?

2013 , is Mayos sam.

Hold the back and the front page everyone for the end of September, its official, Mayo are 2013 all ireland champions!!

Laois should just drop everyone behind the ball

I said last year that the way to beat Donegal is to play like them and win a low scoring game

If Dublin had of got past Mayo last year and dropped a shed load back and played a similar spoiling game, which was very possible under Gilroy... I think we could have put two AI's back to back

We def would have caused Donegal a lot more trouble than Mayo did in the end...

Dublin had the tactics to do it... Down and now Monaghan have proved that

Laois will follow suit...

"Mayo should have beaten Donegal last year.....".....ah yes his old chestnut thrown out again. Reality is 51longago, that Donegal had ye beaten out the gate after 10 minutes and were in cruise control after that and never had to get out of second gear. Denial is an awful affliction!

Massive loss but at least young Ryan will get more big game time. This year should bring him on leaps and bounds. Thought he filled in well for Mark on Sunday last.

Yeah Ryan is an exciting prospect but we have to be careful with him. He is about 2 years behind in physical development. But great to see another quality player make the step up all the same.

It goes farther than that jimbo, those tactics allied with a fanatical desire to win will cause anyone grief. All Monagahan did was do to Donegal what Donegal had been doing theselves. What they brought extra though was a fierce desire to succeed whic Donegal didn't have. Watching the scenes of delight afterwards brought it home to me that we would not have felt the same delight had we won. We felt it two years ago & to an extent last year but this year it wasn't there.
On the way up to the game my daughter asked me if I was nervous & to my surprise I had to say that I wasn't. That wee knot in the stomach that you should have on an Ulster final day wasn't there & the fact that I wasn't gutted at the end only reinforces the feeling that we were missing that one component that any team needs to succeed, burning desire.
If we get past Laois, a big if, I would like us to draw Dublin as I feel that that is the one pairing that would really kick start us. We have a lot of niggly injuries but the thought of playing the Dubs in Croke Park would be like a jolt of electricity. Things are just a bit flat here & the thought of the concrete warriors handing us our ar**s on a plate would be too much to bear & bring the best out of us.

Fully agree Muckross, was thinking the same myself. They just wanted it more than us. When you play that system and play it with that intensity and desire its very hard to beat. Which is why I feel Monaghan have a chance to go all the way this year if they maintain that hunger

I agree that Laois will follow suit. However It is worth noting that Tyrone did exactly that last year against Donegal, and Donegal came out on top. Granted it was possibly one of their tightest matches last season, well definitely their tightest in Ulster. But I basically don't think Dublin were any better equipped than Mayo, Cork or Kerry to beat Donegal last season.

Dublin were shakey last season and struggled against Meath and Laois before exiting to Mayo despite a very Impressive late rally. Donegal were on a similar path to Dublin this season, with the only difference being that they exited the championship at a stage where they get a 2nd shot. Something that predecessors Dublin, Cork, Kerry and Tyrone didn't have the year following their most recent All Ireland's.

Come Saturday evening at 7pm, Donegal may well be out of the championship. But If they manage to beat Laois and feel some hunger again, they could be a tricky quarter final for Mayo, Dublin or Kerry ( They can't face Monaghan ).
If they win their quarter final match too, then all bets are off.
