Even if the playing of OUR National Anthem is at times more Father Ted than celebrating our Fatherland or Motherland. It is the National Anthem, you can disrespect it in many ways, one of which is butchering it by a poor rendition. Secondly it should be played occassionally and sparingly as the occasion dictates. Not playing it because its "old fashioned" or might offend someone deserves two fingers or the middle the one. I'm sure this government if lobby'ed (in particular) would look very favourably on a change. It will probably necessitate a referendum but then we'd have to decide on a new one. Well may I suggest a doggrel that is totally inoffensive, incomprehemsible and yet is rich in Irish progressive thinking? Something like a passage from James Joyces Finnegans Wake..... That will keep the New and Old Irish happy.
1441522 it has to remain as it was one of the core values of the gaa to keep irish culture alive. amazingly ireland now faces the same challeneg with so much british and american influence through diferant mediums these days our culture is slowly dying out anything the gaa can do to keep it alive should be commended ------------------------------------------------------------ Well said man.
The playing of the anthem before every game actually reminds me of American culture and Baseball in particular where they belt out the star splangled banner every chance they get. I think soccer has it about right (cue gasps) - in England for example they only play the anthem on FA Cup final day - I think this is appropriate.
but we have a parade before our finals thus adds that extra special euphoria for the occasion. the anthem reminds us of what the gaa was set up for and encourages people to continue and irish tradition i dont see why that should be done away it.i do agree that it needs to be done by a band though as some singers are terrible.
