Katrina's looks can boost camogie

"the product of camogie is quite poor"

Ringo,

I would disagree strongly with that. It's the same as the product of hurling only played by women!!!

Fair enough, but the end product is poor!

Ringo, I dont know when you lsat went to a Camogie match but it has changed dramatically in the past 5 - 10 years. The skill level, fitness and competitive nature of the games is at a very high level. The age profile of the players has dropped a lot and I would say that camogie and ladies football are two of the fast growing sports in Irleand right now, though I will say that the fallout at U 16 / 18 is high, just like hurling and football. I go to a lot of Camogie matches and find them very entertaining.

Well said clubgaa. And it is not the GAA equivalent of beach volleyball. Sport is place where girls can get away from all the crap thrown at them about their body image by the media. Last thing they need is for it to be introduced into camogie. Anyway, Katrina is already a role model for her brilliant play on the field. She is not page 3 girl.

"Like it or not, the product of camogie is quite poor. It won't be filling stadia anytime soon."

Thats not the point of camogie, to fill stadia or tabloid pages and certainly not for the gratification of male "fans".

Most girls from U14 on who play the sport (and there are in total 100,000+ shocking that eh!) will put the hours into the betterment of their play. The fact as a result they will be toned, fit and mostly beautiful skilful athletes is just a by-product of playing such a skilful fast sport which they enjoy. And so what if some of their soon to be over weight peers think its a "bogger" sport we'll see whose laughing when they reach 20. Always entertaining even at the very young ages of 14, drop-out rates are very high because adult camogie starts at 16 which is ridiculous.

I might have been coming or going from club grounds when they've been on, but I've never made it my business to go to a camogie game, and I don't think I will anytime soon. I've tried to watch some of the All Ireland finals on TV - I'd stick about 5 or 10 mins at most. I've seen the highlights on the Sunday Game, and that's more than enough for me at the moment. The goalkeeping in particular makes a mockery out of the sport. I'm not trying to be nasty, but that's just my honest take on it.

Yeah, fair enough, participation is key. My whole take on it is that if more glamorous women are seen to be playing it, it might be more appealing to the ladies to play it and keep playing it. I've sisters myself who play sport, but wouldn't be caught dead playing camogie. When I was back in college it was the same thing - the other girls, many of whom played other sports like hockey, athletics and tennis, seemed to look down on the camogie girls. They might have a point - it seems a bit rough around the edges to me. Ladies Football would seem to have a better image even. This is the sort of thing which camogie needs to address if it is to progress.

Ringo,

The standard of skill, commitment & physicality in the All-Ireland camógie finals I've watched has been outstanding! Much better to watch than ladies football, the skorts they wear are also much easier on the eye than togs!!!

I would agree 100% with you here. My sister played camogie for Wexford for 8 years and the effort they put in is comparable to the effort by the male equivalent. It wasnt like that when she started. Cyril Farrell also said that Ursula Jacob's goal last year in the final was the goal of the year.

We're going in circles here. I'm not going to change my opinion that camogie isn't appealing to me to watch, others here seem to have links to the sport and contend that it is great to watch.

That aside, there is no doubt in my mind that camogie has an image problem. It isn't fashionable, it isn't glamorous, and a lot of girls wouldn't consider playing it for this reason.

If glamorous women can gain promotional contracts, just as male athletes do, it will most certainly raise the profile of the game, and appear more attractive to young women as something they might like to be a part of.

Sin é.

Think a lot of people are missing the point here no body is saying she should take her clothes off to promote the game.
All people are saying is that a pretty girl who plays camogie cannot be a bad thing to promote the game. I am sure that is all her mother is saying too.
The Rose of Tralee is a beauty competition for promotiing Tralee and Ireland, is that a bad thing too!

RTE covers some of the camógie championship (the final & scant highlights of 1 match per week) but I believe ladies football has benefitted way more through TG4's thorough coverage. Is fearr liom Ursula Jacob ná Cora Staunton gach lá!

Name five 'glamorous' hurlers. Even better, name five hurlers who have gotten promotional contracts based on their looks.

Nick, the Rose of Tralee is not a beauty contest as evident by previous winners. It's a talent competition, hence why Irish dancing, bad comedy, singing and other forms of entertainment will be viewed.Think Lovely Girls in Fr.Ted and multiple it by a thousand times worse.

Haha. What a load of nonsense. If the same thing had come from a man's mouth it would (rightly) be lambasted as patronising sexism. A lot more can be done to promote camogie than simply promoting a player who happens to be good looking.

nail on head.i think the effort of the camogie is now similar to hurling,ok it might not be 200mph but for all the remark of ringo above, there is 20-30 women in Wexford with 3 more All-Ireland medals each than the lads.

So its talent ye say, so Susan Boyle would fancy her chances would she.

More nauseating self righteous commentary on here sometimes than you would hear at a 'Pussy Riot' event. The mother can say her daughter is good looking if she wants.I don't think too many of yez were being 'outraged' when David Beckham or whoever else were making millions posing in underwear.

I think that its clear favouritism from the GAA towards Dublin to allow Katrina only wear those "short shorts" in Croke Park.

I think the southern media should be doing more to promote this countrywide. Short Denim shorts all around I say!!!
