Well 3feetoftimber, their point regarding handpassing is correct but you just had to look at the two games to see that teams overly reliant on hand-passing will win nothing. Mayo are proof of that. They do get men back in numbers, but they move the ball at pace when they have it and like Donegal, Dubs, Kerry are accurate with their foot-passing. Spillane may go on a bit but he is right about teams like Fermanagh. It is dreadful stuff and they only played well when they abandoned their 'game plan'. In fairness to Cavan, I think they are quite attractive to watch but still too inexperienced to master the sort of tactics they are facing from more negative teams so are prone to get dragged into dog fights. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 18/06/2013 10:02:39 1409569 Link 0 |

Whatever about spillane being negative [even though he was right about sundays game it was tripe] O rourke is certainly not negative and has some great ideas as to how the gaa should progress unfortunatley he would never go forward as an administrator. In fairness both of them called the cavan game as they seen it on sunday and that was pure dung and anyone who thinks any different knows nothing about football. O rourke is 100% correct even though spillane wouldnt agree with him when he said the provincial championships are the biggest drawback to the GAA at the moment In their present format they are out dated and finished. Their is only one final out of the four this year which is hard to call and even at that whoever loses between kerry and cork wont be unduly worried and could still possibly win the all ireland. johnsee (Meath) - Posts: 389 - 18/06/2013 10:50:41 1409611 Link 0 |
The Cavan Fermanagh match on Sunday wasnt a poor game.the first 25 minutes were poor (99% Femanaghs fault) the rest of the match was enjoyable. uibhfhaili1986 (Offaly) - Posts: 1296 - 18/06/2013 13:35:08 1409822 Link 0 |
I think Spillanes time is over at RTE. Its getting so predictable now that every week he will just use every opportunity for negative analysis of football in general before the panelists have to be reminded that there was some good play in the games!! We have to state facts that the games this year have been mis matches and therein lies the problem. If two division 3 or 4 teams are playing, no disrespect but the standard of play will be lower and when you get a div 1 team playing div 3 or 4 it will be a mis-macth. The best games we have seen this year was between Derry and Down (Derry Div 2 champs and Down relegated to Div 2 so on a par), Tyrone and Donegal (both Div 1 this year), Meath and Wicklow (both Div 3). The only problem with football these days is that Kerry are not winning all-irelands. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5522 - 18/06/2013 15:22:03 1409949 Link 0 |

Yeah I would not be Sweeney's biggest fan by a long way but that is an excellent piece. Other journalists wrote similar pieces after Spillane behaved exactly the same during the Longford/Wexford game last year and like then I doubt it will turn any heads in Montrose but it really really should. doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 27/06/2013 19:12:56 1417111 Link 0 |
