Newstalk Off The Ball

Well 3feetoftimber, their point regarding handpassing is correct but you just had to look at the two games to see that teams overly reliant on hand-passing will win nothing. Mayo are proof of that. They do get men back in numbers, but they move the ball at pace when they have it and like Donegal, Dubs, Kerry are accurate with their foot-passing. Spillane may go on a bit but he is right about teams like Fermanagh. It is dreadful stuff and they only played well when they abandoned their 'game plan'. In fairness to Cavan, I think they are quite attractive to watch but still too inexperienced to master the sort of tactics they are facing from more negative teams so are prone to get dragged into dog fights.

I think as a game someone needs to put the FOOT back in football. A lot of the frustration in watching the games at present is the lack of football in football. This was the main point made by Spillane and O'Rourke on the game at the weekend. They can be negative but surely the game needs to progress in the direction it was named.....FOOTBALL.

What about American Football? Very little use of the foot there? Should we organise a crusade to put the foot back in American FOOTball.

Don't even get me started on Basketball! What type of a basket has a hole in it?!!! Let's put the shopping back in the basketball!

Whatever about spillane being negative [even though he was right about sundays game it was tripe] O rourke is certainly not negative and has some great ideas as to how the gaa should progress unfortunatley he would never go forward as an administrator. In fairness both of them called the cavan game as they seen it on sunday and that was pure dung and anyone who thinks any different knows nothing about football. O rourke is 100% correct even though spillane wouldnt agree with him when he said the provincial championships are the biggest drawback to the GAA at the moment In their present format they are out dated and finished. Their is only one final out of the four this year which is hard to call and even at that whoever loses between kerry and cork wont be unduly worried and could still possibly win the all ireland.

The Cavan Fermanagh match on Sunday wasnt a poor game.the first 25 minutes were poor (99% Femanaghs fault) the rest of the match was enjoyable.

Why do people alway focus on the negative in Gaelic football.

I think Spillanes time is over at RTE. Its getting so predictable now that every week he will just use every opportunity for negative analysis of football in general before the panelists have to be reminded that there was some good play in the games!! We have to state facts that the games this year have been mis matches and therein lies the problem. If two division 3 or 4 teams are playing, no disrespect but the standard of play will be lower and when you get a div 1 team playing div 3 or 4 it will be a mis-macth. The best games we have seen this year was between Derry and Down (Derry Div 2 champs and Down relegated to Div 2 so on a par), Tyrone and Donegal (both Div 1 this year), Meath and Wicklow (both Div 3).
Spillane keeps harping on about the old days, in reality the football was poor but because he was involved and winning All Irelands he thought it was great. Ever since Tyrone knocked Kerry of their perch Spillane has had a problem with the evolution of gaelic football and has become a grumpy old man since, continually berating teams and managers yet leaving his beloved Kerry alone without criticism.
Its time RTE brought a new approach to punditry in general as their soccer counterparts are just as negative about everything. Bring on some new faces as full time panelists that know the modern game and will be more balanced and positive about the GAA cos this negativity is killing our game at present!!

The only problem with football these days is that Kerry are not winning all-irelands.

Yeah I would not be Sweeney's biggest fan by a long way but that is an excellent piece. Other journalists wrote similar pieces after Spillane behaved exactly the same during the Longford/Wexford game last year and like then I doubt it will turn any heads in Montrose but it really really should.
