Who would you like to see as a Sunday Game pundit?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With all the controversy with former players and managers criticising RTEs Sunday Game show, who would you like to see as a pundit to freshen things up a bit?

Personally I think Eamon O'Hara talks his mind, which I respect, but I am not fond of a certain regular on the punditry panel.

Anyway what new ex players or managers would you like to see on the program as part of the punditry panel?

I'd like to see Shane Curran as pundit. Very entertaining.

Ciaran McDonald from Mayo. Padraig Joyce from Galway. Martin O'Connell from Meath. Mattie Forde from Wexford. Declan Browne from Tipperary. Mickey Linden from Down. Colin Corkery from Cork.

RTE should be looking for all-time greats to be on their panel. The guys they get on, with a few exceptions like O'Rourke and Spillane, are not all-time greats. Martin Carney, McStay, Anthony Davis, Joe Brolly, these guys weren't all time great players or managers, far from it. So to listen to them lecture intercounty managers and players is ridiculous.

The hurling panel has things far better. Loughnane, Farrell, O'Grady were great managers. Eddie Brennan and Paul Flynn were great players. As a result there is none of the ridiculous, spiteful and embarrassing carry on the hurling panels. If I could add anyone to the hurling panel, I'd look at Joe Dooley from Offaly, Joe Cooney from Galway, Tommy Dunne from Tipperary, Tom Dempsey from Wexford is on the radio and is very good.

Shane Curran was on local Radio after the game yesterday.....very articulate and smart. You wouldn't think it when you looked at his on field antics. I would also like to see him on the Sunday Game as a quest.

But hand up who would like to see Kevin Walsh ? - they would have to leave O'Hara at home though...

If you watch Seo Sport on TG4 Darragh O'Cinneide even though acting as a presenter is actually a very good analyst.

I wouldnt necessarily look for a new panelist based on there football ability, but a man who has gone and won all Ireland's as a manager as a county team, someone like Jack O'Connor, I dont think je ever really played intercounty but yet he would no more about what it takes to manage a team than everyone else on that couch combined, and maybe he would have some respect for the players and especialy managers as he knows what its like. look at the three main panelists, Spillane ORourke and Brolly, never managed a county team and yet there on criticizing managers who have won all irelands, as if they know better, Spillane applied for the U21S kerry, he didnt even make it as far as the interview and Orourke applied for the Meath job, as poor as meath are by there own standards he didnt get it.

O'Cinneide is good alright. Peter Canavan is also very good, he does a far more respectable job of arguing the pros of the northern style than brolly, and ultimately does those teams far more justice. If he ever leaves management they should snap him up.

Pete McGrath, Peter McGinnity, Sean Boylan, Peter Canavan, Dara O'Cinneide, Paddy Heaney and Ricey (believe it or not he is a very good pundit, could see the RTE switchboard going into overdrive though! lol)
Thats off the top of my head, but there are many more who are worthy of a chance.

Get some who have done well in other sports who had a GAA background and still follow the games. Some current and past Aussie Rules players like Brian Stynes, Pearce Hanley or Tadhg Kennelly.Others like Shane Long, Padraig Harrington, Niall Quinn, Kevin Moran, David Gillick, Paul McGinley etc. I think they could give their perspective on refereeing, rule changes, professionalism, conditioning, psychology from professional sports people and it wouldn't do the Sunday Game's, sometimes, bickering auld lads image any harm.

I would get rid of the whole lot of them. As James Surwieki (excuse the spelling) said (or possibly paraphrased; "expertise is spectacularly narrow". We don't need these so called experts. I would change the format of the show. I would have Des/Michael presenting. Each week, they would invite one guest (a current coach or current player). Viewers would tweet and email the show prior/during the game and the guest would analyse aspects as dictated by the viewer. With this cost saving paying these 'experts' contracts, hopefully some more funds would be freed up to go and buy a few more cameras and we could also free up some time so that we can see more than 40 seconds of the Lory Meaghar cup final.

Dara O'Cinneide seems a cut above the rest, maybe just too sensible for RTE!

Thats really not a bad idea G & R, all the guys mentioned have done pretty damned well in their respective sports, it would be nice to have a new dimension on the GAA.
