The group stages in the champions league can be boring enough. Same for group stages at european or world cups. It's only in the knock-out rounds they get interesting. If you lose 2 group games you are likely to be knocked out. Lose two games in the championship currently and you are out. Is it really that much more exciting. If there's no seeding, have 4 top teams lumped into one group is hardly going to bring fairness either.
