What do we love about going to championship games?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

festinog - Oregon a bit closer to Galway weather though I bet.. Ah sure if ye send us into the qualifiers you can then plan to come home for Connacht final day but something tells me you may have been planning that last year after the Roscommon game ;)

Sat in the Hogan stand when it's a double header listening to three sets of fans (Dublin haters) shout and roar in vain as Berno bursts the net open to send the Hill in to rapture.

Has that scenario ever actually happened??!

40,000 Cork and Kerry fans in Killarney for a Munster championship match.
35 Cork and Kerry fans in Croke Park for an All-Ireland quarter final double header.
120,000 loyal Cork and Kerry fans scrambling for tickets for the All-Ireland final (if we get there).

Ill tell you what part of that statement is true , three sets of fans cheering on Dublin opposition , best iv ever seen is some fans maybe neutral , but ive witnessed guys from counties normally at loggerheads become soul brothers for an hour or so when facing the Blue .
When I asked my father in the early seventies Why ? With open eyes do other teams not like us ? He gave me great words of wisdom " because they dont "
Ive passed it on to my sons , get used to it , and Ill be honest I wouldnt have it any other way ,
I love going into Croker and At my age the Hill is a distant memory , Im normally knee deep in my country cousins in the Hogan/ cusack , and let the slagging begin , great craic .

The end of the Amhran na Bhfiann where you can feel the tension building and then finally once you hit the last sentence the whole crowd is roaring passionately for their county. That's when you know its Championship.

Buttock clenching, stomach churning, blood pressure rising, heartbeat pumping, finger nails biting and that's only asking the good lady wife for permission to go to the game. I love Summer Sundays but I love my Wife more .

Galway away is without doubt my favourite championship fixture. Headin for Salthill, into the Lions den for a battle with the auld enemy! On a nice day in May there's no better place to be than Salthill. The banter and rivalry is great craic. We like to pretend we hate each others guts, when in fact there is a healthy respect for each other (whether people on here want to admit it or not).

You old enough to remember the games in Tuam? Salthill isn't a patch on that great old venue and great football town Tuam is. Walk back into Galway city on Sunday it feel like no big game was played at all.

The_analyser - I agree - there is little or no atmosphere around Galway city on match day. I suppose its not really a GAA town, when you compare to Tuam, Castlebar, Roscommon

The_Analyser: Nail on the head; no buzz in the city center. Of course the size of the city has something to do with that, but I'd agree, in general Galway's not mush of a sport town.
