I was very dissappointed with Gaillimh. I'm all for giving managers 3 year contracts to build teams but there was no evidence from yesterday's game that anything positive was been done. I think the responsibilty for Gaillimh's display yesterday leis firmly at Mulholland's door. The backs didn't know what was going on or what they were meant to be doing. It was as if the team never played with each other before. I can see pressure mounting on Mulholland after that dire display. Its sad to see a great footballing county with great traditions in such a state.

Well that was a very impressive display by our lads despite Galway being the worst I have ever saw. I was worried going into this game as with our fre injuries and up and down league along with Galway winning the u-21 but I am glad to be proved wrong and before the ball was thrown in I felt confident ....why? Well the warm up's would you believe - Mayo warmed up in what looked like a Military drill - playing a mini game andf bouncing of each other while Galway done sprints across the field and took pot shots at the post.
Once the ball was thrown in Mayo were faster, fitter and looked physically more imposing than Galway. We have been creating many chances in front of goal lately and it was great to see us finish them this time around. Galway did gift us with some awful passing but the pressure Mayo put on the Galway backs was intense. Colm Boyle was my man of the match and Kevin McLoughlin was involved in everything up and down the field. Dillon also played well for a man who has been injured so long and Cillian O Connor.
I don't think too many Mayo fans will be getting carried away with the result due to the fact Galway were poor but at the same time you have to be happy with our display and many sterner tests lie ahead. Also I was delighted to see Andy get the goal - great lad and dedication to Mayo football.
It's not nice to see any team get a hammering and I would never gloat or make fun of hammering a team as we as a county only know too well how it feels so chin up Galway lads.
Now it's back to McHale Park where the rossies await us. Upwards and onwards as they say.

Well done Mayo.
Got the job done and completely battered us out the gate. Kept going and really showed us up.
We were a shambles. A shameful mess. Thank god it's 6 weeks or whatever it is until the backdoor. We really have to regroup - reassess and try to come up with a gameplan we can stick too. Coleman and Bradshaw - frustration and nastiness which we didn't need.
All we can do now is work like hell until the qualifiers and maybe upset a few in that. No-one is going to be fearing us at all and that may play into our hands.

Folks
Trying to come up with some sensible thoughts on yesterday as I was shocked that we won by so much. At best I was expecting us to win by 4-6 points. Us vs Galway are generally tight in may!
Firstly commiserations to Galway folk, its surely going to be a hard task for mulholland to lift the team after that beating.
As for us - I wouldn't get too carried away at the minute its too early in the year. Yesterday was no different than our hammering that we gave Leitrim last year.
Anyways My thoughts on our performance and generally
1.The ref was at best poor. Some strange decisions,I thought he blew the whistle a little too easy at times, but he was correct on the sendings off. Overall rating is that, Like the galway team he generally was poor from play.
2.As I suspected Mayo were physically superior all over the park and used that to boss the game on our terms. Obviously Donegal are the team to aspire to physically after last years consistant showings but IMO Horan has developed a young physically imposing team that has experience of consistantly mixing it at the top table of Football and being there or there abouts no matter who they play. They can also play a bit of ball when they want too. Mixed with our natural skillsets and capabilities. Risking sounding over confident but not meaning to this is honestly the first year that I wouldnt fear us playing anyone as we will be there or there abouts given our recent results and consistant showings.
3. The work rate throughout from 1-15 was in a different league to what Galway offered. They had to work 200% harder to get the ball beyond their half back line whilst we chose our forward route and more often than not got out with ease.
4.We had free men all over the park to use as and when we wanted. At times Galway stood off and gave our forwards acres of space to have a go which invariably went either over the bar or into the net. We have in the past few years been racked up massive scores by kicking points from anywhere inside the 45. Dont know what Galway backs were thinking giving us that much space. That being said the forward movement was generally good so this probably acted as the extra man for us when making our space.
5. Good to see us put up a big score and prove the pundits wrong. Collectively as a unit our forwards worked well and appear to be a little stronger than last year. This will carry us forward again for the year but against the so called bigger teams/Favs for sam my only fear is that we may lack one forward who will turn the game around with a moment of genius and rattle the net when needed - A La Gooch/Declan o Sullivan or Stephen o Neill. I hope im made eat my words after saying this but the next few months will see how much we have progressed since last year from numbers 10-15.
6. Great to see Andy Moran back again and im delighted to see him get on the score sheet.Hopefully his form continues from where he left off before that horrible injury last year.He has spent some time in the gym too. Mabye the camera adds the pounds as they say but Visibly I thought he was bigger than last year in upper body. When he gets fully fit with gametime under his belt not many backs in the country would fancy going up against him for a one on one ball.
7. As the saying goes 'beat who is put in front of you and take it one game at a time'.
8. Galway have to regroup and have a think on how to progress. Given their recent U-21 Successes I think they will in the next 4-5 years be a force to reckon with again. They have some exciting players coming through but nowhere near fit physically or mentally to mix it at senior level just yet.
Overall the team is there, the promise is there. Hopefully this year is the time that it all clicks and comes together! Maigh Eo Abu!

If I was a Galway fan that is what I would be most upset about. What happened in the first half can happen. You go up against a team playing a division up from you, you aren't fully tuned in and make some bad mistakes and find yourself beaten at half time. That can happen to a young side in Galway's position. It was up to Bradshaw, Coleman, Meehan, the more experienced guys to say at half time let's take our medicine, limit the damage and get out of here with a second half performance we can build on for the qualifiers. Instead Coleman and Bradshaw hit the self destruct button. Madness.

Agree pretty much with everything yew tree said except 1) I was more wary of Galway, I thought we might have been set up for an ambush and am delighted to have been proved wrong. 2) I was watching the warm up too but I thought it was lacking in intensity, I remember noting the contrast between Donegal and Mayos warm up before the All Ire last Sept and felt that was one reason for the slow start then. The game wasnt helped by Galways indiscipline, we could have done with a sterner test. Not sure what JH will have learned from the second half. Still a big congrats to all concerned.

Emphatic performance yesterday by Mayo, but it has to be said, it wasn't that they were that good, it was that Galway were that bad. No game plan, no spirit or heart, players not interested, giving the ball away in your own half through carelessness, they were awful.

Galway will play much better after yesterday. Most of their downfall was due to the inability of their backs to move ball out of their 45. A hell of a lot of Mayo's scores (at least 2-5) came directly from Galway backs being hounded in possession, losing the ball and Mayo scoring. The Galway backs were lacking movement off the ball, poor passing skills and the Mayo forwards worked really hard.
However, this is something Galway can easily get right. They need to change one or two defenders, work on their ball movement, and their half forward line need to seriously up their work rate to provide their defenders with an out ball.
Likewise for Mayo, I wouldn't get carried away with this win. If at least 2-5 of Mayo's scores came from Galway players easily turning over ball, it suggests that Mayo didn't actually create that many of their own scores- scores where the Mayo team had to work the ball from their own backline up the pitch.
I wouldn't fear for Galway at all after this. Any team with 3 forwards like Meehan, Armstrong and Conroy will always have a good chance. Their defenders really need to improve their ball control and workrate though.

Icehonesty you wouldn't fear for Galway is this a joke??? I would fear for Galway there going nowhere fast this year , there backs are terrible there midfield was poor yesterday but I rate the U 21 lad just a bad day at the office for a young lad that can happen, there forwards were poor , Armstrong has never done it for Galway in championship football and you can't expect Meehan to still be as good as he was with all the injuries he's had.

icehonesty,
what about galways two midfielders who got red cards yesterday. How will they cope without them for their next game. There was a gulf in class and fitness, division 1 vs. division 2, massive difference.

I agree roundball. When you consider bradshaw was actually the captain for the day, it reflects badly. To the galway lads I would say very hard luck, and then really get behind your team in the qualifiers, what have you got to lose? Offer them some support now when they need it most and with a bit of luck with the draw they could get up and running and do themselves justice. These guys are not bad footballers and as bad as the fans must be feeling, you can only imagine how the team are feeling today. There was lads around me yesterday shouting about some pride in the galway jersey, and they were right, but people should also remember that works both ways, and as fans they have a job to do also.

What a great win for Mayo
Galway were quite poor but you can only beat what's put in front of you and Mayo were very clinical
I said a few months back that Mayo were the best team that I've seen Dublin play in 2013
In the first Croke Park game Mayo were moving very well at times... and I could see that they were going to be v good come the summer
With vital players now starting to filter back into the team... it all looks good for Mayo claiming 3 Connacht titles in a row
There will be tougher tests but Mayo deserves great credit and they have now set the pace...
Could 2013 be the year.... I don't see why not.
They are in with a big shout and are capable of beating anyone... they'll fear no one.
Just need to get their heads straight…

Good post Master, these young Galway lads got a rude awakening yesterday as to the difference between U21 & Senior Championship. It wasn't their fault however, they were let down by their senior colleagues who didn't provide the leadership. Now is the time for Galway GAA folk to get behind them.
As for Mayo, I thought they were great yesterday & seem to have added a few strings to their bow. I may well be mistaken, but I saw some distinctly Donegal like crowding & pressing from them when they didn't have the ball which bodes well for them. I wouldn't like to call it a "system" as such, since only Donegal & Tyrone would use such terrible tactics, but whatever it was it chewed Galway up & left them all over the place.

Well done Mayo. All you can do is beat the team before you and that ye did well . Galway have no plan , no system , no style , no commitment and no cuteness . Looked like they all met for the first time in the car park before the game . What a disaster !
