Why not have 10 teams playing 6 games in 1 league table ?
League table positions are not as critical when a muti-team knockout decides the league.
Accordingly, a partial round robin should suffice where everyone gets a fair sprinkling of competitive games.
For knockout, why not have 1v6, 2v5 and 3v4, with highest placed winner getting a bye to the Final.

you make a very valid point regarding the non-hurling counties voting for things they have no interest in nor does it effect them.it's a hard one to know what is best to do with that situation but to be fair, any county not competing in the league should not have a voice,or else below division 1B it should be the managers of the teams who are consulted, because ultimately they are the ones who care in those counties.

Yeah, its a bit discouraging when you realise that any system of benefit to hurling in all counties will probably be voted down because of who's voting. I still think all counties should have an equal vote, but its the people who are voting thats the issue. I think you've a good point about the managers of the teams being consulted. Maybe though, if every county had seperate football and hurling boards, it might offer a solution. Then delegates from football boards could vote on football structures and rules, and delegates from hurling boards could vote on hurling structures and rules.

Marlon_JD that is the perfect solution but can you see football county boards giving hurling board any sort of power in any county?i cant!i know some people from longford and sligo and down who are real hurling people and they despair at the people who are sent to meetings etc on hurling.most of these people dont want hurling to prosper in these counties, and that is a real pity.

How about giving counties a weighted vote count - Say the McCarthy Munster 5 + Leinster 5 get three votes each; the Qualifying 5 get two; and the others 1 each (or any other reasonable vote weighting method)

Omahant, there's no place for a complex structure in a league that is about preparation for the championship. You mentioned somewhere that Australian rules have a good play-off system. It's where the top 1-4 are in a round where the two winners go to semi-finals and the losers to quarter-finals. Teams 5-8 are in a round where the two winners go to the quarter-finals and the two losers are out. Tyrone and Dublin wanted that in the football championship. They wanted the 4 provincial champions in a champions round with the winners going on to the semi-finals and the loser to the quarter-finals. They'd have had the 4 qualifier round 4 winners playing off in a 5th qualifying round with only two qualifiers making the quarter-finals. I thought that was a fair enough shout and would be a great incentive for winning a province. Dublin and Tyrone didn't get much support in congress for their desired format. If they can't get a system like that in, you'll never in a million years see any of your complex formats making the cut. It's fair enough australian rules league stage and the american football have certain league systems but they've no place in the hurling league. Just the way it is lad. Try and enjoy the games. If you ever hope to see a format come into play, it'll have to be straight forward e.g. divisions of 8 where everyone knows the story.

I think Anthony gets it spot on here, divisions of 8, 2 up 2 down. I also agree with what he says regarding the introduction of quarter finals next year, its a ridiculous move.

Even though I enjoyed the league moreso these last 2 seasons in its current format, I have to agree with everything Daly says there.

I think it was always going to be hard to get them 100% motivated for today.

The aim for Dublin was to get promotion, job done!!

disagree if promotion to division one is all that can be achieved considering we won the league only two years ago it shows how far backwards we have gone since that all ireland semi final were we pushed tipp all the way.daly should have been let go after last years championship and we should have started to rebuild under a new manager preferably shay boland who would have been blooding new players where as dalys whole regime has gone stale and his initial hoo la baloo is long gone.hes not getting the best out of his players players like keeney, mccafrey and o callaghan look a pale shadow of their former selfs

Cats v Tipp in the league final. Tipp will have revenge on their mind after that infamous day of "aug 19" of last year. Tipp should be slight favourite going in but don't know what they will be coming out.
