Is Kilkenny football dead?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know Kilkenny is a hurling county but where is their football team? It's all football here in Tyrone but at least we have a hurling team that are 5th in Div 3A but there's no Kilkenny football team anywhere to be found. What's the story Kilkenny?

Was it ever alive?

I read a piece recently from Joe Brolly. Like a lot of Brolly's tales you might need to digest it with a pinch of salt but it's a good one nonetheless.
Apparently once upon a time the Kilkenny footballers were traveling to an away league game short on numbers. Before they left the county boundaries they happened to come upon the legend DJ Carey along the road. They asked him if he fancied coming along and togging out. Supposedly the hurling wizard managed 5 points from play!

Kilkenny football is not dead, it's just being ignored, where as Carlow football appears to be dead, but is not being ignored, - - - - I hope I'm wrong.

There senior inter-county football team withdrew from Division 4 of the NFL this year - they were getting hammered every game.

I think they now only compete in the AI Junior championship.

Kilkenny could have the same gripe with about 20 counties in ireland who only pay lip service to hurling.

I'd bet that the Kilkenny hurlers would beat the Tyrone hurlers by a greater margin than the Tyrone footballers would beat the Kilkenny footballers!

Thats probably true (That Kilkenny hurlers would beat Tyrone hurlers by a greater margain than Tyrones footballers beating Kilkennys footballers) , Reason for that is you need two teams to play a game. Kilkenny don't have a senior football team.

Kilkenny entered their senior footballers in the Leinster JFC last year.

They still make some effort though. A few weeks ago only one person turned up for training with the Kilkenny minor team and there was a quote from someone involved with the team who said clubs activity encourage players not to play football so that show the Kilkenny theory of ''theres no interest'' its easy for there to be no interest when players dont have a choice in the matter

I figured it wouldn't be long before that nonsense argument came up again. It should be fairly obvious that you can't compare scores between the two codes. The very nature of hurling and the higher scoring in the game means that any difference in quality between teams will be hugely magnified on the scoreboard. Goals are more common and if you get space aroung the middle of the pitch you can knock over scores from 70-80 yards. In hurling you can have two evenly matched teams and one could still win by 7 or 8 points in the end. In football that would be a bad beating. Look at Waterford in the All-Ireland final a few years back beaten by 20+ points. Because scores are harder to come by in football, that that would never happen in a football final.

I know that the standards of hurling in Tyrone and many other counties are not very high, and that county boards pay lip service to the game at best. But at least there are some die-hard hurling people in those counties who make sure that the game is kept alive and their counties are represented in the leagues, even if it at a low level. The same sadly cannot be said for football in Kilkenny. The interest is just not there. We should probably just accept that and let them get on with the hurling rather than bring up this topic every so often when people feel like having a pop at some other county.

Good point about the die hard hurling people in the weaker counties. I have a few friends in meath who are fine hurlers adn would get on many teams down here in Limerick. They also support your football teams but unfortunately the football supporters rarely come out for them. But popularity is everything. marketting for any sport is vital.

Yes, Kilkenny football died a long time ago and the hurling contingent much bare some responsibility along with the schoolteachers across the county who have so much influence in moulding the minds of children from as early age.

It's safer not putting forward a team if there's going to be results similar to the past few years.
