The country cant afford this. Nothing to do with other sports. If it was the euros in soccer id say the exact same. Be great to have these things held here. the PR would be invaluable to the country but we have to think with our heads and not our hearts. Thats what has us in this current mess. We just cannot affford this tournament. Simple.

Exactly. It'd be great to be able to stage something like this, but if we're being realistic, its not economically feasible. I think there's always an intial excitement when these things are floated, and people tend to forget reality and get a bit carried away. But as time passes and people think about it more clearly, or are at least reminded about the economic quicksand we're in, I think the general population will recognise that its not worth tanking our economy for, again. I hope.

The well timed funding for the development of 3 x large Stadiums in Belfast suggests that the British government (Via the Northern Executive ) are likely in favour of a All Ireland RWC bid.

Ireland could have realistically hosted a Rugby World cup, had the country not been sunk by greedy developers, Bankers, Politicians and Bureaucrats. Now there is the small matter of £65 Billion in banking debt, not Including the existing Sovereign debt.
The average ordinary person is getting crusified with taxes by our publicly elected representatives on the orders of their Troika masters.

Ormond, would you take the rugby blinkers off for just a moment and see how much this country cant afford to be hosting events like this. Far more important things to be taken care off like health, infastructure, education, services, etc. Whatever a few exceutives in the IRFU think doesnt mean you have to go along with it to the letter. You shout down anyone with a opinion different to yours. Look at the cold hard facts of the matter at hand. There is enough empty hotels around the country at the moment without more being built. Have you thought about infastructure to move these fans about? London had all this in place for the olympics and still just about got by. Security is another issue. You cant expect a broke country to be picking up the tab for all this just so a 6 week tournament can take place. Think with your head and not what the Irish Times tells you. Would be great to be able to host these things but we as a country have to be realistic in its goals and decisions on what it spends its monies on for the next 20 years.

Advantages...The Gaa will be able to show off our stadia to the world(or at least the rugger world as the majority of the planet doesnt give a damm about rugger)while getting paid well for it.
Disadvantages...The country will be infested with toffs for a few weeks.
