GAA key to Rugby World Cup bid

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has given his support to hosting the 2023 Rugby World Cup in Ireland. But the most crucial factor will be the permission from the GAA to use its stadiums around the country - and not just Croke Park - for rugby matches. The GAA is due to vote on a motion to allow this to happen at its annual Congress in Derry at the end of this month. It would mean that public funds could be used to upgrade the media and corporate facilities at famous GAA venues such as Semple Stadium in Thurles and Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork.

What do people think? Good idea or bad? It was one thing allowing Croke Park to be used whilst the Aviva was being built, but this is a much bigger step. Would we be shooting ourselves in the foot in the long term with the promotion of foreign games? Would the short term financial gain be worth it?

I think its a great idea. Who wouldnt want to see such a tournament brought to Ireland?

I'm sure it would provide a financial boost to the GAA and the country as a whole. If it does be approved then hopefully some stadiums around the country might be upgraded and give some constrution workers in the country a bit more work.

Provided the grounds are just for use during the potential hosting of the World Cup and not at any other time, then yes it should be backed. The GAA will benefit hugely from it, with the development of grounds as well as the financial gains.

Of course it's worth it, especially now there will be 4 Dublins, they'll need money from anything they can get now : D

All jokes aside, I love showing Croker off to the world, and I also love rugby, so lets be having you egg-chasers!

It would be great. It will also be held in September/October when our intercounty championships are finished. A few club games may be disrupted. It would not be an issue in Cork anyway as we have plenty of other grounds.I can see no losers in this. i hope we get it.

I'd be in favour hosting the Rugby World Cup, and the GAA allowing the use of their grounds so the IRFU have the required amount of Stadia needed.
However I would prefer if they maybe spread the love ( Cash ) a bit more though.

I felt that Derry City was badly overlooked as a possible venue considering it is the 4th Largest City on this Island after Dublin, Belfast and Cork. A Rugby World Cup event would be a great oppurtunity to show off Ireland as a whole, a Derry City venue would cover the greater North West area.

Also Kilkenny City would be a stunning location to stage a group/pool match. Killarney would be a stunning backdrop for a game also.

In 2011 New Zealand used 12 stadiums.
What would Irelands 10-12 be??

Aviva
Thomond
RDS
Ravenhill
Sportsground (Galway)
Croke Park
Semple Stadium
Pairc Ui Chaoimh
One new stadium?
Casement park?
Clones?
Parnell?
Pearse Stadium?
Gaelic grounds (Limerick)?
O' Moore Park?
Donnybrook?
Musgrave Park?

Aviva, Croker, RDS, PUC, Musgrave Pk, Casement Pk, Ravenhill, Thomond Pk, Gaelic Grounds, Pearse Park, Sportsgrounds, Killarney.

Now often it is the case that smaller cities will only get one stadium so if that happens Limerick might only have TP, Galway might only use Sportsgrounds etc
If that were to happen you could see Nolan Park, Tullamore, Clones or Portlaoise come into it also.

Derry City should be a prime location for a stadium, with City of Derry airport and the Rail link to Belfast. Celtic Park in Derry City was redeveloped in recent times and can currently hold approx 20,000+ people.

Currently we have a case where the majority of Ulster is overlooked, with the following counties having no Stadiums in line for usage.
Derry, Donegal, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Cavan, Down, Armagh, Monaghan, Sligo, Louth, Leitrim, Meath.

If you were to highlight those counties on a map, and then highlight were there will be stadiums, it would kinda look like a huge void running from the midland into the North/Northwest.

McHale Park would be well able to host a WWC game Id imagine.

McHale park is the biggest all-seater we have after the Aviva. It would surely be one of the GAA grounds put forward.

I'd be all for it.

It'd be some thing for Ireland to actually host a World event like the RWC. It'd be a huge boost for the economy and massive exposure for the country. It would benefit all so I'm sure the GAA would be more than willing for a few grounds to be used.

Musgrave Park, the Sportsground or RDS are either not suitable or too small (unless they get redeveloped). The following grounds have been redveloped over the last few years and are modern and safe:

Tullamore
Pearse Park, Galway
Athletic Grounds,
Healy Park
Celtic Park
PortLaoise

These would be good stadiums for smaller group games (Canada v Tonga, Italy v Japan etc) and great injection into the local economy...

Good idea.
More than short term financial gain for just the GAA.
One of the biggest sporting tournaments in the world would be played in Ireland so benefits in additional tourists here which benefits everyone.
More finance would prob be available to redevelop some existing stadiums that really need a facelift and could finally be brought into this century

Would Nowlan Park be big enough and would a revelopment tp make it bigger be cost effective as after the tournament would the "new nowlan park" be used enough to justify the cost of doing it up?
Same with a stadium in Derry.

Croke Park, Aviva fine for everything from accomodation to facilities etc near to stadiums. Same with Thomond, RDS, Ravenhill.
Sportsground in Galwey would need to be bigger
Semple Stadium and Pairc ui Chaoimh would need a bit of a facelift and Thurles doesnt have enough accomodation nearby to cope with a rugby world cup game say between england and new zealand or italy and australia. That would be a real issue with Semple being used.
Same with Clones. Would there be enough accomidation nearby for thousands of travelling supporters?
Donnybrook way to small except for the very smallest games involving 2 minnow nation
No need for Parnell Park if Dublin already had the Aviva, Croker, RDS being used.

No point in using Pearse stadium, Portloaise etc even though theyre bigger than RDS, Musgrave, Sportsground as their is much more chance of getting a decent crowd into canada v tonga etc in a stadium of 20000 or so like the RDS than a 30000 stadium like Pearse Stadium,

Which are the best stadiums, infrastructure, facilities, etc then unfortunately we have few:
Leinster
1. Croke Park - obviously
2. Nowlan Park

Ulster
1. Newry
2. Omagh
3. Armagh

(Casement Park - if it is completed)

Connacht ???

Munster - Killarney - possibly

I'm not being biased but Paric Caoimh in Cork is really dated, dangerous with very poor facilities,
Castlebar is equally poorly equiped,
Maybe I'm biased but please come to Armagh-its a lovely ground -well finished (finished) with tolilet facilities for all, unlike Portlaise, Navan, Cavan ( which is hosting the Aussie Rules test - joke of a venue,

So
1. Croke Park
2. Aviva
3. Casement Park
4. Ravenhill
5Thomand Park
6. RDS
7. Galway or Mayo
8. Kilarney
9. Derry
10. Tullamore
11. Cork
12 Armagh

McHale Park is a fine Stadium, and would be worthy of hosting such an event.

I suggested Celtic Park as a potential venue, as it's located near the City Centre of Ireland's 4th largest City. With limited further development it could be expanded easily over 30,000.

It would be great to spread these matches out across the country.
