Attendances 2013

Im ignorant when it comes to Summer fans. I hate the idea of the game on Saturday only having 33,000 at it, And yet if Dublin make it to the august bank holiday weekend the difference in the amount of fans" at the game is unreal. Likewise I love how all the Donegal fans appeared from the woodwork when they got to Croke park for the semi v Dublin in 2011 and the semi and final in 2012.

This whole Croke Park thing is turning into a joke.

Both games last weekend could have been played "down the country" & you would have had a real atmosphere in the ground, a benefit to the local economies not to mention a better match in the Dublin Westmeath game. It's all very well saying that there were 33,000 in Croke Park last weekend but since most Dubs arrived for their game there was no more than 15,000 there for the first game & with people leaving, no more than 25,000 there for the second game which is ridiculous.

The atmosphere in Ballybofey last weekend was electric with a crowd of 17,500, the same applied to the National Hurling League final which attracted a crowd of around 20,000 to Nolan Park. Croke Park is simply not suitable for games that can't attract a crowd of less than 40,000.

why do people think some attendance are low? what else besides the price of going to the game and the recession have an affect on it?

I think the main reasons are the ones you said. Personally ive been impressed with Mayo support, it has gained a bit of momentum the last 12 months or so.

Id estimate around 20k for the upcomin connacht semi final v Roscommon. That is a satisfactory crowd.

Some counties just have really bad support, Cork are a prime example, thats not goin to change anytime soon either. Dublin have lost the most since the Celtic cub, i cant explain that tbh other than maybe they had a lot of bandwagon fans during the good times.
Galway dont have a great football following either. Kildare used to bring a lot more to croker too. Roscommon have a mighty following

I agree with you too Muckross,
I know most genuine Dubs, myself included would love going down to provincial grounds for Leinster quarter and semi finals games. When I was old enough to head to games in the late 80's early 90's and heading down to Tullamore/Portlaoise/Navan/Wexford Park etc were brilliant days out and was at a time in early to mid 90's when Dublin were competing in All Ireland finals and the provincial quarters and semis could easily have filled Croker but were played in the smaller provincial grounds which was the right call in my view, packed to the rafters and a brilliant atmosphere from both sets of supporters etc. I think they should be played in smaller grounds and then up to Croker for the final.

Dublin v westmeath should have been in portlaois ,it would have had brilliant atmosphere and good craic with a full house,I agree with ye WaynoI
there nothing more annoying watching parts of croker empty for first match of championship and then later on in championship youll have the ones crying that they never miss a match looking for tickets. but every county is the same. Definetly think as regards first round matches and depending on opposition semi final matches they should be outside croker, obviously Dublin v Kildare should be in croker ,but if it wasnt kildare or meath in semi they should look at playing it outside croker, it wont happen because of deals and contracts signed with individuals and boxes sold on cetain conditions.

Equally am not having a go at you and i often think the Dubs support or lack of at times is wrongly criticised as population is not a clear yardstick to use as a guide of support. However in our case there are mitigating facts that people outside the county would not necessarily be aware of.

i agree i just find it hypocritical when he launches an attack on me thats all

i dont agree it needs a certain amount for an atmosphere thats rubbish,i have been at near full houses and no atmosphere yet was at league games with 20 or 25 thousand and had great atmospheres.
the problem was having it on a saturday night, then a real problem is a bank holiday weekend saturday night when dublin airport had its second busiest day of the year, blooms festival had 250 thousand people at it and half of the country goes on a weekend break for a couple days.now rightly so as a satruday night is awful for any county to travel to croke park so it meant supporters from the other 3 were very low.
i cannot see why today bank holiday monday the game was not played instead!!!
you would have more then likely got 50 thousand on a bank holiday monday just like the august bank holiday monday attracts huge numbers.
dublin used always play first round on june bank holiday monday in navan in front of a full house.

a massive thing is the live tv and predictable results.
every dublin match s live on tv,there was no need to have that match on saturday night live if we are being honest.
also the fact that most people expect cork and kerry to get straight through to munster final then you will see them turn out.
the same as myo supporters will expect to win connaught now easy and the same with dublin supporters most expected to win and were saving there money for kildare match in semi final

said it when the draw was made portlaoise would have been the perfect chance to test out having agame in first round outside croker, problem being portlaoise capacity apparently got cut to 20 thousand.until leinster has a a stadium outside croker that can hold 30 thousand the gaa wont make it happen as it causes logistical problems apparently.its pity navan is not renovated to its old 30 thousand capacity or porlaoise

live tv is needed, no live =less of an audience=less of interest=less money from sponors

Oh yeh I know every county is the same.. I have an ignorance towards all summer fans, I cant stand these muppets who don't go to a gave all year yet will go and support their "county" soon as they get to a semi final or final.. Its a disgrace.

yeah thats fine but showing one sided games like kerry v tipp, dublin v westmeath doesnt encourage people to go and watch their county play these games,it gives them the option to save their money for bigger games and watch it at home
