It was the GAA who are unwilling to share facilities and because of their political power base they have always been able to get get the goverment funding which is very disproportionate to their participations rates . Once GAA players take any money they no longer are amateurs ,

So if an amatuer athelete gets money, through grant or whatever source, are they no long amatuer?

Sure what do these athletes need money for? I can open me front door and run around the block it won't cost me a penny....I don't even have to buy a football.... talk about prima donnas!

The difference is that our kayakers, sailors, athletes etc are doing it on a world stage.

Ask most people around the globe if they know who Sonia O'Sullivan, Eamon Coghlan etc are and they'll all be able to tell you....ask them who Henry Shefflin or Karl Lacey are and you'll get a blank response....

Dont make me laugh..... Tis surely some of the potters on here that need a serious dose of realisation as to who lives in a cloistered world to be sure to be sure!

Eamon Coughlan and Sonia O sullivan received more than €400 a year in funding.
I don't get your point. I would say that there are more people in America or Australia that have heard of Henry shefflin than could name the Irish Kayaking team.
Neither do I get the Twee Irish reference at the end. Are you trying to convey some broad cosmopolitan wordly wise experience.

If the couple of million people who follow Gaelic games are Irish or Irish Emmigrants or Second generation Irish do they not count ?

Yours

Rubbish. The GAA opened Croke Park when it was needed. They have indicated their willingess to make their stadia available for Irelands future bid for the Rugby World Cup. The GAA is about a lot more than participation. It is the countrys foremost community organisation. It provides the focal point of most country parishes. It is essentially the life blood of huge swathes of this country. The hurlng and football championships are projected to generate 600m euro approx for the economy over the next three years. Compared to that 900k is a pittance. It's not a payment by the way it's a grant. As for James Camneys stupid comments The GAA does fill peoples heads with silly ideas rather it fills peoples hearts and minds with excitement.

That's your definition of amateur and you are more than entitled to your opinion. What is being disbursed is a grant to aid training. Katy Taylor receives 40,000 euro per annum. She is classified as amateur. By your definition she is not amateur and The IOC are incorrect in allowing her to box at The Olympics. Should she return her medal ?

Gaa players are geting on average 10 euro a week(yes folks a tenner!)It hardly makes them pros does it?It is also much better value to the country than some of the grants given to supposed elite athletes who turn out to be anything but elite.

haha so the gaa pay and build the stadiums and then say to other sports come on in and play haha you really know your stuff, sure while the aviva was being built we heard nothing but moaning and complaining from the rugby public about how much they were being charge to rent croker.
they are taking tax reliefs of 400euro they spend more then that on days off work for matches or petrol costs hardly amounts to katie taylors bill at all.

The act of running is not itself a sport, but if you are running in some form of organised or structured competition to see who wins, then it becomes a sport.

It becomes a sport because of the technical, physical, mental and competitive dynamics it entails. If somebody wakes up early to go for a jog, it's not a sport. If somebody enters a "running race" and there's a competitive edge, then it is a sport.

Obviously I'd agree though that recreational running wouldn't be classified as a sport. Probably one of the biggest sort of myths / trepidations non sporting people have when joining a gym or trying to get fit.

That hill16n1man is as ignorant a statement as that of Kiernan. Track and field requires a level of fitness, commitment and mental strength that few sports, barring tennis, can match.

Fitness Instruction 101: Running isn't a sport.

Chamney's contention speaking from sun drenched Sporting rich Spain (but bankrupt Spain) "There's no GAA in Spain to fill people's head with foolish ideas" what foolish idea's do the GAA feed? Its his sport that is total pathetic, it is toxic and devoid of morality. It is he and his like that walk around with their heads full of foolish idea's - their own deluded expensive ones, he should get a begging bowl like the rest of us.

The GAA relies on massive volunteering to survive and to fundraise. Every damn juvenile team the lenght and breath of the country don't get hand-outs they GRAFT for it. And then then we who contribute have to listen to this offensive tripe from another crop of no-hoper Irish athletes. Grafting is not something this professional freeloader and his athletic croonies would dream of doing. Go away money won't make you and your like run faster!!
This state as a nation is on its last uppers so we should indulge a bunch of no-hope'ers full of pipe dreams? I say screw them no funding, give it to schools and athletic clubs - let these chancer's and annual failures get out there and sell their dream, if they can find any eejit willing to invest in it so be it.

The irish archery team don't need to worry about €400 grants. They have done a €100m deal with Nike.
To quote you earlier post "global stage".

i agree yes its a competition when racing against somebody in a skill set regarding sports you would have to agree you do not need a sporting brain to take up running or compete in the marathon.yes i also agree its exactly what you teach people that fitness does not mean you have to be sporty.
haha and no i have ncehs qulaifications
