1316161 Cute_Kerry_Hoor - cheers for the info. I know from pictures of the 1951 Mayo winning team that they wore white - representing Connacht. I dont know if this was a once off or if other counties wore their provincial colours in the past once they got out of Connacht, Munster etc.
No worries. Just on 1951 and Mayo wearing white in Croke Park, it was possibly due to colour clashes with Kerry in the Semi-Final and Meath in the Final. Just a guess though.

Well on my old thread entitled 'Stories, history, myth, legend from your area' I outlined the famous Lucan story to you all of how the 'Lillywhites' got their jerseys from us! And also how Limerick opted to go with their county colous replicating the colours of the 'home' club of Lucan native Paddy Sarsfield who was the hero of Limerick in 1691!
Also, Lucan Sarsfields adopted black shorts instead of white and black/green/white striped socks to go along with the famous green and white jerseys back in the 90's but there is no romantic stories behind it of a 'black sock getting in with the white shorts' in the wash of anything it was pruely because we are such dapper dressers and stylish individuals and collectively too here in Lucan that it was reckoned the black just 'looked better' and adopted it with no fuss!....We always 'look well' here in Lucan and thats for sure!

Kerry got their colours from a village in Waterford called Kilrossanty. I think some time in the 1900's they travelled to Dungarvan to play in a tournament, but forgot to bring their jerseys. Nearby Kilrossanty lent them a set of their own kit which is the green and gold which you see today. Kerry played so well that they decided to keep the colours from then on.
Waterford's shorts were changed from white to blue following a suggestion from Justin McCarthy that the all white kit wasn't intimidating enough. They went with blue for about 10 years, but changed back to white last year I think.

If yous concentrated a little more on hurling and a little less on the fashion yous might have a better chance of actually winning something for the first time ever!

MesAmis,
We concentrate on being a 'True GAA Club' operating at the highest level of the highest grade in every single GAA code known to man and woman and not just plough all our efforts into being 'one code wonders' with lip service paid to the other codes or having Intermediate/Junior suffice as an adult grade in any code!
Fashion and looking good are just an intrinsic part of being a Lucanian....like being wealthy and highly educated!

Snufs classic ''one code wonders'' id take being a one code wonder over thinking i was from a dual team any day. A quick look at the might Lucans records and all they seem to win are B, C even think i seen them win a D title, a club that every other should strive to be like...

At one time did counties wear the county champions jerseys? I know that in the 30's or 40's Kerry had red & white jerseys as Dingle were county championships

That's what I thought but speaking to a man who was there in 1951 a few years ago....he reckons they wore white for a few years - rep connacht - probably a bit of truth in both stories.
Are ya ready for Feb 6th Cute_Kerry_Hoor? Should be a big crowd in McHale park for Mayo v Kerry

That's interesting enough alright.
I am indeed yew_tree. Will stop over in Galway on the Saturday night. Hopefully the weather will be much better than it was two years ago. We were lucky enough to come out with a win that day.
On another note, the players seem to be loving Cian O' Neill's methods, I think the older guys always appreciate change and freshness. The pre-match warm-up last weekend was very similar to what he had Mayo doing last year, very intense.

Dublin first wore navy shorts in 1974 when they began to appear on TV again.
Nah they were always navy - it was just pre 1974 you were watching TV in black and white.....

Yes, I heard the story. Unless she was washing Dublin jersies in 1949 or 1950, that is not why the jersey became sky blue! First time they wore navy shorts was 1974. Check out the old photographs. And hurlers wore the sky blue and white shorts until a few years later.

By the way Liam it is possible that the original royal blue jersies were died sky blue but that had nothing to do with the shorts.
Another story I heard regarding the Jersies is that they changed them in 1953 when they played Cavan in the league final. Cavan had made that shade of blue their own by that stage.

The Mayo players I spoke too really liked Cian and his training methods - as they say a fresh start and different perspective can make wonders. I have also heard great things about Donie Buckley
