Can I just clarify something here, my question about Ballymun was 100% genuine and sincere; there was no hidden agenda or attempt to be smart or stir anything. I am always interested in the history of club sides and as a trade unionist and someone from working class stock I would NEVER be condescending or look down on ANY team because they of their 'perceived' social status or the district they come from. Thanks for the article about Ballymun doublehop it was a good read and a bit of an eye opener about the stick they have taken. I wish them all the best and think they will have a wee bit too much for Brigid's in the final.

Don't think anyone would've doubted your intentions man.

Read through that article that doublehop put up myself and it certainly rings true. My own club would have a similar make up of backgrounds as Ballymun but crucially not many of the pre-conceptions that people have of Ballymun. But I can certainly understand the jibes given by some of our more "illustrious" neighbours, never happens when you lose but their true colours get shown when you win!

your probably aware, the flats were built in 1966 (like divis flats) .each block in ballymun named after the signatories of the 1916 rising.

Ballymin is an amalgamation of 2 clubs:

The local "Ballymun Gaels" who had been in existence in the semi rural area and "CJ Kickhams" who were mostly country men whose club had I'm pretty sure started as the Staff team in the famous "Clery's" O'Connell St.

Neither had been greatly suscessfull for many years ( and I dont know when Gaels were formed but CJ's go back to around 1900.

I went to school in St. Joseph's Balcurris, very working class area around that school. And I can assure you that Kickhams were very involved with working class kids in the area. They even provided transport to school matches etc. So I don't know where this Ballymun don't work with working class kids is coming from
Sean Currie, Phillip McMahon, Davy Byrne and Ted Furman all grew up within a five minute walk of that school I think.

Some very ill informed people out there!

The working class area I live in is in Dublin west , three years ago worried about juvenille retention we commissioned a report , we found in a two mile radius there was at least 11 soccer clubs , while my club work very hard in local schools to capture hearts and minds its a uphill battle , have never seen evidence that County Board or GAA Bigwigs too bothered about issue .

Damo,

I know a soccer 'club' that is nothing more than a few lads from two streets combined and the the name of the 'club' is the first part of one streets name combined with the second part of the other streets name!!!!.............They are just a bunch of lads who play in a league and are just 'one' team! If you asked them about juvenile training in their 'club' they would point to their mots and say...."they'll tell ya where to find the local creche"!!!

Lots of soccer 'clubs' are just a 40ft ISO container and 3 teams or so!!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

JapB I went to school both primary and secondary in Ballymun and I would completely disagree with you. Family all played for Kickhams, still do, none from the flats area same with their team mates. Most of the players on Kickhams in my time where not from the Ballymun area. This has and is changing for the better, but to add another view of Ballymun Kickhams which shows it was NOT an exclusive working class club: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2012/1128/1224327206339.html

The flags and banners and bunting flowing most is in Santry, Ballygall, Wadelai, Glasnevin Avenue area's, up into Erin's Isle and Na Fianna territory.

So its all the best for Ballymun they'll have a huge "Dublin" following wishing them well and hopefully a win will be a huge boost for the club and area they now represent.

Snuf , my point was on the back of accumulation of points made by previous posters , some areas are predominantly soccer areas and difficult to penetrate , I am aware of two of my neighbouring clubs that have pulled teams in last week one an u15s team another an U13s , the u13s coach I spoke to gave as key reason losing players to soccer , competition is fierce for kids in my area , soccer coaches openly going to parents hall doors and turning heads ,
Have county board done anything in these areas , as I work , coach two teams and attend CCC delegate meetings , my answer is No .
Its down to local volunteers , club members to fight the good fight .

Kickhams were very poor in the 2nd half and faded badly after a great start; St. Brigid's fully deserved their win on that 2nd half display. Good match to watch. WELL DONE ST. BRIGID'S!

My god are us Dubs cursed? How many times do we lose these type of games wether it be the Dublin senior team or any team from Dublin? Except Kerry 11 it feels like we always lose big games by a point when at stages it look impossible to lose. Anyway well done Brigids on a great win hard luck Ballymun
