League Finals in New York

you say its clear they are going to promote the games abroad and which would rather between america or aussie rules well neither.
i would rather they promote the sport here first and foremost which they never do.there advertising for both the league and championship is appauling in comparison to the other sports played here they just put the games on and assume people will show up,ireland as you well know is a changing place where media and advertising is holding sway over so many people in this country i cannot see why the gaa dont go all out to promote both the national league and the championship and try and double the viewing and attendance figures that to me would be far more an impressive feat then having a few americans attend a match once a year and pat them on the back or having our best players on the catwalk for australian clubs to eye up.

All points above taken and in agreement. Regarding the topic, I have expressed opinions above but after reading a bit of the debate here I have to admit maybe my original thoughts were a bit rash. I think I have been swayed to do a u-turn. You can learn from these threads when there is proper debate on them. That said i'd rather our games were promoted abroad rather than the Aussie series being promoted here. The Galway fella made a great point about the negatives of the Aussie series and he is spot on in the points he makes.

Regarding the lack of promotion of our games in Ireland you are bang on the money. At most succesful counties play 18 games a year. Thats all and at present only about 7 of them (all championship games) are given full and proper recognition. A joke. The economy and the GAA would both be a lot better off if the other 11 games were given fair dues. No doubt.

There are many 'real' GAA people in NY, they moved a long way from home for work and many can not travel home due to visa issues. It is a great gesture from the GAA to the Irish GAA people living abroad.

Yea great gesture to the Irish people living in NY and a kick in the teeth to the loyal followers here in Ireland who travel up and down the roads to matches all year round.

The infamous invisible Galway support :) the league finals are very poorly attended , plenty of loyal supporters and players clicking abroad too

I am leaving today......

The greatest games on earth should be showcased in the greatest city on earth. We also need the GAA to work on Live GAA games shown free to air in as many countries as possible across the world.

haha best city on earth why becuase the american media say so haha give me a break.why do we need free to air matches shown in as many countries across the world as possible the gaa is not promoted in their media so why would they care?

but they already have a championship match on show for the irish and americans in new york and it actualy represents the city but nobody has any interest in it so why waste a league final over there?

haha good man.well from a financial point of view the international rules series is much better for the gaa it regularly got a full house in croker during the 00tys and last time was on here it got 30 thousand into the gaelic grounds in limerick which is massive exposure in a county and stadium where nobody attends matches so was a success and then in croker got 60 thousand the following week so it still brings in the crowds.
on the promotion aspect just look what they can achieve when the games are promoted vigurously dublin v tyrone under lights in croker twice got 80 thousand crowds for the league matches, surely with the likes of double headers in the provincial championships it means they only have to advertise for one stadium so they should be well able to promote them through advertising instead of just one lazy add that covers the whole year and doesnt target individual games.

the reason for free to air games worldwide is so that the many Irish who have left or been forced to emigrate can watch the games, you can't even watch the games on RTE player, so at best you watch it on some crappy streaming website with terrible quality.

You are completely wrong hill, it means an awful lot to the Irish in NY, have you ever actually been to a match there?

I have been to New York and I would consur with Yew Tree. It is the best city on earth (in my opinion as well). Times Square, the 59th street bridge, Soho, Central Park at Christmas, 5th Avenue are iconic global landmarks..maybe it is because of the American media, regardless they are iconic, amazing (man-made places)..if we deal solely in objectivity (as supposed to subjectivity), then only possibly London, Rio, Paris or Tokyo could compete with New York. It would be great to have a major GAA game there, though as i said earlier, I would like to see the GAA sort out its marketing shambles here first. We are miles behind other organizations.

not judging by the turn out they get for the match and would that match not be arguably a bigger game seen as its a championship match and it involves a new york representive team unlike two neutral countys playing in the league.

you cant have your cake and eat it.its not the gaa fault people left the country why should they fork out big money for a minimum percentage audience in a foreign country.

becuase it has a few tourist attractions hmmm i think the media has a big input in it as the american media controls the world media in essence,im not saying its not a good place i havent been myself but im saying if dubai had the same mentality as the western world it would certainly be hyped up to the same degree.
also the american traditional holiday destination of cancun which has become one of biggest in world becuase of a reputation in that same media leaves a lot to be desired as i have been there and its totaly differant to what you are lead to believe.i dontknow how you could class somewhere the best city in the world as differant people enjoy differant things weather it be on holiday or a place to live.

what would you have as the best city in the world hill?.please dont say dublin..you really have it against media of all forms it seems...i dont mind the games being brought to america as there is enough of us out there and it would be great to see it..there is very little interest in the league finals as it is and im all for growing the games around the world why wouldnt anybody want to see the game grown abroad?...and as for people emigrating do you have a problem with that hill?..its not the gaas fault but its hardly their fault either

i would love to see gaa on sky also..even though sky can be a bit annoying they are exceptionally good at providing sports with extensive coverage if they show an interest in it

whatever about bringing games abroad i feel it is very important to get the games shown on tv stations abroad in britain america and australia...a deal with sky could be very beneficial in the long run plus rte are in far too much of a comfort zone as it is in terms of gaa coverage so it would be no harm for some more competition

Galway1974 the GAA is played all round the world not just in Ireland, my own club in London is over 90 years old. Have friends who set up a team in Mogngolia to play in the Asian games, so quit this rubbish that its just an Irish game played in Ireland. My own club have had Welsh, Scots, Aussies and Kiwi's play for us over the years ,even the all black great Zinzan Brooke played GAA with a club in London. Also could you tell which county Liam McCarthy and Sam Maguire are both associated with??
------------------------------------------------------------

I never said that the games are not played abroad. Every sport is played in every country around the world. That does not give the right for the GAA to take our national league final out of Ireland to satisfy the minority. Would the Americans play the Superbowl here in Ireland? even if they did do you think that every young Irish boy and girl would be inspired to take up American football? The whole idea about this proposal is a joke!
