League Finals in New York

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Not sure about this one. The league is the second biggest competiton it doesn't seem fair depriving fans of their right to watch there team in a national final.

whats the point in trying to promote the game abroad when its only played in ireland or by irish people at least.
why not focus on like others have said promoting it here better, its a waste of time playing it in america for what one turnout a year how are they going to watch anpther gaa match when there is no matches played over there considering the government are finding it hard enough to get them to come here on a holiday they are hardly going to fly to ireland each week as die hard gaaa supporters now are they.

In all fairness folks think about it!! If the british cricket finals, or the Japanese table tennis finals was played in Ireland would you see that as a inspiration to pick up a cricket bat or a table tennis racket? I wouldn't give a hoot about it!!! What I do care about is this nonsense that if you take our national game overseas that Americans will drop their football and basketball and pick up hurling and Gaelic football from simply watching one game!! what a load of tosh! the only losers here will be the real Irish GAA supporters who after following their team to the national league semi finals been told by their mom and dad that they will have the watch the next game on their telly because the GAA want to bring our games overseas for one day only!! God help the poor fans that travel if the game ends in a draw!!!!!!!!!

the Game is not only played in Ireland its played all over the world it might not be as well know abroad but thats the point of having the Finals in NY to promote the GAA
what about the large Tournaments in 2013 in Dubai and Amsterdam or the European championship and on and on and on ,
the Game is wider spread than most people know

Keep our national games here in our own country. There is absolutely nothing to be achieved by brining the finals overseas, anyone who thinks differently is living on cloud cuckoo land! No other country will drop a paid sport to play amateur GAA games. Its only the Irish themselves who give the passion and desire to commit to a sport that they play solely for the love of their sport, county and country. The only ones that show interest abroad is the Irish themselves or those with Irish roots. I think that the GAA have already accommodated them by having two extra teams in the ALL IRELAND championships in London and New York. As for the Aussie rules dont get me started!!!

Its clear from the noisese being made both by the GPA and the GAA that the GAA will be marketing the games abroad in the coming years. I don't think there is anyway of getting away from that whether you agree with it or not. Taking that into consideration, would you prefer for Aussie rules to be scarpped and for that energy to be used on staging intercounty games in America or for the aussie thing to continue adn nothing to be done on marketing our games abroad through staging games. Hypotethical question, I know but i'd be interested on hearing what you and others here thought.

I personally would prefer to see an end to the Aussie thing and for the odd game to be played abroad. (and by the way I know that the odd Championship game gets played abroad all ready!)

The Aussie games is a complete waste of time. Entertaining to watch but does nothing in promoting our games abroad. At worst it gives the Aussies a chance to see our talent here and make tempting offers to our most talented players to leave our sport. As I said in one of my previous comments, if the Gaa wanted to make a big promotional event out of our national games why dont they fix the ALL Ireland championships finals both in hurling and football in one of the biggest stadiums overseas. They could organize chartered flights for the four counties involved. Part with the money that they would have made at Croke park and pay and largest seated venue in the states to show that it could be filled 3 times over with people who love the games and probably set a world record for the largest attended crowd for any amateur sporting event. Double header of Hurling and football all Ireland finals, thousands of Irish, everyone gets a ticket, lovely weather conditions, american economy boosted by alcohol sales, loads of hype when the Americans see it bigger than the super-bowl. Its only dreamland, BUT THAT IS HOW YOU DO IT!!

what the GAA need to do first is to get the games to wider audienec via television, they need to get the game son Sky tv etc where they will have more chance of getting people watching the games and maybe taking an interest in it and looking at finding a local club.

Thats great!!! not alone will families miss out in the finals been played here in Ireland they will have to pay to see the game on Sky box office who would only love to steal the rights to view the games of RTE and make die hard GAA fans pay for it!
Its a non runner folks, the games are Irish, belong to the Irish and are played on this Island. Stop trying to justify that we need to promote our sports overseas, there is no point. GAA has been played on this Island for over 100 years if there was a hugh interest abroad in our games it would have been taking up long ago.

There are many 'real' GAA people in NY, they moved a long way from home for work and many can not travel home due to visa issues. It is a great gesture from the GAA to the Irish GAA people living abroad.

you can still have the games on ITV and TV3 in Ireland, Sky could have the broadcast rights for the UK. As with the soccer Sky and RTE both show Irelands games.

Galway1974 the GAA is played all round the world not just in Ireland, my own club in London is over 90 years old. Have friends who set up a team in Mogngolia to play in the Asian games, so quit this rubbish that its just an Irish game played in Ireland. My own club have had Welsh, Scots, Aussies and Kiwi's play for us over the years ,even the all black great Zinzan Brooke played GAA with a club in London. Also could you tell which county Liam McCarthy and Sam Maguire are both associated with??

oh come on yeah we all know about these micky mouse tournaments played in your afore mentioned places but they are not we or the gaa is talking about or looking for from promoting the game abroad, sure theres an american football league in dublin but you would hardly say its wide spread here like there only played for fun not at a competitive level.there is already a mjor match played in new york in the main competition that the gaa has and it actualy is the first game of the championship every year but yet does it attract americans to go to it does it entice people to take up the game? you could definatly argue that a connaught championship match which is the launching of the gaa championship is a bigger game to have their as it involves a representive team from america and it hasnt worked its played in front of a small crowd.

I'd agree 100% about the Aussie part above but the concensus stops there. You could never take Ireland's showcase sporting final out of Ireland. A league final, yes. 1947 in the polo grounds final it worked but times have changed and it would not work again.

Yea great gesture to the Irish people living in NY and a kick in the teeth to the loyal followers here in Ireland who travel up and down the roads to matches all year round.

you say its clear they are going to promote the games abroad and which would rather between america or aussie rules well neither.
i would rather they promote the sport here first and foremost which they never do.there advertising for both the league and championship is appauling in comparison to the other sports played here they just put the games on and assume people will show up,ireland as you well know is a changing place where media and advertising is holding sway over so many people in this country i cannot see why the gaa dont go all out to promote both the national league and the championship and try and double the viewing and attendance figures that to me would be far more an impressive feat then having a few americans attend a match once a year and pat them on the back or having our best players on the catwalk for australian clubs to eye up.

Start spreading the news
I am leaving today......

The greatest games on earth should be showcased in the greatest city on earth. We also need the GAA to work on Live GAA games shown free to air in as many countries as possible across the world.
