Yes, it's a combination of hard work and good management. Donal O'Grady was another manager who got the best out of his players in sheer effort.

Another simple reason Kilkenny win so much is that they don't let the other team play. When Kilkenny don't have the ball they devote all their energies to getting it back. Too may other teams just stand aside and let the other team hurl once they have the ball, depending on a chance of getting a break. Only teams that have made an effort equal to Kilkenny can beat them. But no team can put in that effort so often as Kilkenny.

only one sport in kilkenny (hurling) its a disgrace, something needs to be done about it.

How many sports are played in Louth?? Mediocre at football and useless at hurling. We just do not like football in Kilkenny. Simple as and it is not going to change.

I don't see it as 'disgrace'...people make up their own minds about what they like. Like anything, a little bit of luck has helped KK to be great. While they have super players everywhere, Henry Shefflin, Tommy Walsh and JJ are three of a kind. If KK had only one of them then maybe the rest of us could handle that but to have three of the greatest players ever at one time has helped. Their greatness comes from their attitude and behaviour off the field. Winning an All-Ireland takes a year to make..other counties might not have the talent at their disposal, however, there is no reason why they cannot match the attitude of KK players.

mullinr2 - we have two teams in the Airtricity League - Ardee, Dundalk and Boyne Rugby Teams, - We have a boxing club, - Hurling and football clubs unlike ye who refuse to play football because ye are afraid it will harm the hurling. We have the boyne running club also. here face the facts ye are a national embarrassment when it comes to promoting football in kilkenny

Too many others bring the ball down with the hurl, Kilkenny only use the hand for high ball therefore one touch less and in control immediately. Kilkenny's support play, physical strength and sheer doggedness has to be recognised as better than anyone else. There is light at the end of the tunnel I do think Clare has started to close the gap in these areas and probably Limerick too, the rest just haven't got it yet - aerial power or when you play Kilkenny play the ball along the ground first time!

Haha, good one! Nothing to do with the fact that Kilkenny are far superior in every aspect of the beautiful game, no?

Joe_Don Kilkenny has many of those as well.

And no county should try tell any other county what to play. One word which hasnt been mentioned here is tradition. The honour of wearing the black and amber, and the fact that you are obviously a good hurler if you have made it to that level. Also kids in Kilkenny come home from school and get out the hurls. Drive through Kilkenny any day around 4-5 o'clock and young lads are out hurling.

There is no secret to their success. Just hard work, kids hitting a ball to each other, getting the basics right and the rest looking after itself.

It's hard to put your finger on just one thing. So my top 3 reasons why the Cats are so successful are 1. This group of players hate to lose. After the defeat to Tipp in the '10 final a lot of the players had tears in their eyes which was amazing after all the success this team enjoyed before this. 2. Cody being ruthless with the talent at he's deposal. Early on Cody put down the marker to all players , that if your not performing coming up to a game you will be dropped no matter who you were, e.g. Charlie Carter. 3. Development of young players . It's has become a snow ball effect with young kids now. When i was growing up in the 70's only kids from middle class and rural families played the game now you have kids from all walks of life. I was back for an All- Ireland a few years ago and the Saturday before the final our club ran an under 10 blitz. They were at least 150 kids there that day wanting to imulate their heros and I was shocked at what a high skill level they were at already.

your not looking at club level in tipp too closely if you think its strong...back that up.... Cork to be honest hasn't looked that strong either for a few years

Hurling men and women" minding the game" in a traditional way. A fanatic in Cody who can make great players consistently play great.A tremendous skill level allied to a desire to win every skirmish for a 50/50 ball.

secret to their success? Ignoring football

If that's true then there should be a lot of counties a lot better at football then they currently are.

A huge number of counties ignoring hurling and only one ignoring football yet it's Kilkenny that get lambasted for it.

Maybe it's because they're successful at hurling. If only they'd be bad at hurling (like a lot of counties that ignore hurling never win anything in football) then no-one would care.

John_Don, Kilkenny also have a rugby team, numerous soccer clubs, boxing and mixed martial arts clubs. Quite a few of the Kickboxers have being European and World Champions. Just face it man its just jealousy you process. Id rather have an outstanding hurling team then a mediocre Gaelic team and useless hurling team like Louth and quite a few counties which I could mention. Gaelic Football is the main GAA sport in Louth. John_Don list me any achievements Louth has won at any level, club or county over the last ten years? Probably not much.
