I was just thinking about inter county players who emigrated in the past or who recently emigrated,Monaghan lost Rory Woods to emigration and Tommy Freeman also emigrated for a while.I was wondering what other players have emigrated.

Seen a program on Setanta a few weeks back, An exile's home in the Bronx, which documented the New York GAA squad over the course of their build up to the 2011 campaign. Many of the players gave accounts of why they've left and came to be where they are now. All of them were for work reasons.
I supposed the biggest name would have been Dan Doona, although there were a few other lads from Mayo and Wexford who had played intercounty here before emigrating.

Leitrim got to the All-Ireland minor final in 1956. The following week 12 of the 15 players had emigrated.

More recently we lost 22 players from the 2010 senior panel of 32. Only 10 of those remained in 2012.
That said some was from retirement and injuries.

In Meath Terry Skelly (Drumconrath) was a big part of Banty's plans for 2012 and did very well in challenge matches early in the year before upping sticks to Oz in the spring. I think there was a Dublin player...Niall Corkery I think, played in 2010 against Meath and he is now living in London.

Aidan Kilcoyne was a massive loss to mayo, he was just what we were missing this year. Trevor Howley also left.

I never knew Trevor Mortimor emigrated,I remember Niall Corkery playing with Dublin, would the stronger teams like Kerry or Cork have lost many players,I know there was a boy who played championship football with Cork called Fiachra Lynch and he left the country,is Barry John walsh still in Australia.

Barry John Walsh is home and has been called into the Kerry Winter Training Panel. I was actually talking with his brother Tommy a few weeks ago in Tralee, he's home from Oz at the moment, very nice guy.

We've lost alot of club players like other rural counties but only a handful of lads that could've possibly broken into the Senior panel. Dan Doona is the main example. Daithi Casey was on the Kerry panel at the start of the year but went travelling this Summer, he's back now playing with Dr. Crokes. Same with Tomas Mac a tSaoir.

Ger Reidy was teaching in England for a bit and is still there. He had the makings of good keeper.

Donnacha Tobin from Meath has gone to Australia until June. He was one of the young stars of Meaths summer.
