Donal Keoghan, Young Player of the Year 2012

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Donal has been outstanding all championship and IMO is worthy of this award, this subject was discussed as part of another thread but as it was taking away from main topic, better to discuss it in its own right

Unfortunatly I dont think he's played late enough into the year to get it. the games he did play in, he was exceptional, but ultimatly he played no football in August and its hard to see the winner of this sort of award coming from there.

Best of luck to him all the same tho.

YES. all meaths championship.
I think the fact that he got into gaa team of year and other two nominees were both playing last year gives him a good shout, also the fact that both j Doyle and kev mcm were both subbed while been marked by him and both having been in great form coming into those games kev motm twice, only adds to his credentials

Didnt play enough football against the best counties late into the championship

Dublin were average this year... as for Kildare?

No question he's a talent... but you cant be handing out such an award to a lad after playing a couple of games and then going off injured in the first half against Laois.

He is an outstanding defender and man marker. I would like to see him get this award on the basis that sometimes the art of defending is overlooked and Keoghan gave a masterclass against Kildare and Dublin in this. I don't think O'Connor or McBrearty have done enough to deserve the award. O'Connor was brilliant from a deadball but don't think he did enough from play. McBrearty played very well early in the championship in a withdrawn role but wasn't as effective when Donegal got to Croke Park but his day will come again. Was surprised that Mark McHugh (is he illegible for it?) was nominated for the award as he would have been a contender for sure but from the 3 that have been nominated I would go with Keoghan.

I agree he should get it but should the topic of the thread not just be 'Young player of the year'. Would look less like you're on a one man lobbying campaign on his behalf...

Biggy must be wondering what he did wrong that you've stopped your campaigning for him!

He would be a worthy recipient of the award. Meath will be a major force again in a year or 2

Royaldunne's Meat bias is actaully quite astonishing.

Not a hope in hell of getting it. Cillian O' Connor will get the nod. An excellent footballer with a great ability to get on the ball. Paddy McBrearty will be breathing down his neck. Cannot see Keoghan even in the shake up.

He had a great year in fairness to the lad.

The fact that he didn't play late into the championship could count against him but there isn't any other outstanding candidates imo so he could get it.

Another thread canvassing for this player although the heading gives the impression he has actually been announced. Good canvassing trick.

I expect McBrearty to win it but Donal K would be a good winner also.

Gammy its the exact same heading as the one for karl Lacey didn't hear you complain about that,,? Oh forgot he's not from meath, less of the bias, definitely deserves it,
Double as for biggy I have no doubt he will have _plenty of awards including poty, all stars etc in his career, biggy was robbed of this same award in 10 i don't want to see it happening again

Keogan has been nominated for an all star the other 2 haven't.

Cillian O'Connor is a great player, but he's a forward, I haven't checked this but someone on another page said he has scored 2 points from play for the entire championship? And McBrearty wasn't much better.

If Keogan was marking McBrearty or O'Connor I'd say they would be subbed fairly quick!

But again he probably won't get it because 1) The anti-Meath brigade that give out these awards 2) The other 2 were playing in September.

Yep classapart the main reason he won't get it is because of your first point

Royaldunne

Not one Meath player, not a single one of them, would get on the Dublin, Cork or Donegal teams.

None of them

Don't think that's fair Liam, I'm not one to throw bouquets at Meath players unless I think they deserve it but I'd say both Reilly's and Keoghan himself would be in with chance of making the Dublin starting 15, Biggy certainly would, maybe not the other two. However I do agree that none of our players would make the Cork or Donegal teams, they may be squad players on those teams but nothing more.

Mental. I think tyrone and meath are most hated teams in ireland. None of their supporters can have opinions on anything.

Im a Donegal man and even I think Keoghan deserves YPOTY ahead of the other 2. And lets be honest that comment about not getting onto Donegal,Cork,Dublin is a joke. I think all 3 mentioned would def be pushing for places. Keoghan is similar to Paddy McGrath except probably not a built, potential has better reading of game.

The 2 other guys mentioned are forwards and cant really make an impact on the scoreboard. There excuse is they are young and will imporve but Keoghan, from what iv seen, is already great at his position.

I think he should get it and if the other 2 get it, then they may as well rename the award to "Young player who played in All Ireland Final"
