Isn't Man O War a cricket stronghold? Think couple of their lads played on team the beat England last year.

Wexford could have a separate championship for teams with unusual names: Shelmaliers, Raparees, Buffers Alley, Starlights, Faythe Harriers etc. What is a Shelmalier anyway? Something to do with the 1798 rebellion I'm guessing.

Gaillimh_Abu I will try to help you on the wonderful names in my county.

Shelmalier is an area around Castlebridge in Wexford. I think it used to be a barony of east and west, or north and south, not sure which but not 100% on that.

A Raparee is a fighter with a pike, I think it dates from 1500-1600 or there abouts. Starlights are the football version of the Rapparees, aka The Rapps, cant help on the name.

Faythe is an area of Wexford town, I think a harrier was/is a land defender. They are in senior hurling final tomorrow!

Cant help on Buffers Alley but will do some more digging.

Wexford has some weird ones alright: Shelmaliers, Raparees/Starlights, Geraldine O'Hanrahans, Buffers Alley, Duffry Rovers, Craanford Fr O'Regans, Volunteers,
Half Way House-Bunclody, Faythe Harriers, Sarsfields, Realt na Meara and who the hell is Liam Mellow?

Thanks Pinkie for shedding light on those wonderful Wexford club names. In response to your countyman, gaafarmer, Liam Mellowes was a commander in the Easter rising and was later elected as a republican TD. He was executed by the Free-State forces during the war of independence. He is very well known in Galway, with a statue in Eyre Square and the city's only senior hurling club named after him. I never knew about his Wexford connections until now though.

1282151 Celebrity Bainisteoir Final 2013
Muff (Dún na nGall) 1-14
Nobber (An Mhí) 2-10

Nobber took to the field up for the challenge that lay ahead whereas Muff on the other hand were ragged looking. Straight from the off Nobber got stuck in trying hard to penetrate Muff who did their best not to let them get in behind. Play swayed from side to side with both sides having dominant times on top but the half ended all square and both teams in need of the break. The start of the second half saw Muffs purple period. It was during this phase that Nobber got dirty which seemed to affect their game and render them impotent with Muff constantly in their faces. The referee looked like he had lost control of the game but he got tough and took Nobber in hand which seemed to shake them up a bit and focus on the task in front of them . The last few minutes were frantic with Nobber throwing everything at Muff though it was too little too late as Muff came out on top by the smallest of margins. A close shave for Muff in the end with Nobber left to limp home.

I think it all went wrong for Nobber when they changed ends and were playing against the wind. A better option would have been to fist over the bar (however the landlord wouldn't allow it)

We are full of St Michaels this and St Aidans that here in Roscommon with the usual Padraig Pearses thrown into the mix ( is there one in every county). Personally think that every club team should include a geographical reference somewhere in the club title. Only semi unusual name around these parts would be Tulsk Lord Edwards.

Great games in prospect and no fannying around with the ball. The planet Uranus appearing in the sky makes the story complete.

Not to mention all this playing away from home. Remember that well known Kildare player Bill Sex, yes you guessed,he never came before his time.
Of course we know the noble game is played with brand new hard balls and its always easy to make a "pass". Sometimes its hard to keep abreast of all the referees decisions. Then you have managers bellowing "get the finger out", out of where ?,one would be inclined to ask. Matches could be refereed by Julian Cleary and Graham Norton so that both halves of the human spectrum are covered, Funny names? Horse and Jockey,Oulart the Ballagh,Cummin Rovers,Feel Rangers, sorry that should spell Feale,Dicksboro,Hospital,Fuerty,Mantua,Turin, Man o`War,Shilelagh,Ballyhahahaunis,Eastern Bales.

chatting to a lad who played for Fighting Cocks, told me the club was founded in the pub The Fighting Cocks and took the name of the pub. Pretty sure there is a team in Scotland called Sands McSwineys, also in the Asian games last year you had the Mongol Khans, Penang Pumas, Jakarta Dragonflies

The fighting Cocks pub is on the left hand side before you come into Ballon from Bunclody/Kildavin side.

Would love to hear the contents of the conversation that formed it....
