Blanket Defence= the end!!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think some balance is needed here. The rubbish spouted by ulsterman from antrim does noone any favours.I am from the west and work in dublin so meet a fair crosssection of fans.To say that people resented ulster success is without foundation. In fact there was even greater admiration as we all know what went on up there;just dont overplay the victim part.
To criticise blanket defence is unfair as well as were tyrone armagh etc just going to let kerry run thru them?...dublin would want to take note as i believe they will meet kerry in this years final.
The one thing us 'freestaters' resented was the idea that ulster counties has reinvented the wheel as regards football...as always kerry put an end to the 'new wheel'.At the moment ulster teams seem to be overly obsessed with statistics ,tactics etc...While there is always a place for these i think it is time to get back to basics for ulster teams as one thing we all agree on is that there is no shortage of quality players in the province.

Bogboy that championship program is a bloody holy joke. Lurgan, McHugh etc might as well have "I HATE KERRY" tatooed into their heads.
However unpretty Tyrone's win was in '03, the fact most Kerry people acknowledged was, we were 09-02 down at half time. We were well beaten. We had no plan B and for the 3rd year in a row in Croke Park our sidelines was a joke. You will struggle to find a man around who will say Tyrone didn't deserve it in 2005. Enough said on the matter???

I' not a soccer fan,but I do recall the great Danny Blanchflower saying that football was about GLORY. Something about that sounds right.

Some great posts on the hread lads, mostly debate for once and only a few insults!!!!

Omaghjoe - i've been making the same argument as you for years on this board that Tyrone's style varies greatly from Armagh.

Tyrone have consistently had a very high scoring rate - think someone said it is 17/18 points per game - not bad for a so called 'defensive' team!

Apologies omaghjoe, just read your post. You are spot on and are obviously a keen student of the game. What i was trying to do was give an overview of the arguement rather than going into specifics. Also ulstermans post kinda riled me.

kingdom come you may have a point on anti Kerry bias, but at least on the BBC they attempt to unpick games, explain the result and try to analyse in an objective manner. The Sunday Game in my opinion is a joke, Spillane, Lyons, Flynn, Brolly, O Rourke are subjective in their analysis and even try to influence referees on how games should be approached. Only Tohill and dara provide intelligent, objective and credible analysis.

A good example was Tommy Lyons prior to the Final in 2005 trying to suggest that more than one man around a player was illegal, if a player in possession is surrounded by the an entire team but no one fouls him, how can you award a free ?(Just one example of bias before an All Ireland final, obviously he wanted a Kerry victory)

Then for RTE to have a overtly biased anchor, now that's what I call a joke !

Again in your post you mention how 'unrest' Tyrone's victory was in 2003, that's your opinion but to us its just Kerry whinging again, if Tyrone was so comprehensively beaten I would keep my head down and say nothing !

I think theres a lot of people missing the point here and some obviously enjoy stoking up other's emotions.. Anyways here's Gurty's two penny bit: 1. Talk of puke football is ridiculous. The very fact that the phrase was coined by a certain pundit who in my opinion comes from the most cynical county to ever play the game is more ridiculous. 2. Talk of partition, freestaters, foreign invaders and north vs south on this thread is even more ridiculous. For christs sake - its our national game and if you need to bring that sort of craic into it - its politics not football you should be watching.. I spend a lot of time up North myself and seldon hear the like of that ***** in relation to football - think a certain "Ulsterman" needs a reality check. 3. Tyrone and Armagh definitely do have too very doffernt styles of football.. Personally speaking I would prefer Arnagh myself as they remind me a lot of our own team and style of play from the early 90s / late 80s.. Such determinatio is smoething we clearly missed this year. The most important thing to remember is being "Nice" will win you nothing.. Remeber what the pundits said after the connacht final this year - well they were proven right in the end.. Metah have won many titles being hard in the past with a mean streak - and if you look at any or the All Ireland winners (Kerry / Ulster) since they have all been the same.. I wonder how many people from the supposed "footballing" counties would fancy some of the All Ireland wining memories...???? Medals is the only currency that counts in my opinion lads

Now now bogboy I think I will hav to disagree with you about The Championship, it really isnt that great. i mean Jarlath Burns and Martin McHugh are always having a slagging match its patethic, very ameaturish.
Although RTE arent great either Tommy Lyons for example, but they have a few Dara O'Cinedde and Tohill I like, and Brolly is always making a complete idget of himself but he does know his stuff. I agree though about Spillane always trying to get his agenda stuck in there, I wish he would shut up.

However the whole set up is alot more professional that the BBC, which looks like a student production.

The blanket defence is horrible to watch in a game. It is coming in hurling in recent years and is runing what is the worlds greatest game.

The Blanket defence is alive and kicking sorry to say, Tyrone have developed into a blanket defence and attack.

And did anyone notice Kildare, Wexford, Westmeath using it and it was a KERRY man that introduced it into Westmeath and KERRY also realise that you need players filtering back and have incorporated it into their game to great SUCCESS!!!
