Dont think he would have made the kerry team too selfish imo have to be a team player to win medals so that is the reason he hasnt got any. Never showed enough commitment and when it mattered on the big day he didnt show up.

Shows what you know. Even when it wasn't going his way he never stopped looking for the ball in those Finals. He kept trying in the face of adversity. And don't ever question Mac's commitment, it shows you know nothing about the man.

Agreed Killer. Poor comment. He was hampered in 06 final with a hamstring injury. He certainly showed up on the big day a few weeks before that.

Chicagoo9 how in gods name could he say he was too selfish. His main role was setting up other players, he could've easily been lazy and waited in corner forward and got all the plaudits for scoring with freedom, but no he went out in every match as a team player not an individual so keep quiet you sad man.

this is a complete non runner...even if mcdonald wanted to come back he is way off the pace of inter county football...in the recent championship match against westport his running was limited and spent more time recovering from any plays he made...this story is a complete nonsense

Sorry didnt mean to be so harsh but he was a great footballes and all but to listen to all these posters saying how he is god and all and he would still make the team is really silly. From what i saw of him in croke park that is how im judging him.

Fantastic footballer who came across really well on "On the Ball" yesterday evening.

But a comeback? at 37? at this stage of the season?

It would be like one of those old time heavyweight world champions coming out of retirement, both sad & futile.

He would be cleaned out of it at the top level & I don't want to see that for a great great player.

Brought on for last ten mins in the game v Derry in 2007, game was over as a contest, jom dropped him to the bench in Salthil that year and again brought him on when the game was beyond Mayo. In 2008 the "textgate" happened but let the history books always tell the truth, JOM did not want the best footballer in Mayo on his team, Mac did not retire he was retired.

"Ciaran has no interest whatsoever of ever playing for Mayo again, sin e"

Based on his interview yesterday, that's not true.

Not a chance he would be cleaned out, as a matter of fact I would say he would run rings around a lot of lads much younger than himself. Wouldn't need to play 70 mins anyway.

he is one of the greats of our game, whenever he was on the ball it was special, he started out as a great scorer and finished up supplier, he deserved an all ireland medal, no doubht about it. i listened to the interviewe on off the ball and i hadnt seen an interview of him before, sounds like a decent bloke with a real love for the game, when you see the state football is in now it makes you appreciate even more how players like him showed gaelic football the great game it could be when played right.

When you play against either the Dublin or Donegal defence it is not about running rings around lads. To stand any kind of chance he would need to have been training and playing at county level all year so that he was in tune with the players round him. To suggest that you could just parachute a player, even a former great like McDonald, from club football to face either the Dublin or Donegal defences is fanciful.

A good idea would be to get a point in front of donegal, and then bring him on to pass the ball around his own back line. It wouldnt be long before that great donegal defence would be scratching their heads while their 1 man up front is chasing shadows.

I'm not exactly sure what it is you are proposing but I think that's what Donegal tried to do last year in the semi final & it didn't work out so well for us!!!!!

Still showed he has a great passion for the game and Mayo. A gent and what a player. If ever a Gaelic footballer deserved to win the Sam Maguire I would say it was him. Sadly his day has past, but what would you give to have him back in his prime…. I'm sure James Horan would have loved to have had him….
