I've been thinking about this subject for the last few days. Is it just me or is something missing this time around or are people just copping on that soccer is a borefest? Are people in Ireland just trying to recreate Euro 88 or Italy 90 or US 94. It seems to me that the imagination has not been captured to the same level.

The official viewing figures would tend to disagree with you on Euro 2012 struggling to capture the imagination of people in Ireland. Over 2.03m watched the Ireland Croatia game, the highest sporting audience in this country since the World Cup in 1994.

By way of comparison last year's All Ireland Football Final was watched by just over 1.085m, the Hurling Final by 847,000 and Ireland v England in the Six Nations by 690,000. Those figures tend to speak for themselves.

Impressive figures all right but they don't tell the real story. I remmeber Euro 88, Italy 90 etc. and the whole country north and south were absolutely entralled with what was going on. It doesn't seem that way now. I watched the game myself. It bored me to death but I watched it. I talked to alot of people who did the same but they all seem to agree that the buzz isn't the same and people couldn't really give a toss!

I think if most of us were to be honest, compared to Euro 88 and Italia 90, people nowadays have far more pressing issues on their minds.....a global recession, Europe in particular in absolute tatters, loads struggln to hang on to something as basic as the roof over their heads, not to mention the struggle to hang on to jobs...its not a good Irish team compared to the team in the 80s and 90s and those players are being paid obscene salaries. For me, watchn them is like rubbn salt into the wounds!! at least with our own lads playn Gaelic , its for the love of the game and true sportsmanship...end of......I actually feel uplifted even entering the grounds of Croke Park, well thats just me, dunno bout the rest of ye......

I dont miond at all and yes it might be a biased opinion but you can't argue and seriously say there is the same buzz about as there was for 88, 90, 94 and to a lesser extent 2002. Can you?

that 2.03m was at a peak the all ireland football final was 1.54m at a peak also you cannot compare the differance in the amount of advertising that has gone on for the two sports there was not even a mention of the all ireland final the day before on rte news in comparison to the euro championship every single programme has been mentioning it even on the sunday game they mentioned it on cooking shows womens good morning shows, craig doyle show is only about it now, vincent browne even has the sports editor come on to discuss it and tv3 dont even have the competition

I don't think this team has captured the imagination anything quite like the teams of 88, 90, 94 or even 2002? I remember been absolutely devastated when we lost to Spain on penalties in 2002, yet sadly I felt quite indifferent when we were beaten last Sunday which surprised me as traditionally I would have been a huge football fan. This is quite a limited Irish team and I would imagine that it would not even be a contest in a popularity contest between Big Jack and Trapp, this current Irish football team is a hard team to love, but either way I suppose we should be getting behind them.

You're right the Irish team hasn't caught the imagination of people in the way that Irish teams in previous finals did. I watched the second half in my local last sunday and at the end no one seemed too disappointed. Probably many expected that result anyway. If they lose tonight interest will further wane. By the time that the so called business end of the championship comes around, Euro 2012 will be a distant memory.

eh are you feeling ok i said there is as much interest as other years,my point with the viewing figures is that theres a world of differance in the advertising done by rte and others in comparison to the all ireland final who cares if its the biggest sport in the rest of the world it aint the biggest sport in ireland

of course this team hasn't captured the imagination..those teams we had were great teams..this team is poor and we are in an exceptionally tough group so nobody with any sense expects us to do well

Yeah but if thats the case why all the hype then, or is it just taken for granted that we will lose the run of ourselves anytime we are in the World Cup or Euros? Even our near neighbours across the water have been incredibly quiet for this tournament, never in all my years have I seen so little hype around an English team, yet up to last Sunday evening we were practically losing the run of ourselves!!
