People sometimes say "So what if I follow an English club? Why shouldn't I?" The problem I have with it is that so many people invest so much time, energy & money in following these clubs - paying for Sky Sports, going to the pub, buying the merch, going to Old Trafford etc. All fine & dandy in its own right BUT wouldn't a fair dollop of that better serve you, your family & your community by getting involved in your some of your local club(s), regardless of which sport? keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 09/06/2012 19:50:39 1190487 Link 0 |

Ok third time trying to post. Keeper and hill ye are judging players who give more to gaa than 90% of people. If they want to support an English club team and the Irish national team then so be it. They don't deserve to be chastised by ye. tipptothetop (Tipperary) - Posts: 531 - 10/06/2012 12:20:41 1190752 Link 0 |
It really annoys me when Irish people refer to Man Utd or Liverpool as WE. Bal1991 (Westmeath) - Posts: 95 - 10/06/2012 12:38:27 1190761 Link 0 |
I'm not chastising anyone, merely expressing my opinion. That's what forums are for. A Man Utd fan once said to me that it's just as hypocritical for the likes of me to refer to my county team as "we". I told him that as a member of & contributor to my local GAA club which feeds into all our county's teams I have every right to refer to any county Longford team as "we" because they do in many respects represent me, my efforts, mo mhuintir. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 10/06/2012 13:38:12 1190803 Link 0 |
Keeper have a look at your post above, that is a chastising statement. You are telling people what they should be doing with their money and their free time. tipptothetop (Tipperary) - Posts: 531 - 10/06/2012 14:22:48 1190823 Link 0 |

i think the football championship this year will be better than other year with so called weaker teams really pushing hye stronger ones look at carlow and meath, sligo and galway blueandgold78 (Offaly) - Posts: 39 - 11/06/2012 08:12:13 1191317 Link 0 |
this weekend was great. sligo beat galway, clare beat limerick, carlow draw against meath, wexford shock longord, cork beat kerry and tyrone put in a great performance to beat a decent armagh team. then we have ireland who are taking up most of every papers sports coverage and we are subject to a crap amateur performance for 90 mins. Half the countries counties were involved in GAA this weekend why do the sun or star only provide 1 page of coverage. I don't even recognize half of irelands players. they don't deserve the coverage it annoys me someone like denis obrien would put all that money towards that organization where everyone already earns 10 times too much. I was in Tullamore yesterday and I guarantee you will not see anything in Poland or The Ukraine to compare with the last fifteen minutes of the Longford/Wexford match. Those prima donnas (I dont refer to the Irish players to be fair) could certainly learn from the "amateurs" in Tullamore and all the other grounds around Ireland this and every summer. lochgarmanabu (Wexford) - Posts: 1022 - 11/06/2012 11:30:39 1191508 Link 0 |
Actually ended up watching it with my dog who decided to bark at the TV for most of the second half. Obviously either a discerning pundit or ultra patriotic! hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 11/06/2012 11:53:59 1191545 Link 0 |
I've been thinking about this subject for the last few days. Is it just me or is something missing this time around or are people just copping on that soccer is a borefest?. Are people in Ireland just trying to recreate Euro 88 or Italy 90 or US 94. It seems to me that the imagination has not been captured to the same level (don't get me wrong, as a GAA man that doesn't bother me). Is it because deep down the Irish public see todays soccer stars as spoilt millionaire brats compared the Irish teams that played in 88, 90 and 94 (men who lived wealthy lifestyles but nothing like todays pre madonna) and that they haven't the same effection for the players? Think of past heroes, the fighting Irish (there are no real leaders on the Irish soccer team to my knowledge but I might be wrong I wouldn't watch more than two or three games a year - and that at a push), Kevin Moran, Paul McGrath, Quinn, Stapleton, Staunton? Think of our own GAA heroes, plenty of leaders in their midst - McGeaney, Tomás Ó Sé, Séamas Moynihan, Alan Brogan, Henry Shefflan, Dooher, Noel O' Leary, Canty, etc. They are heroes and leaders. Is it we just don't have leaders on the soccer team and thats why not as many people are bothered with the borefest in Poland? Culann (Dublin) - Posts: 2306 - 14/06/2012 13:32:05 1194179 Link 0 |
No culann it's because we're the worst team in the tournament and everyone knows we're going home after tonight. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 14/06/2012 13:39:44 1194184 Link 0 |
