1188921 Sorry Hurlingdub, Goldrick is right. The correct name is "Ireland" which our passports say as well. Also our soccer logo (until recently anyways) had "Eire" on it which also means Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland.
I'm not sure where the reference to the Republic of Ireland came from, maybe it was to distinguish the team from Northern Ireland in soccer terms, but in legal terms it doesn't exist.
the refrence came from the brits as they decided they were getting confused with the two teams and as usual like most things here we followed their idea

1188967 Perhaps you have a point Master. Although I think there is more of a connection between a club team and their community. Anyway, as I said I don't resent them or the support although some of the media stuff is painful. Actually that gives me an insight into what non Dubs think of the Dubs :-)
but the differance is when dublin play good and win they get that over the top media reaction like ireland but when we play bad or lose we also get the way over the top criticism unlike the irish soccer team

Hillman, your points about the Leagues & origins are off. The League of Ireland is streets behind the Premiership and other European leagues, good players have to join good teams in order to be exposed and as another poster has demonstrated, plenty of players have started out in the LOI. And you'd swear Ireland is the only soccer nation on earth that has players originally from other countries but qualifies through relatives, that rule is not exclusive to us, do some research on the subject & no doubt, you'll find plenty of that happening on a global scale.
nobody is saying it is as good as the premiership but if thats your opinion then why dont all the leitrim club players go to armagh to play for clubs up there as the armagh club scene is way ahead of leitrim club scene and they would get far more exposure, simple they go over to britain because they get paid more money. if your a good player your a good player it does not matter if you play in ireland england wales or azerbaijan thats my point the IRISH MANAGEMENT TEAM WILL NOT LOOK AT PLAYERS UNLESS THEY PLAY OUTSIDE OF IRELAND.until this changes the irish league will never keep players

Slight problem there, (SJ aside) being that you can't just change clubs willy-nilly in the GAA.

GAA is based upon playing for parish and community whereas soccer is not. Hence the rule differences.

No, it would be more like if your papers were writing about an over-rated opponent, like if the herald wrote solely about england at the euros.

The mind boggles! 'Bernard brogan, perhaps the finest, sorry no perhaps about it, the finest footballer to ever kick a football, rivalled only by alan brogan and mark vaughan.' And that is only the problem pages...

And why the hell shouldn't they? It is a professional sport, they have every right to make a living out of it.

The GAA may be about where you're from but soccer is not.
Get over it.

1188799 i don't know why we are allways referred to as "the republic of Ireland" surely it should be "Ireland"
The FAI split from the IFA just before partition. There followed a period of time during the 20s, 30s and 40s where there were two internationl soccer teams, one representing the IFA in Belfast and one representing the FAI in Dublin both calling themselves 'Ireland'.
There was a lot of negotiations going on all the time between the two associations and the newly formed FIFA about the name 'Ireland', international records and even reunification for a brief time during the 30s.
The name issue was finally ended after the declaration of the Republic of Ireland in 1948, and FIFA decreed that the IFA selection should be known as 'Northern Ireland' whereas the FAI selection should be known as the 'Republic of Ireland'.

clondalkin, the part of dublin i went through anyway i seen more people wearing dub jerseys or tops and not many irish flags at all. there were more irish flags than dub flags but compared to belfast which half the people hate this country there were hardly any flags.
ffgg when you were saying it would be way bigger to win the euros i made the assumption that you meant it would be bigger for longford than if they won leinster or the all ire so i was saying that that is not the case in any of the counties around me. must have mis interpreted you because when meath were big in the late 80's, 90's and early 00's no soccer competition came close to the hype.
hill16no1man well said and i never l thought of that. the media are complete hypocrites. how can they say donegal re ruining the game when the irish soccer team have desroyed the game here. i'll never ever go watch another international after the crap they produced insome of the games i went to. i don't care if they held out for an important 0-0 draw or 1-0 win i'd rather they place nice football which they are capable of doing and never qualify and lets be honest, one major tournament in 1o years doesn't make all the crap football worth while.

Betty I don't know what part of Dublin you where in but in all the working class areas there covered in bunting and irish flags, way more than Dublin had for last years all Ireland. Dublin is buzzing for the euros.

Nooooo comparison between Gaelic football and Soccar, how the hell can you compare a group of Premadonas who get paid MASSIF money for literally using their feet to play to true Sportsmen who do it all for the love of the game, dont get paid a bean and have to be incredible fit and able and athletic, take horrific knocks week after week but still have to face goin into work on a Monday morn, just like the rest of us.....as I say, NO competition, in my opinion.....

Glad to see many of you are free to wave the flag and wear the jersey for the country in the Euros; Catholics in the North are often attacked and murdered for such a simple act of national pride but hey out of sight out of mind.

yeah because the working class areas have been given the buntings and flags to be put up by county councils, there not going out and buying them themselves if your given the stuff free there going to go up,you cannot see town was not covered in blue in the build up to the all ireland final last year and there is certain places as soon as the championship begins houses are covered blue and navy, this only ahppens for ireland when they are in the finals the same equivalent of being in the all ireland final not the begining of the championship
