its amazing how our media works
last year donegal played a very negative gameplan and our media went to town on them slating them
but yet the rep of ireland play the exact sames style of play by hoping to get scoreless draws against better teams and if they do they are classed as heroic performances.

i think the identity of the person nationality is quite clearly up to themselves realy not their parents i dont believe if they are born and rared somewhere they should be brainwashed from birth into being something they are not,if they are born rared and live in soctland they are scottish simple as.
your opinion on moving county is your opinion but i would always be more proud of being from dublin then being irish,i class myself as a dub ahead of irish

bettyroyal..depends what part of dublin you were in i guess....whats that supposed to mean bigger gaa county??...gaa is huge in longford...i am referring to the effect the tournament has on the country as a whole not the individual counties which obviously belongs to the gaa

Ah sure it would have to be the Dubs.

Easy.

Still I'd like to see Ireland do well… always nice to see a bit of positive nationalism... for a change.

I'd get more pleasure from Ireland winning the Euros. Would be great for the country whereas Galway winning Sam/Liam would slightly benefit Galway depending on what part of the county you live in.

Sorry Hurlingdub, Goldrick is right. The correct name is "Ireland" which our passports say as well. Also our soccer logo (until recently anyways) had "Eire" on it which also means Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland.

I'm not sure where the reference to the Republic of Ireland came from, maybe it was to distinguish the team from Northern Ireland in soccer terms, but in legal terms it doesn't exist.

I wish the Irish team all the best but I have to admit I don't intend on sitting down to watch them. Soccer is a painful 'sport' to watch. Its the only 'sport' you can sit down to watch, go to the shop after five minutes, come back home and make lunch, read the sunday papers on the loo and then go back to the same game an hour later and for the score to be still nil all - and all you might have missed was a few corners and three throw ins. I'm afraid I won't be putting myself through that. I'd much rather see Donegal play. That said all the best to them.

Medway I can see your point about the diaspora. However, like hill16man, I just don't have any emotional attachment to them. Nothing against them mind you! But just don't find myself engaged in all of this. Whole flags and bunting thing is a bit false as well. Harmless enough I suppose.

Is it any less false when it is produced for a gaa club in a semi final or final? How about all the spectators that will go to that final who havent watched a game in years? I would pick Mayo to win sam before it but it is a definite second. Ifn fact I would rather win that than the grand slam or even the rugby world cup

Perhaps you have a point Master. Although I think there is more of a connection between a club team and their community. Anyway, as I said I don't resent them or the support although some of the media stuff is painful. Actually that gives me an insight into what non Dubs think of the Dubs :-)

-------------------------

Éire is the name of the country officially, or in English, Ireland. The Republic of Ireland term comes from the act in 1948/9, which was used to describe our country as a republic and remove ourselves from the Commenwealth. It is not, however, official.

The same could definitely be said of Chelsea and to a lesser extent Ulster Rugby. Some of our GAA commentators and analysts are inveterate moaners and whingers, eg Eugene Mc Gee .

Seems to be a battle between, how shall I say, the Patriots & the GAA extremists going on here.

ffgg is correct, there is always enormous interest generated nationally when Ireland are in one of these competitions, you can see so much of it already

Barrowsider im sick of hearing this nonsense that somehow a soccer team doing well lifts the country,

Absolute cobblers. Where were you in Euro 88 beating England 1-0, Italia 90 Romania penalty shoot out, USA 94 beating Italy 1-0 & the Roy Keane incident in Japan 02? (assuming you were born for all that of course) Whole country was gripped by it. And you're a bit of a louser to wish defeat on footballers representing our country just because you don't like how soccer is run. Plastic Paddys me ****, Robbie Keane is as Tallaght as they come, Kevin Doyle is as Wexford as they come, Shay Given is as Donegal as they come and so on. Just because they play in England doesn't alter any of that

Hillman, your points about the Leagues & origins are off. The League of Ireland is streets behind the Premiership and other European leagues, good players have to join good teams in order to be exposed and as another poster has demonstrated, plenty of players have started out in the LOI. And you'd swear Ireland is the only soccer nation on earth that has players originally from other countries but qualifies through relatives, that rule is not exclusive to us, do some research on the subject & no doubt, you'll find plenty of that happening on a global scale.

clondalkindub
Betty that's a complete lie, there's no way there's more Dub flags up than Ireland blunting and flags in Dublin. Everywhere you go there's Ireland bunting and flags outside Dublin houses and everyone is talking about the euros in Dublin.

Spot on. Over the past week, I've been from Dublin to home in Wexford, a day trip to Waterford, had to stop in Naas on the way back up & the Euro 2012 stuff is everywhere. At all the houses, car flags, good luck signs, etc etc etc. Betty must live in a quiet street. Here in work, the place is absolutely covered in tricolours but it would seem these guys want us to view that as a bad thing?

No doubt these boys are passionate followers of the GAA but seemingly dismissive of anything else. Not all sports have to be run like the GAA, different strokes, different folks, they have no interest in Euro 2012, that's fair enough but to suggest that the country doesn't get a kick out of it is deluded. And just because Soccer couldn't be run any more differently than the GAA doesn't make it any less relevant.

Soccer is way down the list of sports for me but sod it, I'm going to shout for the boys in green anyway. Good luck to them.

Going way back to the original question, I can't decide.

Ireland winning the Euros would be totally different to Limerick winning an All-Ireland. They would be different experiences & I've not experienced either before so if I could experience one I'd be bloody well delighted. Bring them on!

a lad from africa playing in europe is not supposed to be representing my country where as a lad who is from england and is not good enough to play for them so we get them as sloppy seconds is representing my country
