i would have to disagree with you in relation to rugby gigoer..soccer has a way bigger feel of importance and magnitude around than any rugby match and we go into the tournament expecting to do terribly..there is nothing quite like a major soccer tournament...even the gaa cannot touch it

you might have picked me up wrong there ffgg,

Obviously Soccer is the most popular sport on earth and personally I believe that to be so in this country too. But to suggest that seems to offend people on this board for some reason.

I would never think that Rugby is more popular than soccer, it isn't, no question about that

I was just describing my own personal experience/opinions in response to mes' post, that's all

i may have posted that the wrong way i just mean i dont think anything could match the effect the soccer team has on this country..nothing compares to it..we are expected to outnumber the brits in the euros in terms of fans like

There's no discussions going on about the euro structure! Though that might change with the expansion to 24, though those of us who remember '90 and '94 won't mind that format.
Regards the question posed, I've no answer. Two different sports. I want Kerry to win, shame about the Christy Ring in hurling. I naturally want Ireland to do well this summer.

I used to go to the odd home game for Ireland over the years, certainly not regularly mind you, but have seen them play in the Old Lansdowne 3/4 times, 2/3 times in Croker and 3/4 times in the Aviva but I've kinda given up on it. Think the last game I was at was Macedonia in 2011, over a year ago now

Nothing that compares to the amount of times I've been to the Wexford hurlers/footballers and Leinster rugby.

But I have to say fair play to you Mes, that's a true supporter talking. Enjoy Sunday.

And like you, I fear our participation will be restricted to 8 days!

Here's hoping we are wrong...

Here's hoping we're wrong indeed!

In saying though I don't think it's impossible that we'll get out of the group. Neither Italy nor Croatia are as good as they once were.

the only reason soccer has that effect on the whole country is because the media gets behind it like there is no other thing on earth
and the other simple fact that the whole country is ireland theres no other team to follow other then ireland so they are all pulling for the one team
theres 32 teams in the gaa so you are hardly going to have the same effect if dublin are playing kerry why would longford put up dublin or kerry flags and get behind them

dublin to win sam and liam anyday over ireland
reop of ireland to me is of no interest i wouldnt support them because of a few facts
1 must be the only country in it with not 1 player playing in their domestic league
2 not 1 player on the irish panel or management possibly live in ireland
3 there is far too many non irish players play for ireland, its more like the british reserves team then rep of ireland, alot of the english born guys are not good enough to play for their own country so ireland gets them, now the management are not even from ireland, just like most of the managers through the years were english and now italian.i dont feel you can associate with guys like this

i don't like soccer and won't be watching the euros, so my answer is my county ofcourse, maybe if ireland had a team at the euros i would watch it but even then it wouldn't overly interest me

your attitude hill is both stupid and ignorant..of course none of them play in ireland or live there because the league is crap and they are obviously going to live in the country their league is in

I hope that Ireland can do well but naturally as a GAA supporter first and foremost I would swap Ireland winning Euro for my Club or county to win a championship. As regards soccer being the most popular sport in Ireland I would disagree.Though I suppose it depends on the criteria used to compare the popularity of the two sports. For instance if the two sports are judged by those who attend each sport then the figures would show that the GAA is by far the more popular sport. If on the other hand taking into account both attending and viewing then Soccer would come out on top as there are large numbers viewing the premiership games ever week over a long period from August to May.

Yet ironically many of those armchair/barstool premiership supporters who watch soccer do not support/attend domestic soccer. A couple of years ago Kildare County, a league of Ireland team based in Newbridge, folded for two main reasons: the strength of the GAA in Newbridge with two big senior clubs and two junior clubs in villages to the East and West of the town and more importantly because the local premiership supporters had no interest in attending and supporting their home team. So in effect what first appears as homogonous support for soccer breaks down into those who attend domestic soccer and support the premiership versus those who support the premiership only with the former suffering as a result.

Guys like what? The diaspora? So how in that case do you feel about second (and third for that matter) generation lads turning out for London in the GAA then? Or are you against London's participation full stop?

I realise there are some who've only signed up because they couldn't get a game for England but there are plenty more for who Ireland would be the first and only choice, myself included if I'd ever had any skill on the field.

I don't think some people realise how insulting all this "plastic" stuff is. Would it be better for the diaspora to merge into English culture, walk around with 3 lions on the shirt singing Ing-gur-lund, paint a george cross on the face and pretend their families roots never existed?

It's an ignorant attitude to have and one that suggests you're clueless about the Irish people's history of forced economic migration. Good for you if you and your family have never had to leave Ireland to earn a crust. Lucky you and lucky them.

Mes, it is absolutely NOT impossible for Ireland to get out of that group. I see it going one of 2 ways:

we beat Croatia something like 1-0 in a boring defensive game, we try to conatin Spain but lose & then try to score early against Italy and play 11-0-0 again & sneak through

Or, we draw against Croatia, lose against Spain and go hell for leather against Italy. Up to other results after that.

My prediction is we end up with 4 points and it not being enough. (We're doing a pool in work & that's how I worked mine out)

Cant see Donegal winning a hurling AI but I would rather see Wexford win an AI in either that Ireland win at the Euro's!

Rep of Ireland winning the Euros would be fantastic for the country, I'll make the patriotic decison and choose that over Dublin winning an All-Ireland
