Jeeesas lads take it easy - it was just a pop at the title of the thread, that's all!!

Wiclowman - love your use of Larry David abuse.

As regard the topic, there are no areas of growth in hurling within my county or armagh (as i know a few lads from there). It's just the same clubs playing.

GAA should be promoted as a whole - all five games.

Croke Park should order all clubs (with enough of a pick) to begin promoting and fielding teams from under 10 upwards in both codes. This should then lead to that club fielding a senior team at some level.
Counties like Kilkenny would work the same only vice-versa with football.

Brolly - to be honest the 1st time I ever heard the use of the word '*****hawk' was in Podge and Rodge a Scare At Bedtime. Funny all the same.

The General Area around Ballymore and Moyvore in Westmeath which caters for the Father Daltons Club seems to be booming last few years in hurling.
They had a hurling club in the 80`s but went out of existance and only reformed in and around 2007 and 2008 where they have gone from Junior B to practically the top team in intermediate in Westmeath.
Also players have have got on Westmeath Panels in the the last few years, John Gilligan is now a member of the Westmeath seniors and Enda Kincaid, Trevor English and Kieran Martin have played underage.

There is a great bit of Hurling growth in North Down. Carryduff, Bredagh and St. Pauls are all doing well at underage level in Down. Bredagh located in the Ballynafeigh area of Belfast are doing great at underage level and are competing with the 3 Ards clubs at underage level. They also have 3/4 lads on the Down senior hurling panel this year. Bredagh also have a team in the 3rd division of the Antrim league. Carryduff also making strides at underage level. St. Pauls are not as far on as the other two clubs but making strides. Long may it continue?

Here in Kilkenny we are telling the young kids it is easier to win a football county final than a Hurling one to keep up the interest, our club played in the intermediate leinster championship last year we played the Dublin champions. We held our own for 40 minutes but let in a soft goal which we never could get back. Saying all that we wouldnt have beaten them if we were still playing now. Most of our players would play hurling and we couldnt match the dublin team for size and power.

Would I be right in saying that almost all teams in KK have a football team? at least some token effort of a team?

A lot of the football brigade slag KK off for their attitude to football. However, one not can compare KK's attitude to football is not the same as, say, Longford's attitude to hurling.

Most clubs field football teams and compete in the leagues and the championship. There are a few football only clubs but it has being a while since one of these has won the county final. Its hard to play good attacking exciting football in january and february thats when the league is played. The championship is put on when it doesnt clash with the hurling and often there is months between the matches. Last year the county final was played on a tuesday night in torrential rain. Hard to get excited about that. The game had to be played as the county champions had to play in the leinster championship that weekend which they won.

Sometimes hurling clubs are started in weaker counties by men from traditional hurling areas such as Cork, Tipp or Kilkenny. These clubs often last and some go extinct. Usually where there is hurling in places like Sligo and Leitrim its a few dedicated men who keep the whole thing ticking over at club scene. I would say that hurling is on the up in Leitrim. We used to have 1 club versus the rest of the county a few years ago, now we have 4 clubs!!!! We even have a county hurler who hails from Iraq playing half foward. http://www.hoganstand.com/Leitrim/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=170339

The lack of coverage of the christy ring, nicky rackard and lory meagher competitions is a real concern of mine. They are set out to 'promote' the game but will only have a combined coverage of 5min on nxt week's sunday game, After a whole day in croke park. Highlights of all games should be shown through out the competitions and not after all 3Finals!
