in my local area there would be 15/20 clubs, attending games on a regular basis you come to know who are GAA people and who are not when you walk down any town..

Ah Booboo..do you not see the difference no-one can object to a blanket no sports jersey's of any kind. This establishment however choose to accept Rugby jersey's by policy and refuse GAA jersey's..thereby discriminating. Furthermore it is known to be welcoming of soccer jersey's on other occasions.

I couldn't either but according to fixer if he doesn't see you regularly attend matches in his area and he spots you wearing a GAA jersey on the street then you are wearing the jersey with hate and bitterness.

What i do get tom is that bars are not publicly owned and if the private owners decide like the scores of oz pubs ,clientele wearing gaa jerseys are rowdy and troublemaking and decide they will not be served on their property iTS THEIR CHOICE END OF STORY

Yes it is indeed their choice, who said it wasn't? It is also discriminatory.

As the bar is my local, and in a mixed area, whilst some posters from outside Belfast, or the North for that matter, may try an find comparisons with instances in the south where they have been refused entry this is not an entirely accurate comparison.
It does make me feel less comfortable going for a drink there knowing such an incident has happened as I have frequently seen people wearing soccer jerseys in this bar. There is an element of snobbery amongst the staff and clientele in that bar, however the implicit undertone that they do not encourage followers of the GAA to go that bar evokes a strong reaction for those who have grown up in the North. As the GAA is inextricably linked to the Catholic/Nationalist community, refusing service on the basis of wearing a GAA top therefore inevitably leads to suggestions that there is a sectarian motive.

PS booboo - lets try and have a civilised debate without raising our voices.

Think that was more to do with WHICH GAA jerseys you were wearing to the fact they were GAA jerseys! In fairness though I'm very surprised, Newry, South Down and South Armagh are very much deep rooted GAA areas and I'm pretty shocked you weren't allowed into the taxi.

No need to be smart Ogra :-) I can assure you we are both respectable gentlemen. Nearly caused us to miss train however, except for the kindness of the bar woman who rang around until she was assured there would be one there straight away.

Still pondering the shock at realising that we Dubs are not universally loved :-(

Ah but it isn't we have legislation to prevent discriminatory practice with Golf clubs banning women being challenged and of course the much cited reason for removing Rule 21 was that the GAA were leaving themselves wide open to litigation.
This bar in question is not in Casement Park which of course would be attracting people there to watch a GAA match for someone to go there with a Rangers jersey that would likely be seen as being deliberately provocative - even then I doubt he'd be asked to leave. This bar is in leafy neutral South Belfast and should represent all the interests of the communities equally. If wearing jersey's becomes an issue then BAN THEM ALL.

True Tom re: Bitterness of jersey's ..well goes to show you we are a broad church in the GAA.
