Yes Floops. It has a dress code - one that discriminates against the wearing of the dress code of the GAA supporter.

Yes this pub is mixed, I've seen ROI tops as well as N.I. ones when games are on. The fact is a lot of people do find GAA tops divisive whether that's right or wrong and they have to do ensure everyone feels welcome there. It's also worth noting that this isn't really a student pub in the way the Bot or the Eg would be, lower Stranmillis is mainly young families and young professionals and Cutter's is stricter about who they admit. Given the business they get, especially in this weather, I doubt they'd really care if a handful of souls boycotted them

"About 15 years ago there was a young lad, irish lad, kicked to death in a now closed night club in balybunion co Kerry.
His "crime" ? Wearing a Rangers jersey in a nightclub. He hadnt a clue what the jersey meant or even that it was a rangers jersey.
Not that the scum who did it knew or cared "

I never remember this incident, can you provide a link for this?

But maybe badmonkey is you! Astuteness and intelligence can be well hidden behind a veil of frequent elipsis to break up points and poor punctuation.

I can't recall either anyone wearing a Rangers top being kicked to death anywhere in the South and I am sure I would remember that. If there is a link I would welcome that and if it did occur it is shameful and scandalous but I don't think that is a factual story.

Tom 1916 - agree totally
For someone obviously not from the 6 counties to make such a value judgement full of arrogance. If you had lived in this part of the world and experienced the ridicule dished out to people from the 26 counties, nationalists from the 6, and immigrant groups you would have some semblance of the level of intolerance that this farce has been built on.
Specific legislation had to brought in here to prevent the institutionalised bigotry in this part of the world.
The lazy ...ah sure your all the same approach is convenient but not bound in any rationality or real world experience.

As for this being sectarian..that can't be correct as the family who control the Bar in question are Catholics. It's not religious but GAA doesn't fit they socio-demographic they are trying to cultivate.
BigTom ..the Four Winds bar is certainly not a bar which GAA people would be welcomed on the contrary...life in your hands.

I would like to see a link to that story too. I doubt very much that somebody wears a jersey without knowing what it represents. It also makes no sense to say that he didn't know that he was wearing a Rangers jersey.

It may not be sectarian Tyronetim but it's still cultural and sporting apartheid; the owners have serious questions to answer and no one within the GAA, media or political circles is doing that and that is quite shameful. It shows that in certain mindsets the GAA is still perceived as the whipping boy, the patsy and Nordie GAA elements are just there ta take a kicking from whoever wants to put the boot in.

most establishments just don't want any trouble - it's bad for business. What's ok in one place may not be acceptable in another. business owners will do what they have to do to protect their business, rightly or wrongly. I doubt very much that this was down to discrimination. The fact that there was and is discrimination around the place doesn't prove anything.

Another point, some people need to wake up about this so called great reputation of GAA fans - Our reputation has been slowly sliding down the toilet over the last number of years. A series of ugly incidents both in and out of the papers and the experiences of occasional match goers (who are ridiculed by GAA people with an attitude of exclusion) has tarnished the whole of the GAA.

1184223 Should have pointed out:
http://www.belfastbar.co.uk/cutters-wharf-review.htm

Have a read of some of the bar "reviews" I think throwing out tourists for offending their "clientele" is the very least of thier worries.

Well spotted rocky!

Myself and friend were once refused by a taxi driver in Newry because we were wearing Dubs jerseys. Evening we beat Derry in the 21s hurling semi final a few years back.

Ulsterman..come on read my posts I don't condone it not for a second it's shameful but I want people to be aware that there is a socio-demographic...."Uppity" you might say among (Middle-class) Catholics who can't wait to "Take the soup"..the "Castle" catholic who want desperately for the kids to go to Methody and to play rugby. It's about social advancement and they despise "Bog ball" and it's connotations with as much fervour as Gregory Campbell/Tom Elliot.

In my opinion it's an poorly run bar anway always has been unfortunately one of the few with a decent beer garden by the river on a sunny day.
